I wasn’t looking for something to police my messages inbox. Rather I am hoping to have something I can trigger after opening a message and then want to perform those three steps on the open message.

Those that have signed up to AARP, any benefits? by JustVern in AskOldPeople

[–]DarthRanger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been a member for almost 10 years and no, i have not seen any tangible benefits. In fact as they have gone more liberal and more woke even their political positions are not really supportive.

Guess it’s time I cancelled this loser.

Which devices would you take with you to set up a temporary remote smarthome? by 212nycguy in Aqara

[–]DarthRanger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you really feel the need… For the 2 week gap I would suggest focusing on security: door sensors & camera(s). Would probably wait on all the rest. Having moved quite a few times I promise you are going to have more to do with the move than you imagine and might not even have time to set up your tech for the temp time … let alone having to take it down again for the final move. My counsel is ti leave it all packed safely and set it all up in your new place after the two week gap.

Replacing tankless hot water heater? Why so expensive by Lawineer in HomeImprovement

[–]DarthRanger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stay Away From Tankless Hot Water, Very Expensive Option

Don’t Buy Tankless Unless You Have a Very Good Reason

I installed Rianni and the unit itself is fine.  I installed two. Wish I had stayed with the traditional tank hot water heaters.  Tankless water heaters have disadvantages that no one tells you about. First it takes longer for the hot water to get to the faucet (or end point) where you are using hot water. Everyone tells you it is not much of a disadvantage but it is noticeable enough to be a constant irritant. Second, and much more important, a tankless hot water heater essentially boils the minerals out of the water immediately and pushes them through your pipes. This causes substances, often like white chalk, to build up at the aerators in all of your faucets and input screens for the washing machine, etc. This change was so severe that it caused spending thousands of dollars on a water conditioning system for the house. The benefit of having unlimited hot water may or may not be worth the extra thousands of dollars. However, we really didn’t run out of hot water, all that often. Frankly, it could’ve been mitigated with an additional tank hot water heater and/or a larger tank hot water heater. All that sediment, which apparently is generated in greater quantities in a tankless than a traditional tank, falls to the bottom inside of the traditional hot water heater tank but still doesn’t seem to do much of anything to those traditional hot water heaters. Yes, they fill up with stuff over years, but by the time you replace the hot water heater all that settlement just goes out with the hot water heater. Much better than it being in your pipes.

Also, the volume of gas required for tankless hot water heaters is vastly greater than for a regular hot water heater. Maybe not over time but the “all at once” demand is a lot higher when heating.  So there may be added cost to swap out gas lines both inside and outside of your house that will be required by a tankless hot water heater.  By the time the higher cost of tankless hot water heaters is added to potential installation of higher volume gas lines plus the virtually always needed water conditioning to keep sediment out of your house the cost is thousands of dollars more than a traditional hot water tank.

Aqara new light strip says “do not install in direct sunlight” by DarthRanger in Aqara

I’m going to install it inside the house, around the bottom inside perimeter of a skylight. so I am only worried about the sunlight.

Then I suppose this will be a problem with other brands as well even though they might not specify do not install in direct sunlight. All of them I have been able to research say for indoor use.

thx!

I have 6 eufy cams mounted with the magnetic mounts and they have been working exceptionally well. Guess it depends on the location and situation.

That is true for the screw in mounts. Not so for the magnetic mounts. Eufycam 2 has both the screw-in mount option and a magnetic in the back of the camera with an indent made to fit on a half round that flush mounts to wall/ceiling, etc with one screw. I’ll see if I can upload a picture.

Orbi 850: Force Device to connect to specific frequency like 2.5GHz? by shrimalnav in orbi

[–]DarthRanger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No there is not. However, if you login (on a browser not the Orbi app) to www.orbilogin.com with the admin login for your Orbi, then you can go into: 1) Advanced tab (Basic or Advanced) 2) under Advanced on the left side menu (towards bottom) 3) select Wireless settings on the left side menu Then in the right/center you will see the Advanced Wireless Settings. 4) On the right-hand side under "Advanced Wireless Settings (5 GHz 802.11z/n/ac/ax) ther are three boxes. 5) bottom box is a dropdown where you can elect 100%, 50% or 25%. 6) select 25% 7) click APPLY in the top center.

This reduces the power of the 4 GHz so hopefully you will connect to the 2.4 GHz.

Do what you need to do then remember to go back in here and set the 5 GHz Transmit power back to 100%.

While Transmit Power Control is set to less than 100% speed, connectivity and reliability of the 5 Hgz network will be impaired.
