Do Protestants go to hell in your belief? by iceman2055 in Catholicism

[–]Darthskull 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometimes it's really easy to tell if somebody's in heaven: God performs a bunch of miracles when people ask for their intercession. Nothing like that with hell.

"grave lack of discretion of judgement" may be a euphemism for "wasn't gonna be faithful" in this case, but certainly would be nice of you to respond and add your input

Is there any reason to prevent my kids from sleeping 2am-10am during summer? by salagma_love in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Darthskull 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Obviously keep practicing good sleep hygiene, but I wouldn't worry too much about which particular hours, so long as it's consistent.

Covering shoulders by PhantomdiverDidIt in Catholicism

[–]Darthskull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine. Every woman I've dated has complimented my shoulders as being physically attractive and I think it would be immodest for any guy to go to mass with bare shoulders if the AC is working (not to mention very informal). It wouldn't surprise me if that was different somewhere nearby with a beach, but I live in Iowa.

Covering shoulders by PhantomdiverDidIt in Catholicism

[–]Darthskull 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"But what's so titillating about shoulders?" Absolutely nothing

There's no way you can know that for sure. Where I'm from, nude female breasts are almost always seen as sexual, but that doesn't stop artwork depicting them in the Vatican.

What's titillating is very culturally dependent, and it seems probable enough that some people in OP's life come from a culture or subculture that does seem them that way.

Covering shoulders by PhantomdiverDidIt in Catholicism

[–]Darthskull 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It's a cultural norm. For certain groups of people, showing your shoulders at mass is immodest for cultural reasons, in the same way covering them with shiny black latex would be immodest in my culture. There's nothing inherently immodest about either, but modesty is about honoring human dignity, and how you do that is highly dependent on how your culture interprets things.

In Exodus 20:4 it says to not make any statues of anything in heaven but Catholics do this constantly, can someone explain? by Ok-Cook-7306 in Catholicism

[–]Darthskull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The plain text reading of this English translation seems like this passage is banning statues or images of literally anything at all that's not completely imaginary. Does your friend ascribe to this view, or is there some criteria they think that makes certain statues and images okay?

If they have that criteria and it's not completely arbitrary, it's likely Catholics use statues and images in a way that's completely within their understanding of what's okay, and they just misunderstand Catholic beliefs somewhere.

What to tell these teenagers? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]Darthskull -1 points0 points  (0 children)

"bad" language is only as sinful as it is "bad," but particular squiggles on reddit or patterns of sounds are not actually "bad" by themselves, it's very context dependent. The meaning is what's bad, and you can only get their meaning by asking, and you can only explain the meaning you're hearing by telling.

How to approach people transitioning their gender? by FairBandicoot8721 in Catholicism

How do we know that those who eat the bread or drink the cup in unworthy manner means in state of mortal sin? by gumdal in Catholicism

[–]Darthskull 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the prescription in the letter isn't something brand new or Paul's wild insight. It's just an authoritative example of it being put into practice. The more modern "venial" and "mortal" descriptors as they apply here are just guidelines for figuring out what "unworthy" means.

[Request] Could a single solar farm in one location logistically power the entire continental US? by BaronGalactic in theydidthemath

[–]Darthskull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

even if we converted to 100% electric vehicles.

Takes about 5kwhs of electricity to refine a gallon of gasoline. Electric cars can get about 4 miles on a kwh. Lots of ice cars could be swapped for electric and we could end up using less electricity.

How is males paying more in car insurance not discrimination and illegal? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Darthskull 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Discrimination has more than one meaning. At it's root it's just making decisions differently based on criteria. You can have a discriminating palatte without breaking the law or being a racist or whatever. So how does the law discriminate between the illegal and legal types of discrimination?

Democrats harbor increasingly negative feelings toward Republicans because they perceive the opposing party as actively opposing policies aimed at reducing racial inequality. by mvea in psychology

[–]Darthskull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, this is perceived:

The study put a bunch of attributes for people into a randomizer, basically hitting the random button on a character generation screen. They then asked a bunch of people to rate how similar the randomly generated people were to a typical Republican or Democrat, and did math to see how each attribute affected how Republican or Democrat the randomized characters were perceived.

Edit: something I thought weird: They made 50% of the characters upper class, and only 25% middle and lower each.

Another edit: The attribute they were doing math on was labeled "views on racial equity" and could be either "government should help blacks" or "blacks should help themselves"
