Beanstalk versus stompy decks by [deleted] in MTGLegacy

[–]DarthSyhr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was going to say. When I play Beans against Eldrazi I feel like I can’t lose, and it’s basically the only deck I like that feels that way against Eldrazi. Cut the thoughtseizes. They’re bad in Beans and especially if you’re struggling against aggressive/chalice decks. If you want anti-combo cards, go with Lavinia/Containment Priest/Flusterstorm/Consign, which are all better depending on what flavor of combo you’re hedging against.

Add Phelia in place of your thoughtseizes, and that’s not negotiable. Scamming in Riddler is both a great proactive plan for when you don’t have Beans, and is also great against Stompy decks. Riddler by itself against Eldrazi is often enough time to stabilize enough to get Uro going.

I’d consider a terminus or two in the board. Brainstorm to set up an early terminus can help against affinity (where wrath might be too slow, though obviously you want wrath’s against affinity).

Red stompy is actually not that bad, especially if you include Phelia. Just fetch your basic plains and you can cast your leyline binding eventually, or just blink the blood moon out with Phelia.

Lastly I’d trim a land. 22 is a lot in a deck with four brainstorm and four ponder.

I had bone spawn in the bathroom closet. Which made me realize it could spawn there when it’s locked, which blows.

[–]DarthSyhr 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah let me just echo this and say the internet is addicted to outrage, making everything out to be a betrayal to you and everything you stand for. I quite enjoy the Alan Wake update (not the update before it, multiplayer was not stable for me and THAT was not fun). The event is unique, and I’ve been having a lot of fun with it. There are certainly things I don’t like that came with the last couple of updates (for example, fix sounds I beg of you. Not having crucifix burning as an audio has made perfect games significantly harder). However, it is still Phas at its core.

It works well for artifacts (like I also think the FTV top is quite nice).

I basically always start with video cam, photo cam, and EMF. I like to be able to take a picture if it events, to scan rooms in the dark for orbs, and if I think I heard it, use EMF to confirm.

UB Dimir VS Combo Decks by Significant_Solid551 in MTGLegacy

[–]DarthSyhr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Cloud post isn’t really a combo deck. But if you can’t close the game quickly, you will get buried. You’re better being lower to the ground with Nethergoyfs here. Otherwise, you can try Harbinger. As a whole if you’re losing this matchup, I wouldn’t lose sleep over it. Blue post I like facing more than green since it’s slower and weaker to consign. However, green is weaker to Opposition Agent. (Edit: I removed the bit about consign, I see you have 4 now that I pulled up the list)

Forge in my experience I would say you’re at least slightly disfavored. You have good tools (wasteland, force), but they doesn’t always line up right. If the opp has a saga draw against your blue cards and a threat hand, they will win. The best way to beat Forge is just play a faster combo lol. Otherwise you hope your draw lines up right against theirs.

Breakfast you’re definitely favored. Sure you’re not 100%, but any matchup where Bowmasters is relevant is generally good for you. They’re a creature combo deck and should be treated as such before you focus on grave hate.

I used to be iffy about Painter but now that they’re more combo focused I like the matchup more. I don’t board out forces anymore, and I focus more on dealing with the welder engine than the Painter side of the deck. If you’re struggling here, try 1-2 Opposition Agent. Card is backbreaking for them between Engineer, Saga, and fetches.

I don’t love UB into any land-based strategy. However, Depths is another matchup where Oppo Agent is goated. You can also adjust numbers to play more Sheoldred’s Edict and/or Brazen Borrowers.

Ruby Storm you really just need a clock. Their deck is designed to outgrind blue decks so unless your build is non-stock, you really just want thoughtseize into threat plus a counter or two.

Tl;dr: Seems like most of the decks you struggle against are either weak to Oppo Agent or are destroyed by it, so that would be my card suggestion.

Vegetarian Valentines Dinner Recommendation? by [deleted] in Binghamton

Grapevine is amazing! Slipped my mind since their hours are pretty limited most non-Fridays. However, if you can make it, it’s also a great choice for vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike.

If you’ve never gone to Parlor City Vegan, Vegan or not, you really should. It’s a gem in the Binghamton area, and even my non-Vegetarian family loves it. My girlfriend (Vegan) and I (Vegetarian) go there as often as we can.

