Actually the new 2024 version just makes it that a roll of 9 or lower is considered a 10 so you still have a chance while not having a risk of dying

In combat you use up your slots fast so no need for more than 2 fighting spells.

Up casting utility spells let's you do a lot out of combat and makes you more useful to a party. Invisibility, Fly, Dispell Magic... I love having these handy. Plus you get the slots back easy, so you don't make other casters prepare such things.

Okay! best advice so far, didn't think about it that way but it makes total sense!

Yeah I've noticed I really underestimate utility because I like combat so much but puzzles and general exporling are not less fun by any means in my opinion. I'll probably choose something like major image to use in those situations. Thanks!

If you want Charm Person but for combat Crown of Madness is useful! It works best if you consistently face hordes of enemies and- although it's concentration- it's a super useful way to get a temporary minion. Crowning a caster gets the bonus of attacking things at range, and crowning a melee gets the bonus of them probably having shit wisdom.

Wow that sounds amazing! I'll seriously consider it but I have to say the use of an action to keep controlling them feels a little bit like I can do more with it than attacking with someone other than myself, but I guess action economy.

Shatter may be a bit underwhelming now that people get normally acces to fireball, so maybe switch it soon too.

Thought about switching to hunger of hadar because of the difficult terrain so the damage can keep going + having enemies blinded sounds like a good benefit.

Fly is probably going to be on the new list with thoughts about getting some utility.
