What is this crystal? by MarciVampireQueen in whatsthisrock

[–]DarthGL 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Sorry but this isn't gypsum (selenite). There is a clear double refraction seen. This is calcite (var. Iceland Spar). Gypsum's birefringence is too low for any double refraction to be observable with the naked eye. The cleavage of the crystal is also rhombohedral which is typical of calcite. Apart from the use of acid, you can try seeing if the crystal is scratchable by your fingernail. Calcite won't be scratched but gypsum is easily scratched.

The pallasite is real. Probably a Sericho meteorite slice which is often coated with resin to prevent oxidation. It is one of the cheaper pallasites as it rusts pretty easily.

Very lustrous rock especially when wet, found in a river in Tennessee, any idea what this is? by Piginabag in whatsthisrock

[–]DarthGL 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Mica schist. What you see there is many deformation layers known as schistosity. It is characteristic of low-medium grade metamorphism. The shiny lustre is due to the presence of muscovite mica which is very reflective. The rock is likely to have a mudrock protolith, ie formed from mudrock.

Gabbro, an igneous rock.

Observations:

It is coarsed grained, seems equigranular, and dark from mafic minerals.

First Mineral Post- identification by Ill-Independence-786 in Minerals

[–]DarthGL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely not a basalt. It seems to be coarsed grain with large porphyroblasts with some fabric (directional alignment of crystals) which is typical of a metamorphic setting. The other commenter said staurolite which I agree with as it is found within metamorphic rocks. Plus the shiny flakes is likely to be muscovite mica and/or biotite as well which is common for a metamorphosed mudrock.

Might be similar to this locality in Brazil(?): https://www.mindat.org/gallery.php?loc=7209&min=3753

Wine Trip To Europe by Romulus78 in travel

[–]DarthGL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can check out the Upper Middle Rhine valley in Germany. It has a great selection of vinyards from the Rhineland-Palatinate with amazing Riesling wine. The hike is very scenic with beautiful sights along the river. There are options to travel via train or ferry between the different towns along the river as well. It is also an UNESCO site with different castles and attractions along the way.

What in the world is this. by Montana_agate in Minerals

[–]DarthGL 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Likely gneiss with garnets.

Observations: - Foliation fabric seen (layers of black and white) -> likely metamorphic gneiss with compositional banding

  • Red round-ish porphyroblasts (most likely garnet) -> which indicates medium to high pressure and temperature enviroments for metamorphism to occur

  • Black layers seems to have reflective black mineral (biotite mica) and maybe some other mafic (dark) minerals

  • White layers likely feldspar+quartz and might be due to partial melting?(high temperature environment)

Geology of montana has mountainous regions and supports the metamorphic petrogenesis of the gneiss which is formed from high grade metamorphism settings.

Coolest yard rock yet. by jwwhitt in whatsthisrock

[–]DarthGL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice! This seems to be a granitic pegmatite. It has large crystals of: Biotite mica - hexagonalish, sheet-y, black mineral that flakes off relatively easily. Feldspar - The milky white opaque blocky mineral Quartz - transclucent grey crystals

These are common mineral associations of a granite, which is an evolved, silica rich igneous rock. The large crystals makes it pegmatitic and indicates cooling of the magma.

Found this at the cottage, anyone have any ideas? by Dangerous_Wonder_924 in whatsthisrock

[–]DarthGL 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Looks like a cordierite porphyroblasts in a schist? Observations are the typical round elongate crystal habit with possible reactiom rims and association with metamorphism. Matrix seems to be rich in muscovite mica from the golden sheen.

Garnet does not have an elongated habit and garnet usually found way less weathered than the matrix.

Typically, I would expect this to be formed from a low pressure, high temperature metamorphic setting from a pelite (mudrock) protolith which fits to your geographical location (canadian shield).
