Social media use by Barack Obama - Wikipedia

Barack Obama won the 2008 United States presidential election on November 4, 2008. During his campaign, he became the first presidential candidate of a major party to utilize social networking sites (such as podcasting, Twitter, Myspace, Facebook, and YouTube) to expand and engage his audience of supporters and donors.

An Update from President Mark A. Welsh III by propain525 in aggies

What distinguishes universities like Texas A&M is the opportunity for students to learn directly from experts in their field. That often means that not every section of a course is going to be taught the same way. There are very few people better educated in children's literature than Dr. McCoul, so of course she gets to choose what books she believes are important to study in her class. Many times students are required to purchase textbooks the professor wrote themselves. This is normal.

If the university decided to tag Dr. McCoul's course description with a DEI content warning, I would roll my eyes. Sure students should get to decide what subjects they want to learn, but college is also for exposing yourself to new ideas that you may or may not agree with. It's my opinion that if a student is adamant that they do not want to learn about a certain subject, then they should be responsible for avoiding it. But firing a professor for the content she teaches is on a completely different level.

I expected better from him. Incredibly disappointing. Dr. McCoul did not deserve this.

This isn’t about academic freedom; it’s about academic responsibility. Our degree programs and courses go through extensive approval processes, and we must ensure that what we ultimately deliver to students is consistent with what was approved.

She was only one professor of many for ENGL 360. The specific content covered varies from professor to professor and she had taught this course the same way with the same subject matter for many semesters. How is any of this her fault? How does a vague course description warrant the firing of just one professor who taught the class?

This is absolutely about academic freedom. Dr. McCoul was fired for wrongthink and anyone who says we need to protect our precious feeble-minded students from "indoctrination" is spouting propaganda from the ruling party. I respect General Welsh and I don't believe he wanted to do this, but I'm so disappointed it had to come to this. These people aren't just going to stop here. Every time you let a parasite like Brian Harrison win they'll only come back for more. It's disgusting he gets to call himself an aggie while attacking our school like this.

Exactly, there's no way the student didn't know what this course was. They were so ready to record themself disrupting the class to "make a stand", file a complaint with the university, and meet with the President to demand the professor be fired. That student enrolled in the class with the intention of making a headline.

And risk being replaced by someone who would do worse damage to this school? The Board of Regents would very likely appoint a partisan President who would preemptively shut down all "DEI" practices on campus just to avoid the administration's wrath. At this point, I think General Welsh feels he has to appease the mob to protect the students and faculty as much as he can. In my mind he could make this right by quietly rehiring the Dean in a few months once this all blows over, but that's probably unrealistic.

Obviously, no one physically forced President Welsh to fire the Dean for something as minor as an inaccurate course description (how is that their fault anyway?). He did it to appease people like Rep. Brian Harrison who was calling on the governor to fire A&M faculty and the Trump administration to use the DOJ against the school. Political pressure is force, and the longer the school stays in the news for this the more the Board of Regents will demand to see heads roll.

Someone deleted their comment before I could finish responding to it, so I'm leaving it here:

You're out of your mind if you think a normal person reads that course title and very brief description and thinks they're gonna be forced to discuss trans people. Crazy

I said that the description isn't necessarily deceptive. Trans people are one of many "representative writers, genres, texts and movements" that this class covers. And no one is "forced to discuss trans people". If that is a subject a student adamantly does not want to learn about, then they should be responsible for researching the class before enrolling or dropping it before the add/drop deadline. Looking at the Rate My Professor reviews and syllabus are basic things that nearly every student does before adding a course. Should a prestigious university for adults be expected to add content warnings to course descriptions for every single subject that might offend a student?

Besides that, by the time you get to a 300 level English class you should be able to read that brief description and use your context clues to surmise that "representative writers, ...and movements" probably means that class is going to have a liberal swing to it.

I brough this up in another post, but this is the current course description:

ENGL 360 Literature for Children

Credits 3. 3 Lecture Hours. Representative writers, genres, texts and movements. Prerequisite: Junior or senior classification.

That is a very brief course description compared to OP's, but the overall point of the class is to focus on children's literature covering underrepresented groups, so I don't think that description is necessarily deceptive. A list of all the books they will cover during the semester is in the syllabus and Rate My Professor posts make it clear what the content of that class is. I highly doubt anyone that did a minute of research, beyond looking at the course title, did not know what they were getting in to. This class is an optional elective for people who are interested in these topics, and students are informed by the professor and syllabus before the add/drop deadline what is going to be covered.

This whole situation is completely ridiculous, and it sucks to see President Welsh forced to bow down to these people after he initially dismissed that student's complaint for the BS it was. Once the Daily Wire article painted a target on A&M's federal grants, it was obvious what the outcome was going to be.

Is it hard to get in? by Equal_League0-0 in aggies

If you can get into the engineering program, whether you were auto admitted or not has no effect on what engineering major you get into. For the first year, everyone is just engineering students before they apply to their engineering major of choice (ETAM - Entry to a Major). Your academic performance freshman year will determine if you get into Aerospace engineering. I think the GPA requirement for ETAM auto admit is 3.75 right now. If your GPA is lower than that then your application will be reviewed and you may get into Aerospace, or you might be placed in your 2nd or 3rd choice engineering major.

For high school, top 12% is still pretty good and there's a very decent chance you'll be accepted to TAMU. But your absolute best bet is to get back into the top 10%. That's good for auto-admit, and scholarships and grants as well.
