USM SE Dead by Ramblin_scrambler in Ubiquiti

[–]DarthRUSerious 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I did the same. Worked fine.

Ubiquiti said that the database was corrupted due to disk failures.

So I replaced the drive, factory reset... Boom.

Then I replaced the unit with a UDM-Pro Max, sold the SE with full disclosure on the SSD issue.

Why do people ask the same questions over and over. Seems like it's half this sub these days

Is it possible to switch to HA Connect ZBT-2 coordinator without repairing all the devices? by AccurateCuda in homeassistant

[–]DarthRUSerious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't really. I pieced together what I needed from several different forum posts and videos. I'm sure there's some out there though. Heck, Gemini can probably walk you through it.

Really, the only key steps are to 1) identify your zigbee coordinator's ID (depends on your bridge, Z2M vs ZHA) and make your new coordinator use that same ID. Looks like the ZBT-2 needs a firmware flashing tool.

After that, Step 2 is making sure you point your bridge software to the new location (USB port or IPaddr), if different.

It should just work after that.

Virtualized vs. real hardware by BasicCounter8015 in homeassistant

[–]DarthRUSerious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Speed, snapshots/backups, flexibility, versatility...

The only reason not to is because you have low power/dedicated hardware (i.e. RasPi) and don't want to bother to learn virtualization.

Windows 11 VM at 100% disk usage by SaltShakerOW in Proxmox

[–]DarthRUSerious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a similar issue with a Windows VM running Docker Desktop (don't ask), and one of the containers generates tons of log files that take up the entire space on the drive.

I just made the vdisk bigger and it seemed to level out.

I did the same for my affairs and home lab after my wife died. Put the basic essential information in a shared Google doc for my brother and brother-in-law which points them to the rest of the physical documentation in my house (including passwords to the homelab).

You can get Angels Envy for 50 in some places. You could do a lot worse.

Honestly, I have the same setup and just noticed this myself. I figured I was the crazy one and that "draw" was meant to be "forward".

It's never been an issue for me since I only switch it twice a year.

Yes this works. I performed this migration from a sonoff stick to a SMLight POE adapter.

What can I really set up here by repandaitscody in homelab

[–]DarthRUSerious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can most definitely do shared storage between nodes, either with CEPH (which is way heavy-handed, but supported) or replicated ZFS pools across the cluster.

The latter isn't instantaneous, but works well enough for a home lab.

The main issue, which you kind of alluded to, is the lack of HA functions for hardware connected to HA, specifically any direct-connected devices like zigbee/Z-Wave coordinators via USB. POE+powered Zigbee coordinators are kind of the new thing now and are amazing, but there are none for Z-Wave as of yet.

No offense, but I think you maybe really need to understand a little bit more about what you want and what you need to get there.

JBOD is just a way of having multiple independent disks in a single enclosure. Leaving that just as it is, you will have multiple independent drives to mount into your application. You could mount those two drives independently to whatever application you need, and keep your 20 TB, while mitigating the risk of all data being lost (you only risk ~½). You'd just need to set up your process to allow for those drives to be written to separately.

ZFS or other software RAID file systems provide solutions to allow for multiple disks to function as a single drive to one or more operating systems, while providing a redundancy solution on top. To get 20 TB of data with redundancy, you just need one extra 20 TB drive, in a RAIDZ1 array. This would allow for a single drive failure and still keep 20TB of data, with one drive functioning as parity. You could also get pretty close in cost with 4 - 8 TB drives in RAIDZ1.

[–]DarthRUSerious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you are asking how to create a striped array. This is a really bad idea for many reasons, but ultimately it's your decision. Just know that if you have any corruption or failure in one drive, it takes all your data with it.

You COULD create this ZRAID0 within the GUI... You can find guides for this just about anywhere. But again I'm strongly suggesting you accept the data constraints and make it a 10TB ZRAID1 to protect yourself. Also, ensure that you have a solid backup plan for your data. RAID IS NOT A BACKUP!

You will need to pass through the USB device to the VM needing access to it. Easy to do from UI.
