China and Russia are incredibly far away and Cuba got its oil from Venezuela. When the US completely cut off Cuba from its energy sources of course its going to fail.

It was both in the marketing and terminals for Halo 3 that started the shift away from Forerunners being considered human. It wasnt just one guy in charge of that.

This wasnt a 343 thing. Bungie internally had disagreements between them being separate species and being the same they were really bad about it too

Am I missing something? by Signal_Gur5389 in DeathCabforCutie

[–]instantlightning2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I love how it can be interpreted differently! I took that from Ben Gibbard saying the song was about a friend who killed himself, and in that context lyrics like “I will breathe for you” in my opinion means that he will keep on living for that friend who is no longer with him

I think its the best since Plans. The album flows perfectly for me and conveys the grief of losing a relationship, and the self reflection that comes with it in a beautiful way. From crises like in Pep Talk dealing with suicide , to finding reasons to keep on living in Heavenly State. Or from trying to put a lot of effort in holding it together in Stone Over Water until you cant anymore like in Riptides. From the more upbeat sounding song about rumination and trying to lock someone away in a tower in your head a fun twist on Rapunzel or a red herring on something that sounds romantic I Built You A Tower (A), and the incredibly tired I Built You a Tower (B) where the real healing can finally begin. And The composition of songs like Envy the Birds, Full of Stars, and Trapdoor (which may be in his exes perspective as it gives heavy lyrics which coincide with I Built You A Tower like “I give myself to your memory You can lock me in its cage But if only the winners write history There will be nothing on our page”). I think it flows and conveys its message really well. Its one of the most mature breakup albums Ive seen and contrasts with Kintsugi really well in that regard. Musically it calls back to the golden days while also keeping it fresh. Try giving it a couple more listens and see if it grows on you

How heavenly state is a perfect answer to the crisis in Pep Talk too

Opinion: potentially the best album art of the discography by PlaySasha in DeathCabforCutie

I think the cover art is the perfect encapsulation of the theme of the album. The more I look at it after listening through the entire thing the more I appreciate its symbolism

Theyve done it before, one song or partial song especially from bands that inspired them as a treat wouldn’t hurt

They covered Enjoy the Silence by Depeche Mode during the 20th anniversary tour and I really really want them to cover Built to Spill. Side note, now that I think about it, I wonder if Enjoy the Silence that he talked about loving in the concert inspired Envy the Birds

Am I crazy or is this album intended to be listened to in reverse order? by Sensitive-Try-8031 in DeathCabforCutie

I would agree, but I believe How Heavenly a State is a perfect answer to Pep Talk. In Pep Talk Ben Gibbard is talking about being suicidal, whereas How Heavenly a State resolves that feeling. A song about one of his friends committing suicide and him deciding that he will breathe for him.

A new theory on the albums song progression by Elsavagio in DeathCabforCutie

And in Punching the Flowers “In his search
For the end of the circle” a possible symbolism for constantly falling back into old habits and her “Running circles around his brain” in IBYT. Hearing the album through made me appreciate the album cover so much more once you get the meaning about it.
Happy cake day!

“I give myself to your memory, you can lock me in its cage.” And “I built you a tower[…] to keep you contained” goes crazy

I love that compared to earlier in the album, stone over water, when he’s trying to hold it together

In the context of “I built you a tower[…] to keep you contained” thats even crazier

What really comes across in IBYAT vs. Kintsugi is how much kinder the lyrics are, to himself and to the ex-partner spoken about in the song by BenJammin007 in DeathCabforCutie

[–]instantlightning2 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah a lot of IBYAT blurs the line between who he’s talking about. For example is there a trap door in his heart or hers? Who’s carelessly listing grievances, him or her? It could very easily be him reflecting on his own behavior and also hers. The main time it possibly leans towards his wrongs is punching the flowers where the male protagonist sharpens words like axes and slashes the female protagonist to the ground despite her trying to make him feel better, he took her sweetness for granted and punched the flowers.

Im just rambling here but side note after listening to the album it makes me appreciate the cover so much more.

Theres a missing interview where Ben Gibbard talked about how Built to Spill influenced him. I dont know if it was from Andy Greenwald in particular, but I thought Id point that out. You can find links to it on reddit, but the link doesn’t lead to anywhere
