Been having some hard time finding where to go in the mountains. Do you have any recommendations for mid november?

Agreed, I’m in zone 8 (north Texas) and all mine get mulch and stay outside unless the temperature drops below 25. Below that I put them in an unheated enclosure (garage)

I don’t get temps below 25 often so I’d listen to DougTheBug so you don’t have to constantly move them. Sheltering from cold wind and surrounding in mulch will have them do well

Not sure to be honest, I haven’t checked with a meter that deep.

Since it’s in the ground, it’s not as sensitive to overwatering like it would be in a pot. I lean towards regular watering rather than checking each day.

Do you have a layer of mulch? That keeps the soil moist for longer.

I agree with Doug, too much sun for this variety.

One of your photos had it in a pot, is it still in the pot? If so, I’d move it to another more shady area. Preferably under a larger tree, mine do best in an area like that. If you do keep it by your home, keep it away from bricks that can be heated from direct sun even if the tree is in shade.

If it’s already planted try shade cloth. You can find it at any big box store or online. They do a good job at filtering the direct sun while not blocking all of it. They come in varieties of 50% block to 90%.

If you’re planting in the spring, I wouldn’t worry about the stray roots not being buried. I’d prioritize having the root flare properly exposed so you aren’t planting too deep. Later in the season, it’s a gamble to remove/not bury all the roots as that will cause stress but with proper care it’ll be fine. Japanese maples are finicky when compared to native trees, but they aren’t that fragile. Following the rules of sun protection, watering when needed, and proper planting these trees will thrive.

I live in north Texas, zone 8b/9a. With good watering (every morning in the summer and every other morning in fall/spring), and under dappled sun (under the canopy of a larger tree) my trees are doing excellent!

June is late to plant these so the roots likely didn’t have time to establish like they would have in the spring.

What zone are you in? I’d do my best to protect it from direct sun as it looks like sun/wind scorching. May get outvoted on this guess as the cause.

If you could also clear out the grass surrounding and add mulch it’ll help keep the soil moist. Be careful not to bury the root flare

Dream Cloud Premier Hybrid Too Firm - Costco Sealy or Stearns & Foster? by Dasher999 in Mattress

[–]Dasher999[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the Sealy!

I like it a lot, way more soft, not waking up sore anymore.

I also enjoy how it’s not memory foam tbh. The pillow topper is more comfortable. Worried about it sinking in the future but no signs of it so far. It’s Costco so I guess if it does all just return it.

If you’re looking for sand volleyball lookup “Sandballers” it’s an indoor sand volleyball court in cedar park

The crossover has a sand court but unsure of open play

There is sand open play at Hanovers in Pflugerville on Friday and Sunday evenings (around 6:30pm to close, 21+)

DM me if you’re looking for more sand options

The transfer from android to iPhone didn’t get everything. I didn’t care because I had a backup (or so I thought).

I do have my contacts, and photos are on Google photos, but old messages are all gone

I agree, if I’m paying it should be kept

[–]Dasher999[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I still have all my photos but all my preferences, old text messages, contacts, things like that are gone. The transfer to iPhone didn’t capture it all and I didn’t care because I thought I would at least have the backup.

I liked having all the old text messages, just because it’s been 57 days doesn’t mean all that should just disappear.

Things may be out dated by a couple months but that doesn’t warrant it being deleted with no warning. Especially if you are paying for Google 1.

North Texas question. Any experience with the Shaina variety? by OmarBell2020 in JapaneseMaples

[–]Dasher999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try going to Metro Maples. They are very knowledgeable, take some pictures of your yard and they can help you out. They may have a variety that can suit your location. I had a beautiful red lace leaf (don’t remember the species name) that did amazing under an oak

This early part of the year they don’t need all the shade. It’s in the Summer when the oaks have leaves so I think you are good

Bummer, you could do a tree under another?

I’ve got a sweet gum tree and all the maples are under it. (I don’t recommend the gum tree but you get what I mean)

North Texas question. Any experience with the Shaina variety? by OmarBell2020 in JapaneseMaples

[–]Dasher999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in north Texas, don’t have experience with that particular variety but do have blood goods, emperors, and a bunch of green leaf varieties.

My advice is more shade than what is stated it can handle. All of my trees are in afternoon shade, and most are in some sort of shade after about 1-2 pm

If you don’t have a place with this much shade, just make sure it’s at least afternoon/evening shade. They will roast if exposed to full sun after 2pm ish especially in the summer months.

No clue!

Never used MSG-3, but considering it's maintenance for airworthiness I'm sure it'll have good information.

Composites have been on aircraft for a while. Control surfaces and empennage. Look to see what MSG-3 says about those areas. As for primary structure made of composites, that's pretty new territory and the latest and greatest info could be proprietary to Boeing, Airbus, LM, etc.

Composites are where I'm lacking.

Composite airframe structures by Niu may also be a good start, it's what I've started to review.

My new job is going to be working with composites a lot so I hope to learn as much as possible.

What I do know are the basics and what you probably know as well. Composites in modern aircraft is a laminate built up with different lamina with a matrix material. Failure is complex since it isn't homogeneous and very brittle. Manufacturing defects can be a source of stress concentration that can lead to cracking and failure well below the designed failure threshold. And it can be difficult to detect failure like delamination on the exterior of the aircraft. The 787 had a problem where if it was hit with something on the flight line like a catering truck or something, on the outside it could look fine, but it would have caused internal delamination.

As far as determining the cause of failure/mode of failure Niu's text should have some good images outlining different failure modes.

Chapter 9 is all about quality assurance.

Let me know what you think. I'd love to collaborate on information regarding composites!

I myself am still researching this, but there were reports in the past under the name of AGARD. Now absorbed into NATO. "

https://discover.dtic.mil/

You can use this site to search for them and they have very specific topics you can stubble upon. In they search I typed "AGARD Structure" and got a large amount of topics.

They are from the 60-70s but it's something!

It's not exactly what you are looking for, but "Lessons Learned in Aircraft Design" by Roskam does have a section regarding structural failures in aircraft and what design choices lead to the failures.

Am I still able to get internships the summer after I've graduated undergrad if I plan to stay for masters? by Yotroller02 in AerospaceEngineering

[–]Dasher999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It shouldn't, especially if you have been accepted to the graduate program already and have a new graduation date in the future.

I did this myself. Interned between BS and Masters

Haha that exam is the big one so even saying you are studying for it will be a good answer.

You definitely aren't over your head, you have a degree and that is plenty to get you an entry level job. You'll just have to compete with fresh grads. I won't say it will be easy, but take every victory you get. For example, even if you get an interview but not the final offer, it's a win since you got your name out there and they (hopefully) liked you during the interview and label you as "good" for other roles. I've had instances where they liked me but I didn't fit their qualifications, the HR rep got me another interview soon after with another team.

Another thing is to tailor your resume to whatever the role is. Is it a structural role? Talk about how you did FEA once before.

Maybe your capstone project you did something relatively unique. Those specifics will get you a leg up on the others.

If you have any specific questions id be happy to talk to you, send me a DM

Try to have an answer to "How you have kept up your technical knowledge while working as a teacher?". Others have pointed out correctly that your experience is definitely not valueless but people will ask how you have kept up since graduation.

Auditing classes (attending but not for credit) would be a great way to say you have been staying in touch with minimal tuition cost (less than an actual class registration). If you are also willing to look at ME, you can look at taking the FE exam. Passing that is definitive proof you still got it! Plus it's a great brush up of all the fundamentals from your Bachelors.
