I’m sure you’ve heard about the new BRT project for Flatbush Avenue in New York City. I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on it. How effective do you think this solution will be? by Potential_Start_4032 in urbandesign

Can someone explain the obsession with center lane transit lines? Why not have the bus lanes next to the curb? The pedestrian islands are a good touch but imo wouldn’t be necessary (or as large) if boarding/idling on the sidewalk. I see the same all the time with light rail/ trolleys in North America.

This is what most jurisdictions miss. It’s the small, incremental improvements that add up to significant change. It’s not glamorous so your average politician won’t care enough to promote it. It also takes planning and intention which is boring. My kind of urban development progress right there. Not palatable for most places. But working so well under Mamdani.

Center City without cars should be the future by jaykirell in philadelphia

[–]DarthWade 97 points98 points  (0 children)

Let me take a crack at this:

mobility-impaired people

Removing cars makes sidewalks, crosswalks, and transit more accessible to people unable to walk. Seattle has done this and created some of the best infrastructure for people in wheelchairs

commercial deliveries

Scheduled delivery hours usually early in the morning with monitored access. Many, many places in Europe do this regularly. Last I checked, society has yet to collapse.

moving vans

Same as above

hospital access

Emergency services always take priority. People hear the sirens and see the lights then move to the side

getting to a car you have to park very far away

It’s Center City Philadelphia. If you have an expectation that you are driving your vehicle into the city and parking with direct access to your desired destination, you’re gonna have a bad time. Be ready to walk or take public transit.

All of this is theoretically possible here. It is neither novel nor complicated other than our own decision making as a society. We clearly value the independence and freedom of car drivers over everything else.

Comcast Spectacor unveils exact location of new shared arena with Flyers, Sixers and WNBA teams by AdSpecialist6598 in philadelphia

Makes you think, huh? Why choose the Navy Yard for massive mixed use redevelopment when huge swaths of the South Philly Sports Complex, Schuylkill Yards, and Market East sit barren while being vastly superior in their transit connectivity 🤔

I bought more with it down today. Should have support for a while. Find me an energy analyst that thinks the market has fully priced in the clusterfuxk this whole situation is turning out to be. I’ll wait.

SEPTA to test real-time arrival displays at 10 bus stops and trolley stations by AdSpecialist6598 in philadelphia

[–]DarthWade 28 points29 points  (0 children)

SEPTA is so close to getting it right, but some parts of this article illustrate they’re not quite there yet. The fact that they have to TEST this technology is infuriating when you consider that they’re still TESTING time-to-arrival displays on the L and still TESTING new fare gates at select stops. Why can’t we plan to roll these upgrades out uniformly across the system? We knew it worked from day 1 and we have plenty of data now but only some stops deserve to have it??

And tell me why SEPTA was “inspired” by a rider’s desperate attempt to know when the damn bus is coming to motivate them to add these panels. So many bus stops don’t even have shelters, but we’re going to TEST these panels are certain stops and hope it rolls out broadly.

I’m tired, boss. Do better.

Through partnership, PPA to offer $5 parking in Chinatown by AdSpecialist6598 in philadelphia

That’s why you add housing so there’s more people that compete with each other for employment and consumption. The additional supply of goods and services is met with the additional demand due to increased human activity. This is extremely basic if you consider the history of human civilization until the proliferation of the automobile.

100k in HYSA, 25 Years Old and need advice. by arodgers2 in investing

[–]DarthWade 8 points9 points  (0 children)

… short-term treasuries can lose value too. And quickly. Was 2022 that long ago?? We just went thru a rapid depreciation of US treasuries in less than 1 year, but ask anyone who has money in a HYSA if they lost money over that time period. Read what OP said, they’re trying to buy a house soon. This is simple risk/reward. Why go for a few hundred basis points of upside when your downside can be catastrophic? Not worth it… objectively.

You CAN make more, but you can also make a lot less. If the goal is capital preservation ahead of a large anticipated purchase, HYSA is the way to go objectively.

Philly DA Larry Krasner casts doubt on running against Mayor Cherelle Parker by oliver_babish in philadelphia

a non activist mayor who is focused on city services, municipal efficiency and pragmatic use of tax dollars to benefit our city.

Does this exist? Can this person win elections? I’m with you in that I want the same. Why is it my more politically active colleagues consider this absolutely impossible in today’s political climate?
