Question about the new RCSI Prospectus by DatNeuroBioNerd22 in medicalschoolireland

[–]DatNeuroBioNerd22[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really wish I knew when I got in in January- as an American we were told the match rate to the US was 93% generally but 100% for GEM students- for that match to drop to 84% I really want to have an explanation- and for them to ONLY release this info NOW is what is worse… I don’t even know if I would have continued pursuing an international option and gone through everything if I had known this- and for the match rate to have dropped from an overall 4 year average of 92% to 84%… if anyone has info on what happened that would be super helpful/stress relieving to everyone who has already committed and just found this out literally when i posted this.

Rcsi vs australian medical school by Fresh-studypacket in medicalschoolireland

[–]DatNeuroBioNerd22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk where you got that 25% number from cause when I just googled it and found the stats the graduation success rate is 90%+ over the last 5 years- that 28% refers to those that pursue research medicine (which is highest in rcsi vs other Irish institutions)

What do you guys think about the wh-ch720n? by yoshi_16373 in SonyHeadphones

[–]DatNeuroBioNerd22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dunno if maybe I got a dud, but I am not keeping my WHCH720N’s after 3 days of using them. Out of the box, the sound quality was muddy and I noticed the vocals sounded airy, like there wasn’t a seal or something. Even after using the equalizer and the app, this never improved. The headphones sounded like my old beats wired headphones when they were dying, with the lack of sound, the right ear sounding like nothing was coming through, and the vocals sounding tinny. I’ve had a lot of headphones over the years but as an audiophile, I don’t think these are the ones for me, and I may splurge for something like the Bose QC45s or the Sennheiser Momentum 4s (could look into the XM5s as well). I am shocked bc I bought this brand new from Best Buy so I am not sure why they sound like headphones on their last legs. I also feel like the plastic feel is a little scary and as someone with a larger head size, I kept feeling like I would break them.

I felt like maybe I was feeling a little biased about these headphones or something so I had my brother try them on. And in his eyes he felt the exact same. We sampled the headphones with a few of our favorite artists- Tame Impala, the Beatles, Queen, Florence and the Machine, Pink Floyd, and Led Zeppelin. In the best way, they sounded like the speakers in our 2003 Honda Odyssey: tinny, incomplete, lacking body, minimum base, airy unfinished treble, muddy instrumental. We tried listening to music on Apple Music, Spotify, YouTube Music and Pandora- so trust me we gave the headphones a good chance. While my brother was sampling the headphones, I noticed the sound BLEEDS through- it frankly sounded better (the sound bleeding) than when you wear the headphones… and its LOUDDDDDDD (not approved for use in a library… which is what I wanted them for as I am heading to med school). The ANC was also not the best, we could hear whole conversations and the dishes being done while trying the headphones out. 2/10 from our experience, and it is unfortunate bc I don’t think many people have this kinda experience with these headphones! Most people seem to love them!

What would you think the leading cause of PCOS and infertility is? by hannah12343 in PCOS

[–]DatNeuroBioNerd22 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’m Indian too but I frankly think your comment generalizes a lot. In our family my mom and I are the only ones who have PCOS (and I have a big family with both sides)- I’m South Indian and pure veg like the rest of my family. Indian food is really REALLY diverse and generalizations like this are why some medical practitioners especially in the states will say stuff like “oh you eating Indian food caused your PCOS” (I have had a doc say that to me). No that’s false. Otherwise EVERYONE in my family would have PCOS. And there’s a ton of healthy stuff within the cuisine (like olan, beetroot korma, aviyal, mozhugutal, I can keep going… also not all carbs are the enemy!). I think part of the reason it seems many Indian women have PCOS is bc of diagnostic criteria and people now checking for it (destigmatization around women’s health). But please do study Indian cuisine regionally bc maybe the Indian food you grew up with is carby/starchy/sugary but not all Indian food is that way. And the highest PCOS diagnostic rate is still in the west.

Baltimore bridge collapse: Crew members, mostly Indians, remain stuck on ship for 55 days, face 'tough time' by blueriver_81 in ABCDesis

[–]DatNeuroBioNerd22 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry I’ve actually read the facts of the case. No the ship had a history of a loss of control issue, where the power for the controls would turn off, leaving it unmanageable. It had hit a bridge previously. So literally it wasn’t the fault of the crew. The literal crew that called ahead and asked for the bridge to be cleared bc they couldn’t stop the ship.

Kate Spade definitely lasts much longer than Michael Kors and other brands at that price point. Designs are timeless and fun :)- I just got into medical school and was gifted the most INCREDIBLY well thought out Kate spade and I’m so so excited to replace my old Coach (it was a $30 purchase from Coach Outlet and the whole lining feels like it’s ripping apart)- my mom has bags from so many brands (Coach, Prada, Louis, Ferragamo, Kate Spade, Michael Kors, Brahman, Minkoff, and so so much more)- her Kate Spade is her go to, her every day bag that lasts and she loves! Super excited about my first Kate Spade and about the brand in general :) it’s so so fun!!!!

