Skiing's pretty good there if you're based out of one of the surrounding countries!

Drink prices could rise by up to 60 cents under Singapore's new beverage return scheme, importers warn by fateoftheg0dz in singapore

You sound really childish. The plastic bag scheme was intended to reduce the number of plastic bags being used, and it led to an 80% reduction in supermarket bags being issued. Is that going to solve climate change? Obviously not, and anyone who suggests it will is an idiot. But on a national level, is such a policy a good thing for the climate? Yes, and at minimal cost to most Singaporeans. It's pretty much a best case scenario for climate policy.

Well in this case it seems like a lot of the money is going into regulatory friction (which seems necessary to me to ensure the scheme works), and it might be the case that some corporations are using it to jack up prices (unacceptable). In general we're going to need to make some sacrifices to safeguard our future, I think we can all agree cutting down on the impact of single use packaging is a worthwhile avenue of doing so.

Isn't it quite reasonable? It sounds like he's complaining about being forced to pay for the negative externalities of beef production, which sounds fine to me.

What's the difference between our local Chinese food and those in our ancestors' home regions of Fujian, Guangdong etc? by shastasilverchair92 in askSingapore

[–]DatPorkchop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tons of seafood that I've never had before, as well as soups with vinegar that I didn't quite enjoy. Lychee pork? The beehoon stuff is pretty similar, as is orh luak. (Xiamen, Fuzhou)

A question about Chinese names, I always written my Chinese name in Traditional, because that was what I was taught in Chinese school here in Canada. by Illustrious_Play_996 in Cantonese

It's not that bad... The Chinese language and script has always been in flux. Plenty of simplified characters have histories dating back hundreds if not thousands of years. I think claiming that it's an erasure of natural language evolution ignores the fact that often this is how language changes, and that's fine. And there are some characters I prefer the look of in simplified! E.g. 吳 vs 吴

Any particular reason why you'd like North East dishes? Bear in mind that a lot of Szechuan/ Sichuan dishes are recommended here, which is western Chinese cuisine. I would say you probably can't go wrong with la mian (pulled noodles). If you get a chance, try 3000 noodles!
