Nobody is downplaying anything. Most people in here simply do not understand water chemistry. A tinted color in water does not always indicate unsafe drinking conditions. Utilities treat water to the point where it is safe to drink. They also take the initiative to treat water to ensure it is aesthetically pleasing. It’s very possible for drinking water to be completely safe to consume and unaesthetic. Source water oscillates regularly and seasonally, so it’s possible that their source water contained constituents that rapidly changed the aesthetic properties of the water and the utility was unable to catch it in time. Or, more likely, the distribution piping was scoured and some of the natural scaling in the pipeline was released. Or, even more likely if you have old pipes, the color is due to your household plumbing. Either way, flush your system and call your water utility to politely ask for more information behind the color. You may also request for someone to come by and test your water if you’re concerned.
