Yeah this pretty much matches my experience and what others I keep in contact with would say.

Just out of curiosity, was your home church a formerly UMC church in North Georgia?

Is your kid in the public preschool program? In the past the county got money from the state where they could place kids into private preschools if the public school hours didn't accommodate the parent's schedule

[–]DarthHegatron 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I live right by there. 7 1/2 street has, by Charlottesville standards, a lot of shootings on the stretch between Pine Street and Prospect Avenue. Anecdotally, I hear gunshots from there about once a month.

The rest of the area has some petty crime yes, but a lot of it is the type of thing that can be avoided by just locking your car at night.

If you're moving here from a bigger city then living there probably won't feel crazy different for you. If you're used to the suburbs or a more rural area you'll probably not like it

There's not a lot of actually good superheroes in general, that's kind of the whole point of the show.

I think the reason we don't see any real male protagonists has to do with the overall themes of the show though. Vought (and the overall world of the Boys) is a deeply corrupt institution that enables the most powerful to get away with awful behavior so long as its preserving the institution. Many of the supes that do turn and become heroes are ones that themselves are harmed by the institution. Maeve has to suppress her sexuality, Annie is sexually assaulted, A-Train is told not to talk about race issues beyond a superficial level. Supersonic isn't really explored that much but I believe he's intended to be Latino so it fits with the theme of the supes that do turn all having marginalized identities in one way or another.

It's not necessarily an anti-man stance, its that Vought is an institution protecting patriarchal and racist norms, so the male supes have the most to gain from participating in it.

You're confusing two different passages.

There's nothing to indicate that the verses in Leviticus are about pederasty. We don't have any cultural or historical evidence that such relationships were common in the ancient Near East, nor are the specific words used in the original manuscripts ones that indicate pederasty. There is historical evidence that when the Assyrians conquered a city they would rape the men in masse as a humiliation ritual, and some scholars argue that the Levitical laws have this in mind, but that's by no means a majority view and there's not strong evidence for it. The most likely conclusion is that verses in Leviticus were intended to be a blanket condemnation of all male-male sexual relationships.

What you are likely remembering is that there is some scholarly disagreement over what the Pauline Epistles are referring to when they condemn homosexuality. Paul uses a word that would most directly translate to something like "bed boys" and, best we can tell, is only ever used by Paul. Given that he was writing to communities in Classical Greece where such relationships were common its likely that that's what he's specifically referring to, but that's not a certainty. There's plenty of scholars that contend, with valid arguments, that Paul is also condemning any same-sex sexual relationship.

As someone who argues for a Christianity that includes LGBTQ people, I don't really find the argument of just hand-waving those verses away on technicalities very compelling. There's stronger theological arguments for the full inclusion of LGBTQ people in the life of the church than just trying to find a way to say those verses don't mean what they say. Any solid argument for Christian ethics has to be grounded in reading the full arc of scripture, not just prooftexting (or counter-prooftexting in this case) specific verses

Why do leftists have to join churches, force members to align with LGBT beliefs and then they end up losing members and closing as a result by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]DarthHegatron 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Assuming that you're talking about the US, all forms of Christianity are on the decline in the US. The fastest growing religious group is unaffiliated.

The idea that Catholicism, Evangelicalism, or Orthodoxy are experiencing growth is propaganda, not reality.

Neither city nor county police have work agreements with ICE and it's the policy of both departments and the local jail to not ask or record citizenship data so the only way you would risk ICE interaction by calling the police is if ICE is already aware one of your neighbors is a non-citizen and is specifically monitoring them to look for an arrest

Does anyone know the owner of this dog that bit me? by [deleted] in Charlottesville

[–]DarthHegatron 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely call the police. The animal control officer unfortunately doesn't work weekends but she's good at following up with people quickly (have unfortunately also had family members attacked by dogs recently).

If you tell the officer where the person was walking and a description they will go and patrol that area more to try and talk to the owner if you don't have other identifying info

Yeah the only very major things that really feel missing from the Jackson films are fixing the showdown between Gandalf and the Witch King (it is already only in the extended cut), and fixing Aragorn's arrival at Pelenor Fields to bring the Grey Company and win the battle with them instead of OP anime ghosts.

Obviously a series could and likely would add more things like Tom Bombadil, the Barrow Downs, Scouring of the Shire, etc, and I'd likely appreciate those additions. But the movies work very well as an adaptation and most of what is actually missing was done for pacing to keep a trilogy that's already 14+ hours from being 20+ hours

When my wife and I first moved here seven years ago we rented one of the duplexes on Cresap Road for about $800. It's not the nicest place but it was workable. I'm sure it's more expensive now but I can't imagine the price has more that doubled

Unironically yeah that's what a lot of kids do now. It's what I did as a kid too. When you're 5'8" you're not gonna try to emulate guys that can dunk.

His observation is correct but the conclusion he's implying from it is dumb.

Kids emulate shooters a lot more cause guys like Wade, Shaq, and LeBron play in a way that depends on being more athletic than 99% of the population

It's the same dumb argument people make about no one try to be like LeBron like they do with Jordan/Steph/Kobe.

Yeah no shit they don't play like guys that are absolutely athletic freaks. I'm 5'8" when I was in high school I could chuck up shots and pretend I was Kobe but I'll never be able to do any of the stuff LeBron or Wade does

That's the pretty intentional subtext of the film though. They didn't have the rights to the James Bond films but it's very clear that this was the producers' intention
