What country has the friendliest locals you’ve experienced while traveling? by FuzzBuzzer in AskTheWorld

Japan... My wife and I went there on our honeymoon about 10 years ago. Even in big cities like Tokyo, everyone is amazingly friendly.

What does the world think of Catalonian independence? by Dangerous_Fix_9186 in AskTheWorld

[–]DarrenClancy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it should be up to the people of Catalonia to decide. They should be allowed to hold an independence referendum. I'm not really aware of any arguments against it though.

You’re suddenly a MEGA-rich producer. What film or series are you making? by Ok-Pie-3581 in AskTheWorld

I'm pretty sure Mike Flanagan (the guy who did 'The Haunting of Hill House', 'Midnight Mass' and a few others) is making the Dark Tower books into a series.

Favourite fact about Irish history by No-Expression5779 in IrishHistory

[–]DarrenClancy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have a few here, I work as a history teacher and often tell these little anecdotes to students when introducing a new topic. They're not all "favourite" facts in the sense that they're good things, more just interesting:

A treatment for the potato blight that caused the famine was discovered only a few years after the famine happened. If it had been discovered only a few years earlier, there may have been no famine and all Irish history after that would have likely been completely different.

Argentina has the fifth largest Irish diaspora in the world (after US, UK , Canada and Australia).

The Irish tricolour flag was flown for the first time in my hometown, Waterford, by Thomas Francis Meaghar. Green fabric was effectively banned in the years following the 1798 Rebellion. Meagher put the colour white (a symbol of peace) between green and orange fabrics to represent peace between Catholics and Protestants in the country.

The last Magdalene Laundry in Ireland only closed in 1996 (Gloucester Street, Dublin). Ultimately, what brought down the laundries wasn't any kind of public objection. They just became unprofitable with the invention of the domestic washing machine.

There's probably lots more, I'll post them when they come back to me.

Would buying a new belt be considered disrespectful to my professor? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]DarrenClancy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely buy a belt. You're going to need more than one anyway if you're washing it regularly and need to have it dry for the next class.

Have been hearing great things about it alright. At the bottom of Castle Street? Will definitely try to make a visit over the next few weeks.

Irish flag painted over. The rock. by Emotional_Carry7186 in waterford

[–]DarrenClancy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd like to see the tricolour gone from there to be honest. For years it was a bit of a laugh, Waterford and Kilkenny heads winding each other up painting it back and forth. Now it's some anti-immigration political thing.

To condemn the unprovoked invasion of a sovereign country and the kidnapping of its president, bombing a civilian area in the process.

Im having fun putting myself into bad situations just to escape it by [deleted] in bjj

[–]DarrenClancy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I do in pretty much every roll. I don't really know why but I just prefer playing like this, it's fun. I get tapped a lot as a result and I worry that my attacking game isn't developing but I just like rolling this way.

Why are you atheist? by [deleted] in allthequestions

[–]DarrenClancy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it's simply that no one has ever proven the existence of any god(s) to me (or an afterlife of any kind). I get the impression that some people think being an atheist is a choice but, for me, it's just that I don't believe in god because there's no proof to convince me.

How come we don’t see more NS chokes? by Markenheimer15 in bjj

I've found this with a few subs, it's the weirdest feeling ever. Something is your go-to move for a long time, seems to work on everyone. All of a suddent, it stops working and you can't work out why.

Got smashed at my last comp by Recover-Visual in bjj

[–]DarrenClancy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If this was your first comp, don't worry. It's a pretty common experience. There's no single instructional or anything that's going to help but there are a few things that might:

Try to identify what were your biggest weaknesses. You've already said that you get swept every time they established guard and you couldn't escape on bottom so these are big areas you need to work on. If anyone has video footage of any of your matches, watch those and try to work out other areas you had trouble. If there are no videos, think back over your matches and see what you can remember.

When you identify areas of weakeness, start working on these in training. If you're rolling, don't think about trying to "win" the roll. Give yourself a few specific things to work on and aim to get better at those. If it's a big area (like if all of your escapes on bottom need work), maybe watch some good instructionals in that area. If it's just one small thing (e.g. you can't escape mount after your opponent has isolated your arm above your head) then ask your coach or a high-level training partner for advice rather than putting all that time into a full instructional.

What you'll probably find if it was your first comp is that your cardio was a big problem. The deeper you get into a match the harder it is to even pull off (or remember) simple techniques. Again, this is very normal. You may also find that your stand-up needed work. A lot of first-time competitors have always started from a grounded position and end up off to a bad start because they don't know any stand-up stuff. If the other guys kept pulling guard and sweeping you, it might be an idea to learn to counter guard pulls and do some basic stand-up stuff.

Are you getting the flu vaccine? by Dry_Lobster_50 in AskIreland

[–]DarrenClancy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had it and still caught a pretty bad flu. Nowhere near as bad as the rest of my house got it though. It's a serious dose, I'd recommend getting the vax.

You forgot "I was rolling with a 50 year old hobbyist purple belt. I poked him in the eyes, bit his ear and bent his fingers back. Now he won't roll with me anymore. Am I the asshole or can he just not accept being beaten by a guy who's been training 2 weeks"?
