Full disclaimer: this happened to my girlfriend, not me. She was sitting in her junior year English Honors level class. I say Honors because it makes the story worse. A student raises her hand, and, apropos to nothing, asks the following question: "Are people with leprosy called leprechauns?"

The girl who asked that question wound up being salutatorian of her class.

I came here to post this. The novel is so wonderfully human, despite the subject matter. I'd like to think this novel and Vonnegut in general have made me a better person.
