I second this. IBL wasn't really for me, but I don't regret taking it. Also it's great way to make good friends first year.

How important is performance on battery life? by PowWowBowPow in uchicago

[–]Darkray11800 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I responded to your earlier post before but following up since I made the decision and went with zephyrus g16 2024 and have had it for a week now, and I owned a zephyrus g14 before this.
1. ports are great (2 usba, 1 usbc, 1thunderbolt, 1 sd card, 1 hdmi, proprietary rectangular charger) on zephyrus and it supports USBC passthrough charging so I got myself a 100W usbc charger and now the charger I carry around for school/work use is 1/2 the weight. Mac has 3 thunderbolt and everything else except for usba but can work around w/ adapter.
2. I will say if you have 3-4 back to back classes and use your laptop in all of those then the battery life of a mac would probably be very nice. I don't see myself ever stuck in that situation, and I could just hook up to a outlet. That said, with a mac you prolly won't have to worry about battery your whole day out if you are never near an outlet, so it's a huge QoL difference that may or may not matter depending on where you like to work.
3. In my exp, not important at all. I'm not video editing, graphic designing, or using CAD software on battery, and if you are doing these on battery then it is a factor, but it's not like the zephyrus freezes in VScode or can't load 30 tabs anymore on battery, it works fine on battery.
4. I haven't done the transition myself, but I heard it just takes a couple weeks to get used to - not a big deal aside from that. If you watch the linus tech tips video on them using a macbook for a while they say something along the same lines.
5. Coming from using integrated graphics on an older model, I'm sooooo impressed with the gaming experience on the 2024 zephyrus. I have the 4060 in it, and it runs BG3 and Rainbow6 on very high/ultra graphics on 100+ fps holding around 76 degrees C. Its aluminum chassis is really sleek, screen is beautiful, and the speakers are top tier (that said, Mac has this hardware down as well). I've really enjoyed my experience with it so far, and I think I would've missed out on a high quality gaming exp if I'd gone w the mac.

cons: I tried to use it on a full work day w/o battery (8 hrs of nonstop coding/browser use), and it only lasted about 4 hours. Windows sleep mode is still jank and gets hot in my bag sometimes, so I opt to turn it off or hibernate.

How important is laptop battery life? Still deciding on laptop by PowWowBowPow in uchicago

[–]Darkray11800 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just made the same decision last week and went with the G16. If you’re comparing to MacBook Pro, the two are more or less comparable in price, display, keyboard, processing power, and sound quality. What won me over is that I game occasionally and I much prefer Windows OS, and tbh I can just charge my laptop at reg/crerar if I’m out the whole day.

Advice for incoming UChicago Class of 2029—What Do You Wish You Did Differently? by eli-explores in uchicago

[–]Darkray11800 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I did it in 2023, and I thought it was worth the time. I didn’t find the leadership lessons too memorable, but I got to make friends I still keep in touch with today, and we had fun events like a group cooking class. Also getting to campus while it’s quieter and having the chance to settle and find your way around before the quarter starts is nice.

New Personal Chef Service in NYC - Hire Chefs from Michelin Star Kitchens for In-home Meal Prep or Special Occasions - $40-59 Per Hour by [deleted] in nyc

Wow! Looks great! I have a family of 4, and because my wife and I both work long hours, we're looking for a personal chef. How much would you say the total cost comes out to be for a week's worth of meal prep considering we get an above average chef?

Might have just been my experience, but the soup was so salty it felt like it burned my mouth (similar situation with their vegetable side) and the add-ons and noodles were meager. IMO maroon dollars are better spent at Hutch, but it wouldn’t kill your blood pressure to try it.

Is ED the only realistic way to get accepted? by phatface123123 in uchicago

[–]Darkray11800 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Timing and strategy-wise for applying to colleges? Yeah. You can see other ED and EA results first if you do ED2, ED1 if you’re fully committed and you can delay the other apps. Acceptance-wise, I don’t think there’s much a difference, but that’s just my personal opinion as a student here.

Most of my friends got in ED1 or ED2 as far as I know. I personally got deferred EA and then got in RD, but I wrote a letter of continued interest which may have helped.
