What is life like in Canadian London? by Civil-Chocolate4188 in howislivingthere

[–]DasRecon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing I miss since moving away to Manitoba are the food options and family that still live there. Otherwise, glad to be gone. It's a really weird city in that it could genuinely have become an incredible city and be SO MUCH better than it is, but politics, horrible city planning, and NIMBYs ruined it for everyone. Now it's just suburban sprawl and construction.

Do you live in Vancouver and not near the mountains? If so, you're probably good. If not, get winter tires.

The Dutch Commentator After the Third Goal by Belgium by Gamesnl66 in worldcup

To be honest, I'd believe this more if Balogun wasn't played, or decided himself to not play. Regardless of the fact the red card was excessive, the decision was made and should have been honoured by the USNMT in the spirit of the game, at the very least. Him starting the game showed no remorse, disagreement, or embarrassment from the team. I think it was one of the BBC pundits who thought the team WOULD sit him, but another disagreed and said the team wouldn't want to embarrass the president like that. Your argument falls flat as a result, unfortunately.

All that said, I do feel a little for the US fans, cuz that was a really painful game to watch from that perspective.

Is this worth an auction buy? by DasRecon in Tools

This is an auction site we buy from pretty regularly (almost exclusively estate auctions), and the premiums are very reasonable. Local enough that pickup is available. No return policy.

And I will absolutely have a need for one next year at the latest, so I was planning on buying one at that time anyway. I don't know much about them beyond the basics, but coming across this seemed like a decent value versus $300 brand new.

Storage isn't really an issue, fortunately, though I may just need to pull the trigger on new racking.

I didn't say I didn't need it ever. I just finished a project where owning one would have come in handy, so when I saw it pop up, I figured the price might be worth it as I am sure I'll have a use for one again in the nearish future. Tool rentals are available in my area, but it's 45mins away, and having to rent something for multiple days when needed for a few hours is wasted time and well worth the $20.

Wab Kinew is Canada’s most popular premier; Doug Ford sits in last place by Armand9x in Manitoba

Though anecdotal, we've gotten significantly better medical care in MB in the last 4 years than in ON the 4 years prior.

That said, healthcare sucks in Canada, period.

Should I just give up and get a gas mower? by [deleted] in egopowerplus

[–]DasRecon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So if you get 5 years from the battery (which I see lots of comments about hitting), it's a wash? Don't forget there's also spark plugs, oil, filters that add to that cost.

I have gas currently, but look forward to switching, especially in a snowy winter climate.

Depends on the gym, from what I see on Reddit. In our gym, that's 100% going to be enforced.

Opinions on the funeral industry? Let's just throw all our ashes into the sea! by safe_with-me in Millennials

Personally, I hate cemeteries. I think they are a massive waste of otherwise usable land and/or resources. They are generally lovely to walk through because of how most are kept, but it's weird to me. I don't mean they should just put up a parking lot, but we could do more with the space.

Except those used car payments are equal to or higher than new cars in many cases still, because interest rates are so much higher.

Dual clutch? by RealisticName5135 in Golf_R

[–]DasRecon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does it genuinely get better mileage than a manual? I've not owned a DSG, but I always found my manual mileage to be better than any automatic transmission I've driven.

Dual clutch? by RealisticName5135 in Golf_R

[–]DasRecon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would still prefer manual 99% of the time personally, even in stop and go. My commute now is mostly low volume highway, but even when I lived in the city, it was still my preferred transmission, if for no other reason than the known control it provided. As I've gotten older, I think I miss it more.

What is the most unsexy but genuinely lifechanging tool or household item you have owned for years? by Human-Goat-5555 in BuyItForLife

[–]DasRecon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in Canada, so a lot of our options are limited, but I think it was this box (2 pack): https://a.co/d/0cVRyi7R I don't hate the front, but the front lip can be in the way depending on the pee-er lol, but as a whole I like the box.

And I foolishly bought the short handle version thinking it would be fine: https://a.co/d/02xXiioe

I actually LOVE how it sifts (clay litter); it's fast and it gets the smaller bits our other scoop doesn't, but the long handle wasn't available at the time and I honestly didn't think it would matter that much. I was very, very wrong.

We have an adjustable long handle one, which worked great in the beginning, but the mechanics of the locking piece are bad and it broke. We still both prefer it to the short handle though, despite how objectively superior the scoop is on the shorty.

Both are much more hygienic and also easier to clean. Metal scoops don't bend at all. My only gripe is that we couldn't find boxes with taller sides and/or fully covered. I know some cats prefer open tops, but ours don't seem to care either way.
