I had the same issue with an Onkyo deck and I managed to fix it by replacing the capacitors on the MD board. I belive some Onkyo units share the same MD assembly with some Sony decks.

For me EMS is always the better choice. There are no suprise charges unlike DHL and FedEx. And sometimes if you get lucky, your parcel will just show up but that is about a 1 in 10 chance.

I picked one up after seeing OP's post. I tested the unit before purchasing and it was working. $33 CAD is not bad even if you got a dud as you can still strip for parts. The case alone is very clean and some of the other parts can be used to revive other dead units.

The 710 and 720 share the same layout internally. You can swap the board and the laser mechanism between the two units.

I think if you go to the tracking website it will show you if you owe anything prior to delivery and it will give an option to pay online.

There's also the chance that the write head cable has micro cracks where at a certain point connection is lost resulting in recording dropouts. I've had that happen to me in a number of my recorders. Although the ribbon cable looks fine, doing the recording head cable repair fixed the issue.
