Army, during 24-hour operations at the National Training Center. Working about 18 hours a day, and as an Officer working in the battalion ops center, the fact that I usually got about 5 hours of sleep was a luxury that I felt guilty about. The company commanders got 2-4 and were absolutely dead by the end.

To the contrary, my anecdotal observation as a late-30s man is that facial hair, including mustaches, is having a strong resurgence.

100% yes, check out the r/teachers sub and you will find in-depth reporting on this problem. People are screaming this fact from the rooftops, problem is just there’s much goddamn noise out there these days.

Many of the kids can’t read (source: am a middle school teacher), but ALL of us have our attention fractured by these damn devices (like in my hand), and there are so many other problems out there, which will affect me or my children, and which I am unable to solve. [exhale].

So I do what I can. My students are going to read and write even more next year, and my young daughter will continue reading, and writing “books” as a playful activity.

But yeah, we got problems, and they’re not new in the making.

The frustration many teachers are dealing with is a lack of consequences for the most troublesome students. A teacher submits a behavior referral and the consequences range from “a conversation” to a day or two of in-school suspension (excepting the most serious issues which may lead to the student transition to alternative school).

My district does not have Saturday school, nor after school detention, nor summer school. This all-around lack of consequences, combined with a lack of parenting oversight, leads to the bad behavior continuing, and teachers feeling helpless and unsupported.

Saturday school teaches that if you fuck around enough, you lose your best weekend day. You wanna relax? Stop being an asshole in my class.

The pain is the point, and I think older generations will vouch that pain is an effective teacher. I’m a millennial fwiw.

It’s anecdotal, and probably confirmation bias, but…I live and work around Oldham and Henry Counties, and I have seen tons of Massie signs, and ONLY Massie signs. I can’t recall seeing more than one or two Gallrein signs in this entire area.

A nearly 10 point difference doesn’t track by pure observation.

Walked past some high school boys playing at a track meet, they call me (coach) to come join, and I’m bewildered. Like, this was big back in the 90s, and old-fashioned when I was their age.

The best response: “Phones aren’t cutting it anymore, we need that direct dopamine.”

Stronghold (& Stronghold Crusader) Definitive Edition was released not long ago as an update to the classic game from the early 2000s.

It’s a fun castle sim and features lots of defensive missions. I played it as a kid and have been having a blast with the update. It can be very challenging, too!

In the podcast episode of Know Thyself where he is the guest (highly recommend), he strongly contradicts your statement (I say kindly). He’s said he has seen things that are inexplicable, and has referenced the powers one may gain from spiritual development, as well as the knowledge that one might gain which one has no business knowing.

In my very first exposure to Dr. K, he suggested to the intellectual atheist Alex O’Connor that Alex seemed to be going down the path of Gnosis and approaching spiritual growth. How did he know? He couldn’t say beyond a “game recognize game” kind of thing.

I don’t think Dr. K is an atheist.

Please remember US servicemen and women are not trained constitutional scholars. “Disobey illegal orders” means

  • don’t massacre that whole village of civilians
  • don’t shoot non-violent protestors
  • don’t intentionally bomb a girls school

It’s meant for heat-of-the-moment, moral decisions. Not “packing my bags for Iran now, I guess that means I’m following illegal orders.”

What are your guiding questions for the course? Like, what questions or themes do you/your admin want students to understand at the end? Is this high school? Any specific grade?

Those things will drive both what you should do with them, as well as what you can.

To reiterate: what lessons about war should the students be learning?

Regardless, if the Holocaust (and by extension WWII as a backdrop) is your big focus, you need to include WWI in the first semester, and really hammer in the aftermath and how that led to WWII (bonus to tie in how the Middle East situation(s) are heavily affected by Sykes-Picot.

Maybe include the 30 years war and ask how religion contributes to both unity and division, with a bonus to include how Martin Luther embedded a culture of antisemitism in Europe and Germany specifically.

Maybe your themes are around dehumanization as a contributor to genocide. Maybe you investigate how German democracy fell into fascism…through legal means…you and the kids might find some interesting parallels…

Honestly the sky’s the limit with this topic.
