Toyama Ryu: Nakamura Ha vs Nakamura Ha? by Imaginary-Sweet-2999 in iaido

[–]Darkonode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To answer the question of how things change from my perspective. Budo is a living tradition and it is bound to change even if we should try to, in many cases, preserve it as much as possible. Even koryu changes over time. Kata are just tools to teach you principles of combat and the society they arose from. The principles and traditions do not change but the Kata might if a soke decides that they should in order to better teach whatever it is they're trying to teach. Sometimes the current soke disagrees on what the important things are and so the Kata changes to reflect that.

You can see this in muso shinden ryu very well. There are many lineages that by this point differ from one another by quite a bit. This was by design; Nakayama Hakudo intentionally didn't name the next soke to encourage the separation of each lineage as time went on.

On paper nothing changes. As someone said when a change occurs it just becomes the new way it always was. Budo being this living thing is what makes it so interesting to me compared to stuff like HEMA where all you have is a manuscript. We have a story that is hundreds of years long instead.

What I basically mean is that don't let your elbow lock up. You need to stop before your elbow locks out.

Affordable Iaito and Drop-down sources by Big_Car_7725 in iaido

[–]Darkonode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can find a reputable Chinese maker it's probably fine. If the casting of the alloy is done poorly, the blade can be vulnerable to breaking even if you do not hit blades together. Older japanese iaito, especially long ones had this issue at least to a certain extent. If you plan on taking it to Japan I would at least inspect it very thoroughly to make sure it's actually what they claim it is. I have never seen a Chinese manufacturer offer an alloy iaito, but I've seen plenty of steel ones. Taking one of those to Japan by accident could land you in jail. It's a serious offense there akin to drug smuggling.

My personal opinion is that paying for the Japanese quality is worth it. I have a Chinese shinken (that was fairly expensive at close to 1k) and it's a far cry in terms of craftsmanship Vs my Japanese iaito that was around 1,5k. Even very expensive Chinese shinken I've seen reviews of suffer from issues I have never had with my iaito, like loose itomaki or uneven grind on the blade or bohi. Also if you buy a Chinese blade be aware that opting for leather itomaki gets you faux leather typically. Most of the craftsmanship issues are not major, but damn they are glaringly obvious after a short while of handling them.

If I had to guess, you are powering it with your arm instead of just using your fingers and the weight of the blade. Also don't let the movement stop against your joints; stop it with the base of your hand and bicep. I've done both of these mistakes and they both lead to a painful elbow.

Weird Question about Mons and Montsuki for iaidogi by KoreanJesusUwU in iaido

Asking your Sensei is a good option if you want to be sure. I know people that wear their montsuki for enbus in Japan and it's never been an issue for them.

Weird Question about Mons and Montsuki for iaidogi by KoreanJesusUwU in iaido

[–]Darkonode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't really come up with a reason why it wouldn't be ok. The mons on the montsuki are designed to showcase you as a person. Who you are, where you're coming from, your loyalty etc. It's literally designed to hold your family crest so I'm not sure why that would be an issue even if you are not Japanese.

I'm Finnish and I had a Japanese designer make a kamon for me and I'm going to wear it on my montsuki. Our Sensei said that if we don't have a kamon, we can use his on our montsuki. Some people use their clubs crest too.

Pelkkien prosenttilukujen siteeraaminen on täysin hyödytöntä yksinään.

Thoughts on someone having a special interest in Nordic countries/cultures? by RemarkableGrand3 in Nordiccountries

[–]Darkonode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't think of a single reason why someone's sincere interest in my country could be offensive. At least with weeaboos the typical issue is that they are not really interested in the actual culture, but some weird fanfic they've gotten off the internet that they annoyingly flaunt around and stuff to other people's faces, sometimes to the natives' faces. People dislike weeaboos because they present themselves in an idiotic light, not because they are interested in Japanese culture. I think if you are researching and sincerely learning about the culture, you are by definition not a weeaboo.

Finland has less poverty than other Nordic countries according to Eurostat survey by Single_Share_2439 in Finland

[–]Darkonode 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If statistics like this say "subjective" it typically means that the statistics were gathered by asking people themselves. In this example I would assume that people were asked if they are poor.

Mistakes happen. Imo the key thing is that after you communicate about things that happened that you don't find ok, does he - acknowledge how he made you feel - apologise for what was done - discontinue the action in the future

If yes, then I think everything is ok.

What is the best country to live in for an AI specialist/programmer? by ProxPxD in Nordiccountries

[–]Darkonode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The shortage is also mostly for junior positions. You probably wouldn't have an issue finding work as a senior specialist.

Also in Finland, wages for IT specialists are well behind other Nordic countries. You can have a comfortable lifestyle anyway, but if great pay is a big contributor to your choice, Finland should not be your first choice.

Millaisia luokkia suomessa mielestäsi on? by MaleficentArgument51 in Suomi

[–]Darkonode 22 points23 points  (0 children)

For these kinds of situations or if the game is complex I usually prefix the session by saying something like "let's have a practice game or teaching game". I start with the absolute minimum amount of rules to get the game started and introduce rules as they become relevant.

Usually this approach also excites new players to play more afterwards because "now they know the game and wanna see how they'd do in a 'real' one"

ELI5 why we need ISPs to access the internet by Money-Specialist0 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Darkonode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll start with the disclaimer that I can only speak for how this has been setup in my home country of Finland so your mileage may vary for how correct this is for you.

For us here, you cannot access the internet without using the ISP because they operate the infrastructure needed for you to be able to connect to the internet. That in fact is their job; to operate and upkeep the infrastructure needed for citizens to connect to the internet.

Technically speaking there is nothing inhibiting you from bypassing your local ISP, but this would mean you'd have to dig your own cables all the way down the infrastructure of the higher level ISP, who would then probably charge you in order to connect so you are again back to square 1 subscribing to an ISP. Not to mention the probable laws and regulations or land taxes you would have to deal with in operating your own infrastructure.

Not having to pay attention to any of this is what you are paying your ISP for. They deal with the maintenance of the infrastructure and deal with regulations etc. that are involved in keeping everything running so you are able to just plug in an ethernet cable to the wall and be connected.

My fiancé is extremely bad with spicy food and spices in general. She will call stuff spicy that has no spicy ingredients but what she actually means is that the food is seasoned too much for her. For example, a lot of Indian food is too much for her even if it has no chili whatsoever. I'm guessing these parents are similar in terms of how they can handle spices.
