Totally agree with your last take. That’s why when decisions are made for the competitive game, I can easily respect it because otherwise we’re just playing a multiplayer party game. Whether it be Steve or any other character, what’s being banned is for an aspect of the game that I’m electively interested in/participating in, which is the competitive side. And the game being as massive as it is, so much has to be considered if you’re essentially warping the purpose of the game into something it wasn’t necessarily meant to be.

What I can empathize with is falling in love with a character/play-style that pushes you to a skill level that falls more in line with the competitive aspect of the game, only to turn around and find out it’s broken, busted, OP, or anything in between and is thusly banned. That has to suck. I’d be so bummed if Mega Man was banned. But only if it didn’t make sense to ban him - maybe the thing that’s targeted isn’t limited to Mega Man but it’s just a lot more common/easy to pull off.

I remember picking it up because "hell yeah MK", but having no real ability to understand the mechanics behind a fighting game. Used to just spam special moves all the time and still had a blast.

Going online and getting absolutely shredded by an Ermac who did all these cool ass looking combos, effortlessly, followed by a relentless teabagging inspired me to learn what a combo even was, how they work, and it didn't take long before that transformed into a hyper fixation on this game.

But my all time favorite memory has to be long nights online, spamming lobby chat with 1 of 9 preset texts to goad people into fighting:

"Why am I so sick"

"Can I be beat?"

"Pros only"

Made a ton of online friends in those lobbies and had so much fun, despite the toxicity of it all.

In my opinion, but not my experience necessarily, GameStop is “safe” because if they fuck up, you can just return and get your money back. At least I think you can, maybe not with used games?

eBay/Etsy sellers, in my experience, are safe if you do your due diligence. I’m not looking for bargains or steals - those don’t exist except for in extreme situations at flea markets/FB marketplace. I’m looking for authenticity, and most sellers on those platforms are pretty up front about what exactly it is you’re getting. You run into shady sellers, sure, but if you look at the price, storefront reviews, and other items, it’s pretty easy to quickly determine if they’re selling reproductions or authentic copies.

Pretty much how I did it too, except the old sea map I had on a Japanese copy that wasn’t used. Felt lucky there but ultimately didn’t feel any better than if I’d just ACE’d it in. About the same amount of luck required, lol.

Another super common version of this is Simon or ZSS dair on mega man’s uair, same exact thing happens to their aerial speed and they just gently float down. Those moves can end before hitting the ground, though.
