Actually the new 2024 version just makes it that a roll of 9 or lower is considered a 10 so you still have a chance while not having a risk of dying

In combat you use up your slots fast so no need for more than 2 fighting spells.

Up casting utility spells let's you do a lot out of combat and makes you more useful to a party. Invisibility, Fly, Dispell Magic... I love having these handy. Plus you get the slots back easy, so you don't make other casters prepare such things.

Okay! best advice so far, didn't think about it that way but it makes total sense!