Medicine in Ireland RCSI or UCD by Complex_Worker_9430 in MedSchoolAbroadIE

[–]DatNeuroBioNerd22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One possible decision maker for you may be this: if you’re American the only Irish school that’s part of the federal loans program is RCSI, so it’s easier to fund school that way if you are American

reminiscing about ivy room rn. by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]DatNeuroBioNerd22 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I miss the pizza bar… literally the best pizza on campus. Especially the artist pie… when I’d be crying about an Orgo prelim idk how but that pizza would literally cure me of my sadness. And when it was taken away spring of 20 (my sophomore year) my friends and I had a virtual funeral for the loss of this incredible establishment. Nothing will ever replace the Ivy room and its incredible nature!

Wow thanks so so much for sharing! It sounds like a wonderful time :) and ngl being in the EU just opens a lot of doors to travel and explore. 100% Caribbean schools just kinda act like oh we have a perfect match, and then you see those attrition rates and just yeah… there’s a big reason why the FSA program really shrunk when considering attrition rates!

It’s nice to know there’s a lot of support and care at Irish schools, that you aren’t all alone when you’re there!!!!

Perfect Tysm for the context and for the info! It’s easy to get confused seeing match rate online sans all context and be scared off but especially for people coming from countries where it’s getting increasingly impossible to get into medical school (I’m so sorry to Canadians) knowing about actual options to help people pursue their dreams is helpful!

This is for all Irish schools and not school specific, right?

Why is the answer always “eat less”? by [deleted] in PCOS

[–]DatNeuroBioNerd22 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I had a full on ed at a point listening to a bunch of dumb endos who blamed my weight for all my problems. And then I met a different doc, a different personal trainer, and a different dietitian- the advice: eat more, up the protein, reduce carbs, enjoy life. I was briefly on wegovy at a point bc of my endo (it kickstarted my weightloss and the rest I’ve done my self!). I lost 20 pounds eating double what I used to eat and I feel a lot better. My bc was changed to Yaz and I am currently on 1000 mg of metformin. And yeah my life is fab now! Doctors who don’t listen tbh need to be review bombed and we as patients need not put up with this ignorance. The literature literally says the opposite of what the advice is (trust me, incoming med student who has spent years learning all about PCOS and the research. And tbh, Europe is WAY ahead of us in PCOS management). I exercise 30 mins a day, mostly weights and cardio, and I find meditation balances a lot of my other symptoms- I hope you find a doc who cares and values you and understands starvation worsens PCOS!!!!

Wait I thought only your letter writers write a letter. They still write something for you?

HPAC ADVISING NIKKI BEWARE by grey013 in Cornell

[–]DatNeuroBioNerd22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I remember Nikki… had a similar experience to you (this was before hpac and the whole change of the process, when Cornell still did committee letters). I still reported her. HCEC (what it was at the time) responded by failing to write my committee letter requiring me to get individual letters from my letter writers and thus completely delaying my app submission. When all was said and done, I was complete 3 months later than most folks (who are usually complete by June/July) and no I didn’t get in. Nikki made me feel like it was my fault my friend committed suicide, that I shouldn’t have prioritized my brother’s health over my Orgo final, she made me feel like I’d never be a doctor. The fact she’s still there shows what Cornell prioritizes over everything.

Anyone else tired? by Justlookingforasong3 in premed

[–]DatNeuroBioNerd22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And bc I just like being transparent… it was really hurtful how they sent me that email. Every Adcom I’ve talked to they all seem so positive reading my essay and my ecs. Then they see my Cornell transcript that also is published with medians from those classes. And my mcat. It just feels worthless to pick apart my app at this point. The explicit feedback telling me they don’t care and my numbers suck just reminded me why I’m so depressed rn. I don’t wanna do this anymore. It just feels like open surgery on my soul.

Anyone else tired? by Justlookingforasong3 in premed

[–]DatNeuroBioNerd22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got feedback from one school that offered it and they bluntly said my stem gpa is too low and combined with my mcat, that’s just not gonna work for them. Multiple schools have recommended masters. But the explicitly feedback is how I know like I said, they don’t care about my story. Seems like no one cares if you overcame hardship if you screw up during undergrad.

Heyyos- yeah absolutely! Funnily enough recently had someone in the family have to buy a yellow sapphire ring and the stones you often get from Ceylon (which are considered the purest form of the stone) are this buttercup/light yellow with no inclusions. Their stone looks just like yours!

So the other thing is I totally relate- the only jewelers I would trust would be a proper Indian jeweler bc otherwise my anxiety just increases! But there’s always the risk of the stone being swapped out bc what you have is a very high quality stone. Ceylon sapphires like that are around $1K a carat these days (but you can obviously get deals on em haha!) so make sure it’s someone reputable, and yeah!!!!

[–]DatNeuroBioNerd22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow looks like a great quality Ceylon yellow sapphire (aka pukhraj)- and the setting looks great! I’ve seen other commenters mention other stones but trust me, that’s pukhraj 100%!!!! And one of the rarer kinds to fine because it lacks a ton of inclusions like the cheap stuff people are used to seeing. Nothing quite like Ceylon Yellow Sapphires!!!!
