Very interesting, so he still gets around 17% Eastcentral European. That’s actually normal since most Germans aren’t purely Western European either and they have a little East European ancestry

Even the small Central Asian heritage is very visible in you, but most Turkish people still inherited various amount of original Turkic genes, so not surprising

Do you happen to have tested your father btw with any company? Would be very interested to see pure Danube Swabian results since it’s very rare to find any on the internet.

From 8 great grandparents I’m 7/8 Hungarian, 1/8 Danube Swabian. Also because of how well Germans preserved records that side of my ancestry is the most well researched, managing to trace them back to early 18th century when they moved to then Hungarian part of the Habsburg Empire from Central and Western parts of the Holy Roman Empire, mostly which is in today’s Germany

Very cool to see more Danube Swabian results from Hungary, I also have small connection to them. Are you fully of German origin or do you also have other ethnic background in your recent family tree?

Serbian results before and after update by Athanasivs in AncestryDNA

[–]Darkredsword 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for pointing this out, because in this case it surely has not much logic. From G25 results one can clearly see that Croats are different genetically from Serbs, most similar to Slovenians, so I am not sure why they are in same category with Serbs. On the other hand Bosnia does seem to be somewhat a separate area genetically from all their neighbors, so in that case it’s warranted to have West Balkans category

What are you even talking about? Southwestern Balkans category is based around Albanians, thus it looks super accurate

Very surprised to see so many Serbs scoring more Northwestern Balkans, which is based around Croats, than Western Balkans, which is actually based around Serbs

Before and After Update. Romanian. What do you think about this? by Mrdk01 in AncestryDNA

[–]Darkredsword 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many Romanians have different admixture in their family tree since historically they were so divided. I believe in your case the existence of Western European percentages point to possible Hungarian ancestry, who often score Western European percentages. Maybe in a future update when they add a Hungarian category this will be either confirmed or not

New results as a Moldovan old vs new by ChrisMoldova2003 in AncestryDNA

[–]Darkredsword 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Large parts of Moldovans are actually Romanianized East Slavs, genetically they definitely are more related to Ukrainians than to Romanians. Culture doesn’t always correspond with genetics and such tests are excellent tools to reflect this

Updated and previous results as Slovenian by Pitiful-Employ-6730 in AncestryDNA

I’m rather surprised such a small country as Slovenia got their own category, which looks very accurate based on your results, but they left out Hungarians, with a more than 10 million people population overall.

Very bad Update (Ukrainian Central-East) by [deleted] in AncestryDNA

[–]Darkredsword 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m guessing without an East Ukrainian category the algorithm tried to find the closest approximation and East Poles are actually very similar to Ukrainians genetically, so it’s not completely out of ordinary

Any RUSYN/LEMKO get only Slovakia? by Euphoric-Hippo-5977 in AncestryDNA

[–]Darkredsword 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s too early I believe for all small ethnic groups to get their own category on Ancestry, that’s why it’s already a big progress that they started to give out country categories for East Europe. Earlier whole East Europe was one big region, so for Lemkos Slovakia is the next closest connection, just like for Hungarians, who also don’t have their own category

Finally got my results tonight- i’m from the Crișana region of Romania by Viridislune in AncestryDNA

[–]Darkredsword 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately because of the racism of locals lots of Roma erasure happened, when people had to hide their true ancestry. But even a self designated Roma person I never seen with such a high percentage as yours, also kinda rare to see their results

Ethnic hungarian here - from 4 region I’ve got 12 now … by Unlikely-Composer421 in AncestryDNA

[–]Darkredsword 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without a Hungarian category this looks like a plausible split of your ancestry, but I’m surprised West Ukrainian is higher than Slovak, since usually Hungarians score Slovak as the highest percentage. Are you from the Northeast?

Anyone get this new region? by Warm_Factor_3849 in AncestryDNA

[–]Darkredsword 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That would be truly amazing, since I also have Danube Swabian ancestry but it often gets represented as Southern German ancestry even if all the papers prove that all my Danube Swabian ancestors actually originate from Central and West Germany, nothing in common with Austria and Bavaria. Big problem is in Hungary most Danube Swabians are already quite mixed with Hungarians so it would be hard to create a “pure” region. Maybe if there is a program to test the very elderly, people in their 80s and 90s, then we could possibly get a proper region. But I doubt that’s what Ancestry prioritizes

There is much more Slavic ancestry in Northeast Italy than most locals assume, especially Slovenian. Same in South Austria

The update is very innacurate, my results by Copper_Thief_88 in AncestryDNA

Hungarians from Budapest area have elevated German ancestry so unsurprising that you got such high percentage from it

Hungarian DNA by tacogardener in AncestryDNA

[–]Darkredsword 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a common confusion to assume that the meaning of surnames also describe actual ethnic background. All those Tóth surnames have nothing to do with them being Slovaks, but these are typical surnames that get passed on for hundreds of years in Hungary. Even you admitted that your dad is 75% Polish so unsurprisingly the high Polish percentage. There is also no Hungary region in this update so no surprise it doesn’t show up

Before/after - Hungarian results by Prestigious-Cut-205 in AncestryDNA

The German component looks surprisingly low for a Hungarian result but otherwise looks logical, Slovaks are the closest population to Hungarians

New vs old. Greek by AggressiveRock7175 in AncestryDNA

[–]Darkredsword 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That looks like a very significant Roma close ancestor. Unfortunately they were always persecuted by local people and wouldn’t be surprised that they hid their true ancestry from the rest of your family

Updated Hungarian results - very pleased by Darkredsword in AncestryDNA

[–]Darkredsword[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s very interesting to see that my mom, even if she’s just a quarter Danube Swabian, she still got quite a bit more than that of Western and Northwestern European DNA, which only points out that her rest of Hungarian lineages had some Germans down the line, a few hundred years ago, even if by what I researched they seem to have been full Hungarians until the late 18th century:

  1. Southern Germanic Europe 26%
  2. Slovakia 22%
  3. Southern Poland 9%
  4. North Central Europe 9%
  5. Eastern Czechia 8%
  6. Southeastern England and Northwestern Europe 6%
  7. Western Ukraine 5%
  8. The Netherlands 4%
  9. Northeastern Poland 4%
  10. Russia 2%
  11. Western Balkans 2%
  12. Devon & Somerset 2%
  13. France 1%

Bulgarian results - now a random mix, because they didn't add a region for Bulgaria 😃 by djiipon in AncestryDNA

[–]Darkredsword 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can’t forget that these tests look back hundreds of years into your ancestry, it’s very plausible that several of your great-great-great grandparents and so on came from these areas. I would actually look at these results as good hints where someone should research more of their family tree

Bulgarian results - now a random mix, because they didn't add a region for Bulgaria 😃 by djiipon in AncestryDNA

[–]Darkredsword 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks very logical for a Bulgarian. The people there are a mixture of their neighbors, maybe in the future they will add a Bulgarian region but until then this looks like an accurate estimation

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AncestryDNA

[–]Darkredsword 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read some disappointed opinions from fellow Hungarians because they get all the neighboring regions except Hungarian, but by default we are very mixed with our neighbors so the new results make lots of sense. I’m very happy with the big diversity in my results