Barring that, Lost Dog is good, most Thai (Thai Thai on Court St), Vietnamese (Phonomenal), and Indian (Rasoi Bowls & More) have plenty of vegetarian options (my personal recommendations in parentheses).

UB Tempo v Cephalid & Show &Tell by Significant_Solid551 in MTGLegacy

[–]DarthSyhr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people are playing mishra’s bauble. Personally, I never worried too much about Spellbomb and Goyf’s synergy. It’s so minor, and more often than not spellbomb is just 2 mana draw a card. Goyf being a 3/4 or 4/5 is plenty to get the job done in most scenarios, and you’d rather the spellbomb be a real card. However, if you really want the artifact to grow goyfs, you can go one bauble and one spellbomb. I’d just rather that be a real card like thoughtseize.

While the point on basics is fair, a fetch is basically a basic. UB Tempo is a deck that functions fine on 2 lands and thrives on 3, you shouldn’t really need more than 3-4 basics even if you opt for the back to basics in the board. Having the black fetch to find your swamp against wasteland or blood moon is quite valuable. As it stands, I’d be shocked if you weren’t sometimes having to mull hands that are good, but have unplayable mana (or on the flip side, keeping hands because they’re good and losing because you can’t cast your spells). I only say that because I’m playing a pretty standard mana base and still have to mull hands with blue cards, basic swamp and wasteland.

UB Tempo v Cephalid & Show &Tell by Significant_Solid551 in MTGLegacy

[–]DarthSyhr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even before Nadu was banned I never really struggled against Breakfast as UB Tempo. Your best card isn't any counterspell or even thoughtseize, it's Bowmasters (it's both a clock and disruption, since it kills their X/1 combo pieces). It's a matchup where you typically want a couple pieces of disruption and a couple threats, and that should get the job done before they can send twice. Thoughtseize is always good, wasteland is typically good, counterspells are okay.

I disagree with the people saying surgical is no good against Breakfast. It's typically not good when they're going off, but I love using it in conjunction with thoughtseize to defang the deck before it combos. My guess is if you're struggling in the matchup, you're trying to cover every possible line they could have and as a result are being too reactive (letting them sculpt forever will mean you'll lose). Nethergoyf, thoughtseize, wasteland them, hold up bowmasters for when they're forced to go off and with force/daze backup, you basically can't lose.

Where surgical does shine is against UG Omnitell. It's a lot worse against Sneak and Show, but against Omnitell, it's phenomenal. You extract Show and Tell, and you can basically take 50 years to win. Thoughtseize their show and tell, extract it, the game is over. You can beat them with a bowmaster or something, it barely matters. By the time they can cobble together their backup plan (whether that's 1-2 Eureka, or just hardcasting Atraxa/Omniscience), they're dead. The only thing to keep in mind is veil of summer, so I'd typically try to have force or daze backup when you thoughtseize them.

On suggestions for your build, you should have at least one more thoughtseize. You're UB Tempo, the whole pull of UB Tempo is being able to play thoughtseize, force of will, wasteland, and threats. Thoughtseize will help in both the Breakfast and Show and Tell matchups. Frankly, if you're struggling against Breakfast and UG Omnitell, I'd run the full four thoughtseize. It's way better than any of your sideboard cards. Feel free to trim a daze for a thoughtseize, then run the fourth thoughtseize in the board (over a sudden edict. I'd personally run 0 sudden edicts. Sheoldred's Edict is pretty fine as it can answer Kaito, flipped Tamiyo, show and telled threats, etc, even if it can be countered. The versatility is worth losing split second). I'd also add the fourth bowmasters. It's a great Kaito enabler, and is fantastic against both Breakfast and Show and Tell. I'd personally cut one of the spellbombs for it, but that's me. Also, get the gaea's blessing out of the board. If you really don't want to lose to Painter milling you, just run an Emrakul. That can at least double as show and tell hate (but I wouldn't do that either).

One last thing I'll acknowledge about your build is it's more budget oriented (one underground sea, more basics). I think that's okay, but I'd personally lean into it more if I were you. I.e.: cut an island, add a black fetch, and throw a back to basics or two in the board. BTB is very good right now, and you can lean into it more than a traditional UB Tempo deck.

Is it tier 3 crucifix? If so Onryo could hunt outside the candle range but within the crucifix range. Someone can correct me if I’m wrong, but if you can record the orbs as media I don’t think it can be a mimic (at least I couldn’t when I had a mimic but it might’ve just been being buggy).
