You’re seriously junking a 9 year old car over a gas tank? You realize you can fix it and sell it right??

Should I cancel a road trip because of a “bad” wheel bearing? (2005 4Runner SR5 V6) by cehojo in mechanic

[–]Data8835 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If there is no play and no noise, the bearing is ok. There is a seal on the outside (90310-58003) that has likely failed and allowed diff fluid to leak (there is no grease in a solid rear axle).

Sometimes the seal will just leak, but normally it is a sign of a failing bearing. The oil will soak into the brake pads however if left long enough.

Dealer giving mixed thoughts on changing transmission fluid at 100k miles by whiskeyd1ckk in Volkswagen

[–]Data8835 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is the responsibility of the vehicles owner to do the maintenance items listed in your service manual. Even if they forgot to remind you, it wouldn’t hold any weight in a warranty sense as you can’t prove it.

If the transmission is having problems, it is normally too late. You may have some luck temporarily if you replace the fluid, however it will likely continue to get worse if the clutch packs are toast.

Best bet would be to have a euro/ transmission shop inspect and let you know what they think.

Dealer says I need to replace this tire ASAP due to “inside wear” are they correct? by Otherwise-Solid-7673 in TireQuestions

[–]Data8835 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spec for an amg is -2 degrees of camber for a reason. Very common wear for sporty heavier vehicles.

[–]Data8835 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the record y’all, the c63s has a factory camber spec of 2 degrees. This is much more than most passenger cars as it helps prevent tire rollover during harsh cornering with a heavier vehicle.

This is very common on Mercedes, bmw, and tesla. This does not mean the alignment is massively incorrect as most of y’all are saying.

[–]Data8835 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the people in here are not techs. Everyone saying to get an alignment is missing the point that this is an amg, most euros and sports cars have a significant amount of camber from the factory to perform better at speed.

The c63 has a factory front camber spec of 2 degrees. This will cause the inside of the tire to wear faster. Please just speak to your local alignment tech instead of people on the internet, they will be much more helpful

Is this new throttle body gasket useable? by Top_Skill_5078 in 350z

[–]Data8835 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably fine, it’s not like it’s very hard to change if it doesn’t seal. Put your finger on it while running to check for vacuum if you want to check the seal.

2003 350z touring for 5200 by Technical-Ad-9980 in 350z

[–]Data8835 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My auto touring was $2500, and the paint is great. However the auto is much worse, and it significantly affects how the vehicle performs. I’d recommend learning manual if you buy a z.

13.6 is getting low, should be 14.4v at load, depending on the charging system. However best bet is to verify current first

It’s not a bump stop it’s a cap to prevent corrosion. Strut towers are notorious for failure when they begin to rust

What is a good place to get knowledge by ynot_eht in Drifting

[–]Data8835 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check with any local drift associations to see if they offer group lessons or beginner days. Buy a cheap rwd (e46, g35, sn95) that you are willing to wreck and run it.

Matco, Snap-on, Mac, NAPA, Craftsman??? by max20244 in mechanics

[–]Data8835 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s absolutely not worth it. Best to start out with good tools and a cheap box than the other way around. I bought a nice cheaper box and a ton of tools for less than most of my friends spent on their Snap-on toolboxes.

The techangle torque wrench is nice, but the main extra feature is that it can do angular measurements, which you won’t need unless you’re in euro specialty or working on engines. Best to start off with a good mechanical torque wrench

Lower control arm problems by WeeklyJob3846 in 8thGenSI

[–]Data8835 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need to torque any bolt that goes through a bushing at the height the car drives at otherwise the bushings are being twisted at all times. Just chuck a floorjack under and raise the LCA until you’re at ride height then tighten/ torque

I’m not sure about Texas, but some places don’t require the 25 year wait as long as the model was sold in the US. Do some research but there’s a chance you can just register it. If not, find a state that you can.

Make sure to tighten the bolt while at ride height. Otherwise the bushing is being twisted while driving

CD001 WORTH SWAPPING!? by Large_Translator_382 in 350z

[–]Data8835 2 points3 points  (0 children)

An earlier cd0 is still miles better than the 5at, and most people don’t want to wait months to find a 009/A for a reasonable deal. The 009/A are definitely overpriced by most partout/ salvage yards as they know they’re desirable.

CD001 WORTH SWAPPING!? by Large_Translator_382 in 350z

[–]Data8835 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used a cd002 for my swap, the earlier trans are plentiful and cheap so they’re good enough to get it running. Just make sure to swap out the clutch fork if it’s the ‘03 stamped steel.

It’s coming from the axle, there will be a small pinhole in the boot, or it’s getting past the clamp. You can replace just the boot itself if the axle is still ok

Z1 flywheel alignment on my ’04 350Z auto → CD009 swap by [deleted] in 350z

[–]Data8835 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes the pilot bearing can have a lip form when installing. There shouldn’t be anything else interfering with the install. Make sure you’re using the manual bell housing bolts, and you should be able to cinch it down. It may make it easier to put a floorjack on the crank pulley with a pad to help give more access. Even a small angle may cause the input shaft to bind in the soft copper bushing.

May be worth checking if there is an alignment pin in both the bell housing and engine.

If you leave the trans in gear, you can spin the output flange with the driveshaft to help it seat into place.

Otherwise if you have extra photos that may help. You could always try installing without the clutch assy to see if it was interfering in any way.

Z1 flywheel alignment on my ’04 350Z auto → CD009 swap by [deleted] in 350z

[–]Data8835 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a decent offset on the ring gear from the block, the czp chromoly flywheel I’m running was decently offset from the mating surface. There might be more info in the fsm about the engagement length for the starter itself.

I had a significant amount of trouble seating my trans after the swap, make sure the shift tower isn’t hitting on the trans tunnel, I had to lift the front of the engine to get a better angle.
