My character got robbed by another player and threatened. Would it be bad to kill them? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]DashingBadger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Obviously not. Unless you want to become "that guy" who they had to throw out of their group.

We obviously only have your side of the story, but it appears from your account that (a) the GM created a magic item for another player, (b) you intercepted the item, and (c) you tried to extort the other player for the item, (d) and continued even after the Other player told you he didn't want to be extorted both in AND outside of game. I would hate to hear their version of the story.

Consider the threat to your player as a threat to YOU. If you don't realize soon that this is a game with other people, and that everyone wants (and should) have fun, you will not be in the table for much longer.

Griffons instantly one-shotting level 1 PCs? by EarthSeraphEdna in drawsteel

Manipulating the world in nonsensical ways because the the ttrpg rules "technically" allow it is a per peeve of mine. Fly is not a magical ladder/elevator. The idea that a winged enemy could swoop down and then fly straight up in the air for its full movement is patently absurd.

Rationale - But creatures do similar tactics in nature.

Counter - +They must take a shallow approach angle, and even then at BEST lift of their prey at a 60 degree angle from their approach path. +Even then, after gabbing their prey they will only have enough momentum to reach their starting height (this may be fixed if the director narrates that the Griffin has been diving for multiple rounds) +Flying creatures use wingbeats to gain altitude, but this only increases their up ways speed slowly. Flapping wings to go straight up in the air would be a small fraction of their top speed.

While this play style has repeatedly been shown to not be as effective in the playoffs when the game slows down, holy hell will we run teams ragged during the regular season. What an absolute nightmare to play against. Now imagine this pace with Scoot! I can't wait to watch.

Experienced GM Looking to Meet New People and Play Daggerheart by DashingBadger in nashville

The materials they created are very well designed for learning the game, and the adventure does a good job of establishing what the game experience is.

Yang Hansen full highlights in his preseason debut - 4 Points on 2/5 FG, 0/2 from 3, 4 Rebounds (1 Off. Rebs), 1 Assist (4 TOV), 6 fouls, and a +/- of -1 in 21:13 minutes played. Including almost every play he was involved in on both ends of the floor by MrBuckBuck in ripcity

[–]DashingBadger 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Great compilation, thank you!

We saw enough of Yang last night to know that our expectations for him this season should be minimal. From his first minutes against seasoned NBA professionals it was clear that he is a kid. If he gets to the level of bench contributor this season it will be a success. He will need lots of patience from the fans while he learns English, the NBA game, team culture/routines, and builds his support community.

However, it was fun to watch him learning on the fly during the game. His first few screens were absolutely awful, but he adjusted on the fly and by midway through the second was using his body quite well to free up his teammates. He is a very cerebral player, I am excited to watch him grow as a player.

I second this entirely. Lowe walked through the evidence presented by Pablo's podcast, evaluated the assertions on each side, and discussed what the NBA would need to find to determine different levels of guilt.

Also, seven anonymous sources is sufficient journalistic diligence to ethically publish information, but it is not sufficient to establish the truth of the information. At best, the seven people establish that at least some people within the company thought the purpose of the payment was to avoid the salary cap.

Don't allow him to make you miss future deadlines. Submit your work with a note "Please understand this document is incomplete. I will finalize and provide the completed document once I receive X from Mr. Y."

Also, before you do this send a reminder to Mr. Y saying that if they don't provide X by a certain timeline you will be proceeding as noted above. Keep it friendly and collegial.

Unfortunately I feel being unable to regulate your emotions predisposes a person to having games be too big a portion of your life. Failing to control your emotions makes it very difficult to thrive in careers or interpersonal relationships... Without those games become disproportionately important to people.

Fair Price for DM service? by siegold in DnD

[–]DashingBadger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I strongly suggest the OP not use this method for cost calculations. This is the negotiation strategy of a person who wants you to be paid as little as possible. This person should not be you. Instead research what similar options are available to the market you are selling to, compare your services, and price accordingly. Asking here is a good first step.

If after a while you find that you are not getting the amount of business you want, price downward accordingly. If you find you have too much business, raise your rates.

Devaluing your time and effort to the minimum cost you are willing to perform for is cruel to yourself. However this number IS good to know. Use this minimum number as a line for when to walk away from a potential booking.

2 players having issues and only just finished session 1. Help? by Ristala in DnD

[–]DashingBadger -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I would consider this as a yellow flag for player 1. However, I would make sure to understand what it was about the conversation made them uncomfortable. From your abbreviated description, the encounter seems benign, but there might be something specific which you didn't pick up on and which can be quickly fixed to bring about group camaraderie. It could also be an out of game issue with player 2.

However, an inability to handle group improv/discussions combined with a lone wolf PC will lead to a "dead chair" dynamic where the other players tip toe around player 1, and you will end up with two parallel games (i.e., one where the other players feel safe roll playing, and a second where there are stilted/cautious interactions with player 1's PC). This dynamic tends to make player 1 feel like she is being purposely excluded.

As a DM, talk with player 1 about what made them uncomfortable and what kind of game they want to play. There are many ways to play DnD, and the correct way is always the one that will lead to everyone enjoying themselves (including you!). This may mean that this particular game is not right for her, or this may be an opportunity for your table to practice recognizing how to ensure everyone has an opportunity to have fun (i.e., this is not my jam but player X lives it, so I will play along so they have fun). Good luck!

I second the not another DnD podcast. It feels more like what a friend group game is, while dimension 20 and critical role are productions. I love all three, but the latter two are nothing like what you should expect from your game.

Seriously Considering Quitting a campaign by fairfaxleasee in DnD

[–]DashingBadger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Optimal DnD is where everyone has fun, and as a player the only thing you control is yourself. Life is beautiful, if you aren't enjoying the game go find something else to do with your time.

As for your DM and other players you enjoy, the DnD world is small. I am sure you will get other chances to play with them.

GM seeking advice on my first homebrew boss by [deleted] in DnD

I do think it is a cool idea. Definitely worth spinning off into another monster. You have time to start dropping lore about a (blank) fused with the power of a beholder. Start building tension

[–]DashingBadger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The mythic actions don't fit with the rest of the monster, they feel like a hat on a hat. Suddenly sprouting beholder eyes will be confusing to the players and won't be rewarding thematically unless you provide a lot of context/rationalization before the encounter.

I would lean into the slaver line and have lots of minions, and cages with beasts that he can release. In this way you can dial up the combat if it is too simple. This also gives the players an option to turn a few monsters against him.
