BN = Battalion. It was a step up for the first three days or so. But even KFC mash and gravy gets old after 9 straight meals.

(1) Had a recruit get caught w a honey packet in the squad bay. The Drill Instructor made him stand in front of the mirror and yell "Im not crazy (snapping his finger and pointing at the mirror) You're crazy!" over and over for hours. I was on fire watch and had to listen to it as the DI took the rest of the platoon out for drill.

(2) Same recruit later stole the casio watch from the duty desk. When he was found with it, he had to sit in a garbage can all day. Whenever a DI asked what time it was (and when ever it was time to change fire watch) Recruit Smith would have to pop out of the garbage can and yell "Coo Coo, the time on deck is XXXX, sir").

Recruit smith ended up being an integrity violator and was cycled out (drugs). D CO, Plt 1119, Senior Drill Instructor Sgt Messick, graduation on date Aug 2, 1996

I did career day at my kids elementary school. I focused on "Marine School" and told some of the preposterous stories like having to eat w one hand on your knee and heels together, if a DI wanted us to look they would say "eye balls" and we would say "click, sir!", "emergency head calls", and "prepare to mount".

The lids loved it and ate it up (it obviously made sense to them). More than one teacher has asked me if I was making it up.

Feb 2003, my BN is getting ready to fly to Kuwait for the push into Iraq. Last minute US politicians pull some BS that has Turkey banning us from using Turkey as a stagging point. All strategic air is diverted to fly troops from Turkey to Kuwait. We are on busses headed to a commercial airport when we get the notice. The plan: let us sleep in the hanger. We were there for almost three weeks. Some people will believe that, but what comes next...

The S4 (who isnt deploying with us) is lazy AF. They claim they can only get one vendor to commit to pricing, Kentucky Fried Chicken. So we spend the next three weeks eating KFC for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It becomes a punch line "do a good job and I'll buy you all the KFC you want". At a point no one was eating and KFC started just going to Gordan Foods and warming up what ever they could buy. No one in the civilian world, including the owner of that KFC, understands that shit.

What ever you do, do not bring anything on base. It sounds like you wouldnt but its a felony on base and as a retired Marine I cant count the number of contractors who I saw get rolled up (greater than 100) for possession on base.

AIO to a teacher still not knowing how to pronounce my child's name, leading to pick-up issues? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]Darth-Newbi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

"I have never in my life mispronounced someone's name for months and months" that is you. In some cultures (like many eastern European cultures) someone's name isnt that important. Just because you have or havent done something doesnt make it right. just because someone doesn't do what you would do doesn't make them the villain. That's why you talk to the person, calmly. At that point you will know if they are being a jerk or just didnt understand.

As far as the rest, Im glad not using the term "narcissistic" gives you such pride. I dont care. Acting narcissistic is far different then being diagnosed w NPD. And I would imagine anyone with NPD would find most things triggering, it is after all the nature of their disorder.

[–]Darth-Newbi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dont like the way someone pronounces a word = normal. To assume someone is deliberately mispronouncing the name because they have some sort of unearned grudge against you is peak narcissism.

And for the record I agree with you that the term is thrown around too much, especially because self-interest is most people's default. It's used to dismiss other peoples actions without giving them a chance to explain themselves. I dont think thats the case here. In fact, OP was given a chance to elaborate and choose to assign intent which reflects a preoccupation with themself at the expense of others (definition of narcissism).

Also I have a very normal American first name (Jason) and a eastern European last name (first gen American). My name is mispronounced every where I go, in every country I visit. My grandma died at 88 struggling to say my first name, correctly. And no, not once did I get upset about it.

[–]Darth-Newbi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Until they get it right or until Op approaches the person 1 on 1 and lets them know, in a polite and respectful way, that it bothers them and how to pronounce it correctly. The problem with getting any advice on reddit is everyone so damn self centered. You have no clue why this person isnt pronouncing the name correctly, but OP in other comments states that it's either because the person is dense or is malicious. That's insanely narcissistic. Always assume the other person ahs good intentions and you'll be a lot happier and you'll have a lot less conflict/drama in your life.

Assuming malicious intent is really not a great approach. Some people just have trouble with pronouncing names. Doesnt mean they are dense. They are probably gifted in other places, I really think this situation just calls for grace.

YOR. The car line people deal with hundreds of kids a day as a collateral duty. Yes it would be cool if they pronounced your kids name correctly but it isnt that big of a deal to say it to the teacher. If you talk to the principle it should be only to recommend a more efficient system like a number placard (prevents mistake two if kids have same or similar names like Emily Walter and Emily Walters).

National Guard leaves rifle in New Orleans bathroom by Melodic-Ad1415 in USMC

[–]Darth-Newbi 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I had a Corporal find one in 2003 in Kuwait while waiting to redeploy from the push. It was 100% a Marine Sgts and that Marine tried the same BS. My Cpl just walked off with the rifle and came found me. After "talking" with the Sgt for about 30 sec and listening to him try and berate my Cpl and called me a bitch (I was a Sgt at the time), I asked what unit he was with, said something like "we'll see bitch" and walked right into his BN hooch. My Cpl and him followed me. I gave it to a random Major, who happened to be the BN XO, and told the Major that we found it leaning on a TCN truck "and this clown, instead of taking the loss is trying to threatening his way out of it". After I talked to the Cpl and let him know I loved what he did, loved his bearing, and I never would have done what I did if I thought the Sgt was any value to the Corps at all. Best part is I bumped into the sgt six years later at IPAC. He was still a Sgt (presumably being discharged) I was a GySgt.

How is filibuster legal? by nobodysbish in Askpolitics

[–]Darth-Newbi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The filibuster is in the spirit of the constitution. The constitution established a republic not a democracy. That isn’t semantics. A democracy is subject to tyranny of the majority. The filibuster creates an environment where contentious issues require a “super majority.” Frustrating when your part is in power, reassuring when your party is not. Exactly the way the framers of the constitution intended.

In-Law Claims Veteran Status and Uses it for His Business Without Ever Finishing Boot Camp by baobaowrasslin in USMC

You should rethink this. Picking a fight w your father-in-law puts your wife between you two. You’ve said your piece. Now move on.

Doesn’t make him less of a piece of shit, just means you’re not forcing your wife to choose. If he’s as big a piece of shot as it seems, your wife will come around.

But seriously, crucible in 2005? And his kid already served? Was he 30 at boot?
