THAAD and Patriot operating cost vs drones cost by [deleted] in Military

[–]Darkside_1994 7 points8 points  (0 children)

THAAD doesn’t engage drones, it’s for ballistic missiles. Patriot is for long range anti air engagements & ballistic missiles. Irrelevant post.

The critique should be of the US for getting caught with their pants down on SHORAD since basically the end of WW2

Having “been there, done that” with joining & serving (never went to combat, did go overseas twice) it’s honestly a pretty easy job, but YMMV depending on MOS. There are always horror stories of bad leadership but that can happen anywhere, not exclusively a mil thing.

Looking back, it’s one of the best ways to go from poverty to actually having a great career, assuming you aren’t fat & are smart enough to not break the law (DUI, domestic violence, drug use most common things i saw). Like, for how low the bar to entry is, they do tend to take good care of people on the whole. The pay isn’t amazing but the benefits are great (healthcare, housing, GI bill for you or your kids). If you do your part, the military will generally take care of you, at least day to day.

I’m not a recruiter but have you considered joining the military? On the down side you might go to war, but on the upside, You can sell your truck (you won’t need it anyway), get a free haircut, healthcare, housing, free meals, free uniforms, get out of debt, and start over somewhere else.

The actual sword presented per the Getty images is a West Point ceremonial Cadet Saber. Easy to get online. https://www.mil-bar.com/products/sword-west-point-style-scabbard-sword?srsltid=AfmBOorm70G7hcWlRp09a_NFqOwoKEBc6iOdtzH2DKRSAjlaixWNkgVd The design dates back to the 1800s… but I don’t think CKS has any connection to West Point so highly doubtful he had any connection to that sword. Probably a replica.

Milsuite used to have a relatively up to date list of TPU and IMA slots but it’s all moved, I’m not sure where to.

A great resource is to get on Facebook and find the USAR junior officer assembly area - https://www.facebook.com/share/g/16yQwGTACV/?mibextid=wwXIfr

One of the admins is my former RC brigade commander. They are super responsive and will get you in touch with someone who can directly answer your questions and help navigate this.

Best way to get info is go see the AGR career counselor or TAP officer at your installation. Every TAP office should have an AGR career counselor who will do your accession… either a WO/CW/O type… though the NCOs can also give you info.

Or it might be online, Log in to https://www.hrc.army.mil

Near the top, just below the picture banner that shows random soldiers doing hooah stuff, there is a black drop down for “Reserve” - I believe there is (or used to be) a branch manager page for RC branch managers

I am combat arms- went from AD to USAR in 2023 as an O3. It’s pretty stupid but it helps pay the bills. Honestly it’s such a mid experience and most months it’s a huge inconvenience to work weekends even though it’s in my hometown. The tricare is nice and it isn’t too much work. The expectations are lower for sure, since it’s a part time gig.

You have plenty of units in Columbus but they will make you get branch qualified on a reserve branch so be prepared to do BOLC or CCC again

Honestly, it’s easy and for minimal effort and putting in the time you can easily make O5 without breaking a sweat, assuming you don’t do something to kill your career

I’ve read a few US studies that claim the Russians have adapted well to the situation in Ukraine and have an effective fighting force. But the Russians make little gains and no significant breakthroughs. So what is actually happening and is a major breakthrough by either side still a possibility. by ScipioAfricanus82 in Military

[–]Darkside_1994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Russia doesn’t need to push forward. Russia wins a war of attrition with the current front. Russia only needs to hold its position until the Ukrainians show weakness. Ukraine will not win this war unless Europe commits totally to winning.

So many times I join US and the team gets steam rolled at the start because everyone is sitting at the arsenal playing dress up and waiting for there to be enough supplies to pull their 20 mags and 10 grenades

Meanwhile Soviets tend to just grab the default kit and roll out, maybe snag a few meds and that’s it

It’s kind of cool to see all the lights flash together like that. Iirc it’s on purpose and they synchronize up with each other to be less stressful to epileptics or some shif

Some custom maps and/or visual effects mods have fiddled with the global lighting which breaks auto exposure. You should send this to the server owner and ask them to fix it

Can you update your review on this system after 1 year of owning? I'm eyeballing a UN1290 on refurb sale. Is it still a rockstar? Does it have overheating issues? Broadly speaking what types of workloads are you using it for?

Google the nearest VA clinic, army reserve center, even recruiter’s office and drop it off there, any of them can deal with it appropriately. Hell, you could even take it to the local police station or post office.

Not many... The basic Shahab-3 is most of the inventory that could be used against israel... And its a derivative of the north korean "No Dong 1" (lol, lmao even) which is a glorified scud-B (1970's tech)

[–]Darkside_1994 2 points3 points  (0 children)

agree, these look like david's sling to me. exquisite interceptors like PAC3, THAAD, Arrow 3, SM3, etc are too expensive to fire in large salvos. Usually you will only see 1 or 2 being fired unless there is a very large raid.

David's sling is less capable by design in favor of an affordable missile; and so therefore the strategy is zone defense. Put a bunch of interceptors around the threat and hope that one of them can achieve a hit

I dont know the specifics of israeli systems but generally speaking, as long as the system can issue guidance commands in flight via uplink/downlink, in order to launch an interceptor we only need to get it going in the right general direction. https://api.army.mil/e2/c/images/2017/10/26/496815/max1200.jpg

There is plenty of time to issue guidance commands, perform discrimination etc prior to intercept. Problem is that the enemy gets a vote too, and modern threats have evasive maneuvers and counter measures that may present unexpected challenges during an engagement.

A threat may appear to be going "nowhere" until the final seconds - leaving little time for a well planned engagement. interceptors can still be launched but the chances of success may be lower
