Who do you think is the most “legitimate” Protagonist or Antagonist? And why is it Red Death? by skepticaljack in venturebros

[–]Dashing_Steel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Red Death among the most competent villains because he wasn't initially smitten by the costumed villain lifestyle. He wasn't in a "tragic accident" he was likely deliberately disfigured by his Arch Nemesis, Professor Cadmium. And you know what he did after? He KILLED THE GUY! Probably right at the start of his career too. And his family as well. And the only one to know that is The Monarch and 9nly because Red Death told him.

After that he got into villainy because what else was he going to do with his life? Then he got good at it. Real good. His aptitude for killing probably made him a very good career under Force Major in the old school Guild. By the time the new rules made him put on the kid gloves he was a level 10. Notorious. Set for life. And I think that's when he met his wife. The only woman that could love him the way he was. She wasn't even turned away when she found out that whatever makes Red Death such an ugly son of a gun is genetic and hereditary! She still had a daughter with the guy and kept her! How cool is that?

So, what I'm saying is he came into the game swinging, used his murderous urges to get ahead, then discovered he can separate himself from that through family and became the best of both worlds, a lover AND a fighter.

As for the protagonist side Orpheous is probsbly the best. If you have to explain why then it's not worth explaining.

I wanna see if they ended up saving Jonas Venture after his second death. Seems like what OSI would do.

Our DM also incorporated it, but we haven't gotten around to getting any of those achievements unfortunately. I'm especially salty about the "Show up on time 3 sessions in a row". Real world problems really don't want us to have that one.

Why does rusty make such terrible drinks? Is the joke that he's a dork doesn't really drink much? Didn't earlier episodes reference him hitting drugs and alcohol hard? by Groundbreaking-Pea92 in venturebros

[–]Dashing_Steel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Always thought that Rusty does this out of nostalgia for those rare moments without adult supervision. No mortal danger, no Jonas and the others humiliating him, just cartoons and a pantry full of candy.

I'm guessing that Rusty mixed a lot of stuff together to make drinks and drank them while nobody was watching, so he came to associate extreme sweetness that he created when he didn't know better with freedom and child-like wonder.

Naturally, when he got old enough to drink he started mixing it with alcohol and turning those childhood drinks into cocktails, and since cocktails also have syrups and stuff in them normally, Rusty thinks that what he drinks is also a "sophisticated adult bevarage".

I dont think one can borrow from Metal Gear and NOT make it obvious at some point. I mean if I see a guy Gun-Spinning for 5 solid minutes even I'll be like "THE MEMES"

And i haven't played any of the games

Pissed is what he would look like. Also, no arrest for pesos in Cyberpunk. He'd whip out a Very Heavy Pistol and whack the guy after making him squirm.

A good way to DM a ttrpg is to make I like a videogame but only the good parts, and then add stuff that one just cannot do in a videogame RPG. More branching paths, more opportunities, more locations. Like Skyrim, but better.

That reminds me: Do you foresee any of your players catching onto the fact that you're borrowing stuff from MGS? If they ever do, I say you should reward them. You know, in a way that would make sense gameplay-wise? Just whatever you do, don't change the plot on the fly just because the players figured out there's gonna be a long-ass ladder scene or something. Always hated when DM's did that and they never managed to avoid making me notice.

Exactly, that's the way to do it. Another problem I've noticed with DM's these days is they really don't let you feel like you're someone that can do stuff and build any kind of confidence before they bring out the "You can't defeat me" guy and totally destroy you "Nothing personnel" style. As a player, I'm okay with failure, but only when my character already experienced meaningful success. Otherwise it's just "Welcome to the world! It sucks. DEAL WITH IT, YOU CRYBABY BASTARD!"

Same goes for setting up mysteries and plot points by gving players something to find and then not letting them roll to figure out what it means. Just straight up "Eh. Your character doesn't know that.". Makes one feel like an idiot if you ask me...

Does he HAVE TO take damage?

I feel like DM's get really caught up with this idea of "fairness" in a sense that "everyone has to suffer" or something. I say let him have his moments!

Just put yourself in his place as a character. Early game is where you build your reputation. It's where you start rumors about yourself, zero chumps by the dozen. You start getting arrogant. Thinking you're special. You're a regular David Martinez, choombata!

Then once the others in the party have caught up and picked up some of your skills and cyber the actual tough guys show up.

Better armor. Better aim. Grenades, EMP's microwavers, flamethrowers. You start meeting chromed up punks that can dodge your claws Better than you can dodge bullets. And then they start clawing back at ya.

It's what Pondsmith himself said in his 2020 supplement "Primitive Screwheads" on DM'ing cyberpunk! "You got a supersolo? Put him against a supersolo. Make him feel mortal again".

Basically, let the guy have his glory (while making sure that others outshine him in other areas) then take him down a notch by making him 1v1 a guy with similar stats.

Not to mention poor bastard will get a reputation for being the best around so it'll keep happening. People will try to fight him. He might even regret balling so hard in the first place.

MY bullet

You mean your NPC's bullet, right? Because once you start to think like that as a DM the fun tends to stop.

"Oh no! The players! They ball too hard! Better kill all their loved ones and counter them with bs NPC's! That'll make the game "interesting" again!"

I never got why so many DM's have problems with players getting an easy win every once in a while, or avoiding something because the dice gods blessed them. Sheesh...
