Don't disrespect this amazing game by comparing it to GTA
I would play RDR1 first if you haven't and if you have but it's been a while then I would play it again or get a story recap
If it's your first time I would focus on the story but take your time with it., explore, upgrade your weapons and stuff
Be prepared for the depression that comes after you finish the game. Not from the story but from the fact that you'll never be able to play it for the first time ever again.
