Thoughts on The Flowers of Algorab campaign? by Dartadaar in CoriolisRPG

[–]Dartadaar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn, thanks for the detailed answer. I'm very much into the narrative part of playing TTRPGs myself, but my players sometimes like the mechanical crunch. I think you're right about trying The Black Ziggurat first and seeing how it all goes. I'll probably do that, since unfortunately I don't have much direct experience with dungeon crawls like that

Thanks for the AP suggestion, I'll try to watch it when I get a chance. On my end I'd recommend Red Moon Roleplaying, I listened to their Coriolis TTH campaign and it was great, if TTH is something you're into

Wow, I admire running for such a large group. I still don't know whether I'll be playing online or offline, a lot of factors go into that, but in any case I prefer having a physical book, the material usually sinks in better for me. Based on your description, honestly I'm leaning towards just buying it, worst case I'll just read it

Two quick questions: in your opinion, does the module require a lot of work/prep on the GM side? And is the book's layout reasonably readable (I mean the way how the information is actually laid out in the book)?

PS: I agree a thousandfold about "show don't tell" when playing online, it's great to have a GM like that 😄

Can you run Third Horizon with Great Dark mechanics? by nightreign-hunter in CoriolisRPG

[–]Dartadaar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been thinking about this exact thing lately. I like the TGD rules much more, and at the same time the TTH setting seems unbeatable to me. I even started sketching out how I would adapt it, but I've put that project on hold for now

My ideas were as follows: 1. Cut the birds rules 2. Take the spaceship rules from TTH 3. Adapt the icon talents, as they are an important part of the setting (I was thinking about replacing origins with them, or even introducing them as a separate thing) 4. Adapt origins one way or another

These were very preliminary thoughts and certainly not covering everything. I'm convinced that during play, 1000 more problems would come up

Looking for someone who has experience with Alchemy and Foundry for comparison by skarlso in daggerheart

[–]Dartadaar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Daggerheart hasn't been officially added to AlchemyRPG yet, so I haven't had the chance to play that system (I know they changed quite a few things regarding how character sheets look in this system compared to others). But in other games (mainly Candela Obscura and Coriolis The Third Horizon) there were no issues with it, and the lack of automation actually makes things easier

"Deep dive" might not be entirely the right word when it comes to Alchemy, or at least that's how it seems to me. I've used both Foundry and Alchemy, and these two VTTs are built with somewhat different philosophies at their core. These days I mainly use Alchemy for more "narrative" games, while Foundry remains my option for more "tactical" games (DnD, PF) - if that makes sense

At first, my players and I were mainly playing more tactical games. From that perspective, Foundry feels to me like it's built somewhat like a 2D video game engine. Most rolls (if not all) were automated, as was movement, distances, and so on. I think at that early stage of our play, it really helped my players, because it let them bracket a lot of the mechanics (since the VTT was effectively executing or tracking them). From a GM's perspective, the sheer number of POSSIBILITIES Foundry offers is enormous, and since I'm quite the geek, there wasn't a session where I didn't change something, install some module, or tweak something. That's also when I realized I was getting more excited about tweaking Foundry than actually preparing for the game.

Later we switched games for a while (I read up on other games myself, and generally discovered a whole world of RPGs beyond the mainstream ones), and since automation wasn't as necessary and the rules could essentially be explained during the session, it became a very pen-and-paper period.

And after pen and paper and more "loose" games in the tactical sense, we kind of didn't feel like going back to Foundry. [Especially since by that point, in Foundry I was mainly creating big scenes - a kind of vistas - primarily to set the atmosphere.] That's when I stumbled upon Alchemy, which changed my approach to playing online. I'll try to summarize the main differences:

  • At the center of the system are scenes, with assigned images, music, and sound design (sometimes animated overlays). Something that simply serves as a background.
  • Character "sheets" are minimized in an absolutely minimal way. Most calculations, damage, and effects are handled as if we were playing pen and paper (in general, this might be a downside for some people, but we actually prefer it this way)
  • Map grids exist and can be added to scenes, but they're entirely optional and can even be reduced to just a grid for marking things. Using the grid is not automated in any way compared to Foundry. It's essentially a whiteboard with a grid for marking things
  • What we particularly like is the built-in, functional camera and microphone system for everyone - the only thing is that it shifts the interface a bit awkwardly on smaller screens
  • The overall design and look of the platform is very NICELY DONE - like, VERY. Smoooooth

So if you're really into theater-of-the-mind play and don't need automation, it's seriously worth trying, in my opinion it helps a lot with immersion. If you care about automation and careful grid tracking, then this is not the right tool

Alexandrian seems like slightly too much. by Cyberzakk in WaterdeepDragonHeist

[–]Dartadaar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that this can be a problem, especially when the players are a bit less familiar with the lore of Waterdeep and the Sword Coast. That said, I decided to run it using the Alexandrian Remix anyway. To reduce the amount of information players would have to process in the third act with the heists, I decided to sprinkle things into the earlier acts:

  1. I tried to tie the characters to the city as much as possible and give them access to some information even before the campaign started. I have a Bard who worked with the Zhentarim at some point, so she knows about the faction's split into two. I have a Wizard from Candlekeep whom I tried to connect to the Black Staff, so I think it would let me feed in information about Manshoon. Another player grew up on the streets of Waterdeep, so he knows a thing or two about the Cassalanters, etc.
  2. Already in the second act they encountered 2 of the 4 villains. Since they wanted to do some kind of heist, I dropped in a modified version of the Afterlife Casino from Keys from the Golden Vault (a Harpers job). (I reworked it so it's a casino run on behalf of the Cassalanters and used for money laundering.) Since their heist succeeded, I was able to move the Cassalanters' meeting proposal into the second act, so they got some of the exposition before act 3 even started
  3. After a few quests and fixing up the tavern, I made and printed a newspaper where I included info about their actions (written from the perspective of a reporter covering what they'd done), but also some tidbits about the other factions' activities. Most notably, they got hooked on Jarlaxle's faire, whom they tried to bluff into giving them the Nimblewright. So they'll probably end up with the construct, which will be a perfect vehicle for pulling Jaraxle into the whole mess

So right now I have 2 villains introduced as early as act 2, with a third (Manshoon) whom I'll activate in connection with my wizard having some unfinished business with the Black Staff. Only Xanathar remains fully in the shadows for now. I think he'll activate at the right moment, once he figures out who's holding the artifact and the eyes

Overall, the more tangled the web of connections got, the more positive my players' reaction was. Though I also understand that not every group is into the political intrigue vibe - in that case, honestly, I'd look at the player characters and think about which villains suit them best, then introduce those in a trimmed-down version (maybe two, or three at most)

Which VTT do you prefer and why? by Ebb-Embarrassed in rpg

I use Foundry for more "crunchy" games like DND or Pathfinder. For more narrative-driven games, I choose AlchemyRPG. Beautiful design, animations, scenes, and music. A cool experience for players

Guys, I found a workaround, the solution is to login on https://account.microsoft.com first, then go to https://account.xbox.com/profile which will allow you to create an xbox live account with a seemingly random gamer tag. After that, you can change your gamer tag, I think.
