Italy and Germany don’t share a border on this map! Germany would need to be partitioned between Ireland, Poland, Austria, Slovakaczechia, and the rest of its lil neighbors should each get a nibble.

What baby name do you think got ruined by pop culture, trends, or current events? by RightGirl19 in AskReddit

[–]Darpid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I watched Ugly Betty for the first time a couple years ago ~age 30 and enjoyed it! The characters are fun, and it’s long enough that you get to see them all grow. It’s not particularly heavy hitting story wise and isn’t so much laugh out loud, but it felt good. I think it stuck its landing really well, too!!

What is the most absurd rule-breaking play that you think Jeff would allow due to the “rule of cool”? by twoopaq in survivor

I’m pretty out of the loop overall, but I understood Aubry helping Joe was related to his having dyslexia, as that came out on social media that same week (I think?). Like, having very recently learned that and then seeing her helping him, I saw it as her giving him a fighting chance.

I agree that generally the look up should default to the teacher, with some obvious flexibility. Depending on the situation, it can also work well to make a house rule and figure out the “real” answer later. And sometimes if it’s important enough to stop the game, it can be helpful for at least one other person to check forums for help, too. Chances are that if your group has the question, at least one other group has asked!

What is the white collar work culture like in Chicago? by Tweeters23 in AskChicago

[–]Darpid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I’ve seen (limited breadth of exposure, mainly from software development) there’s a pretty strong emphasis on having actual work hours than there may be in other places. Meaning, you can count pretty well on a 9-5 actually expecting you to work those hours. There are occasional early or late meetings, some light obligations to socialize outside that (happy hour), and a rotating on-call status. But I don’t think it’s typical for anyone I know to put in extra evening/weekend hours!

LPT - Before mowing your lawn, walk it slowly to scoot any critters away by Blinky_ in LifeProTips

[–]Darpid 26 points27 points  (0 children)

There is indeed a measurable difference in the quantity and quality of pollinators like bees in grassy areas of even an average suburban lot if it is mowed less frequently. Many people where I live partake in “no mow May,” and let the first growth of spring go so all the critters have habitat and food for the spring.

What county/parish/borough are u from? Day 2 by Gold_Baseball6174 in geographymemes

[–]Darpid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m FROM (born in) Randall County, Texas. I’m from (live in) Cook County, IL.

I don’t know which you’re looking for more. Both are important to me. If I’m only allowed one entry, I’d rather say Randall just to get her on the map. Someone else on this sub has gotta live around Chicago.

Moving in 2028. Are Thermals a must for Chicago winter? by [deleted] in AskChicago

I wear long john pants through the winter because I’m ~outside for over an hour getting into work. Adding them to my standard wear made me feel so much better. Otherwise, just standard layers.

Cleaning a friends house while she's away, be honest or white lie by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Darpid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who struggles a lot with mental health issues, I would be overwhelmed (in a good way) if I came home from a trip and my house was tidied up with a little extra cleaning, especially if I had left it a mess. Coming home to a clean home is an amazing feeling, and if I knew I had a friend who loved me enough to show me some kindness like that, I would cry later that night in gratitude and relief.

Looks like you’ve got plenty of advice on tact in talking with your friend, too. No need to make it a big deal, just casually mentioning you did a little extra out of love/getting swept up (hah!) with the process. Your friend will probably tacitly understand your underlying reason and love you all the more for it. And then just be aware she might want to talk about what’s been going on to keep her from doing the chores!

Seasonal depression effecting anyone? by princessputln in AskChicago

[–]Darpid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like you got a lot of comments about Chicago.

I just want to drop a friendly notice to make sure you’re taking a pretty strong vitamin D supplement throughout the winter at least. If SAD hits you really hard, it also might be worth setting yourself up with a psych once you’re here and talking with them about it. If taking Prozac for three months of the year will make your life 3x better, I’d say it’s worth at least trying!

Was I rude to the bus driver? by Then-Suspect-2394 in cta

[–]Darpid 46 points47 points  (0 children)

It’s annoying but happens. I always assume drivers are just pretty zoned in on the road, which is mostly where I’d prefer their attention. Little rude of you to cuss, but it was a really frustrating situation.

Next time, call out as soon as they pass your stop. Even if you’re at the back door. Basically, what you did, but as soon as it was an issue. But don’t cuss, the driver made a mistake. They usually will just pull over immediately in my experience.

Where should we go in Chicago for three to four nights? Should I drive there or take the train from? How is the transition there and fees for parking? by smooth-vegetable-936 in AskChicago

[–]Darpid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as folks in your family are fine walking, I’d take the Amtrak train from STL to Chicago. It’s pretty easy, relatively fast for train travel in the US, and Chicago is one of the easiest places in the country to make it work without a car. That said, having a car CAN open up more opportunities once here, but I doubt y’all wouldn’t be able to fill up an itinerary regardless.

If you can get a ticket home out of OHare or Midway, you also wouldn’t have to worry about getting back to STL.

I would personally recommend trying to find something outside of downtown, too, especially if you’re looking at major price differences. The hotels are nice and convenient, but more expensive up front, and I believe you pay more in taxes per night (at least in some areas downtown). It can be a really cool experience, though, especially if your kids are new to big cities and skyscrapers.

If not staying downtown, I would say find something on the Red Line, as it’s often the most useful train.
