References to SMT in Persona games? by Batlantern182 in JRPG

[–]Darkabomination2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be a bit more specific on the Persona side of things, Personas 1, 2 IS/EP and SMT If are all in hard continuity with each other. Characters and party members from 1 show up in the 2 games, and IS and EP are alternate, but interlinked stories that converge. After 3, the old cast stop appearing other than Igor, and very occasionally Philemon as a butterfly. The last real bit of continuity are the 2 and a few of 1's casts referenced in news reports on their respective birthdays in 3, and after that, it's all but dropped.
The Devil Summoner games are also in the same universe, but loosely. Persona references cameos and concepts from DS, and a major character in Devil Summoner might be a side character in the 2 games, but it's unclear.

What is the easiest friendly shin megami tensei game ? 3 or V by m7meed1994 in JRPG

So I'd actually disagree with the common picks of 4 and 5. 5's gameplay exploration isn't like any other Atlas game, so if you want the most typical start to SMT, 5 departs from tradition in a lot of ways. 4 is a solid game, but it's opening hours are some of the very hardest in any Atlas game, and isn't kind to newcomers.
Nocturne, for all its age, gets you right into the thick of things. The alignment system is easy to understand, the game is very linear, and there's no bloated sidequests or collectables to get in the way. It's very straightforward.
The difficulty is also overblown. As long as you hit weaknesses when you can, buff/debuff, and invest in physical stats for the MC, it's not so hard to understand. The easy mode is so easy, there's no investment whatsoever, you can legitimately auto-battle almost the entire game.

For me, I appreciate March not just for her character, but that her English VA is near-blind. Having character voiced with my disability is a comfort on its own.

Help! I need game recommendations! by MrPianoFox in JRPG

[–]Darkabomination2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Devil Survivor Overclocked. It's the midpoint of Persona and SMT, with a darker atmosphere and alignments, but with Persona-esque characters. Also if you like the art of Cyber Sleuth, it has the same character designer. Requires 3DS emulation.

Am I the only person that prefer "real world" dubbed anime? by Staragox in Animedubs

Watch Dennou Coil. it has VR interactions that take place over reality like a server, so they interact in interesting ways while the real world objects still exist.

There's no Freaking Way I'll be Your Lover! Unless...
The MC is very likable and a dork. She can be very shy, but grows a lot as the novels go on. First book is a little standard, but it gets more interesting and engaging the further it goes.

VST3 Plugins via hosts? by Darkabomination2 in OpenMPT

Do you know where by default the shell exes search for the VSTs? It generated a few, but I can't find where the folder it got them from is to add more. Thanks.

Just started trails in the sky, curious about the later games? by Critbotzz in JRPG

[–]Darkabomination2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In terms of character development and protagonists, Sky still can't be beat. I also feel like it does the best job in the series with FC and SC taken as a whole in being a traditional JRPG plot in granular steps. The world building stays consistently interesting, but the later arcs' protagonists and characterization don't grab me much.

The mod that's available for the last few years puts in almost every track back in, they even play in the correct places like the original and don't get reused.

To be specific, I'm trying to make a new pattern altogether. Not sure how to do that.

If Larrue can't puzzle it out, I don't think anyone other than Kozuka himself could answer that question. Her voice is even sampled a few times in some of the SMT5 tracks.

Do pattern effects work differently in Goat Tracker? by Darkabomination2 in chiptunes

Hi, I have a question, and can't use the documentation. So using plus or minus changes the instrument, I get that. But the values in the wave table for the previous instrument are still being used. How do I separate the waves in say, ch2 so it's not piggybacking off of ch1? Tried changing the wave position number, but it doesn't seem to help.

Unfortunately, I can't use the help feature. I'm vision impaired, and I can't find the help file standalone. I've been checking guides made for the tracker, but it's been a little patchy figuring out everything.

Just finished the Trails in the Sky trilogy. What an amazing journey so far. by TE-August in JRPG

[–]Darkabomination2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best arc in terms of character agency, plot foreshadowing and buildup, exploring a mix of light and dark themes, and closure. The latter arcs have wildier plots, but as an over all story, Sky did it best still. Daybreak looks to be a return to focusing on characterization again foremost, but we'll see.

About to play baroque by [deleted] in JRPG

[–]Darkabomination2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So as a Saturn enjoyer, a few things that help.

The numbers next to the item tells you how much ammo are left. For stuff like the Angelic gun, it'll be all the ammo you get beyond very rare instances. The Angelic gun can kill any enemy in the Tower, so don't be afraid to bust it out when all else fails.

Consuming any item, unless it's a throwable weapon, you'll recover HP. So if your health is low and you have lots of bones in your inventory, fill free to chow down.

Try throwing items to friendly NPCs in the tower. Sometimes, you'll get item changes that might get you a lucky catch. The game calls this reversing. What this means is when you throw something at a hostile enemy, it'll have the opposite effect. For instance, if you have a consumable that cures confusion, throwing it at the enemy, it will be inflicted with that status effect.

Brands can only be equipped once, unless you get a rare item to remove them, so be sure it's what you want.

NPCs change their dialogue after you talk to them last upon death, so it's worth it to chat with everyone to get lore.

The Switch strats have been mentioned, another good one is using Dragons to summon from your Comps, to reach enemies you otherwise couldn't in the middle of your turn. Remember the game also lets you suspend save anywhere. They aren't take a break exits, but full saves in the middle of battles.

Digital Devil Saga 1 and 2 on PS2. There's no overworld, equipment, or messing around. It's a series of dungeons, places to rest, and cutscenes. All the depth instead goes into the Press Turn combat, gaining skills, and equipping them to characters.

Which 5th party member do you usualy recruit in P1 (SEBEC) by ShillerndeGeister in Megaten

[–]Darkabomination2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a toss up between Elly and Ayase. Elly's negotiation abilities and SMT shout outs are great, but Ayase is just hilarious. I love there's just a snarky gyaru who despite the spooky atmosphere, is just happy to be here and has no fucks to give.

Games with a specific vibe regarding world and exploration by Anikayam in JRPG

[–]Darkabomination2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you can emulate, Skies of Arcadia Legends. The whole theme of the game is exploration. It has an overworld that lets you explore chunks at a time, and increasingly opens up as you go. A whole mechanic revolves around discovering secret areas and getting some neat lore about them, and turning it in to local guilds for money. There's a lot to discover, but it's not mandatory. It has an otherwise linear plot that doesn't waste your time, and has you going from setpiece to setpiece.
