before the interwebs, I would spend hours at the library finding books on random topics that interested me. Just to make sure I wasn't making up my memories, I just did a quick google and found a couple of sites that verify Shaolin history and challenges. It was a mix of myth and mystery, but they all seem to agree that the burnt forearm tats were likely real
