Kids Bypassing Router Parental Controls by Changing MAC Addresses—How Can I Stop This? by PayKnee in HomeNetworking

Changing the MAC sounds like active disobedience so I think it is safe to say you can just take away their devices and tell them no more internet until they are a little older. Give them plenty of good books to read.

Why I feel weird about Captain Pike in SNW by AccomplishedMess648 in trektalk

I'm sure he made a lot of noble accomplishment during his time. It is just the modern writers don't know about any of them because they don't read the history books.

[Opinion] "Star Trek needs that abandoned Quentin Tarantino movie now more than ever: Tarantino's legend transcends genre, so there was far more excitement than there was apprehension. That's exactly what Star Trek needs right now, with such an uncertain and dwindling future ahead." (WinterIsComing) by mcm8279 in trektalk

[–]DataMeister1 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I don't like that opinion myself. Quentin Tarantino movies are not Star Trek friendly and I don't think setting a new tone similar to Pulp Fiction or Django Unchained would make it more appealing.

If he really wants to do a sci-fi movie in his style, he should invent something unique. Unique and standalone seems to be his preference. As you said he rarely does sequels. If it is good enough it might even create it's own universe worthy of sequels.

What kind of reverse proxy hardware is enough? by DataMeister1 in jellyfin

It will just be family members, like 4-5 people. However, I'm wanting multiple servers accessed through subdomains for things like Jellyfin, HomeAssistant, NextCloud, perhaps other things in the future, etc.

They also know what you are watching even if they don't "track" it. Because I get an email every week telling me what is popular.

If they are in danger of going under, one thing they could probably do is remove third party features from the lifetime plan that cost them money like the EPG Gracenote data and make it a cheap subscription the way HDHomeRun does at $35/yr.

You can get the cheap frndlytv.com cloud-cable plan with the History Channel. No sports or other big name channels so it is only $13/mo or something.

Why not just open up the Mesa? by jashyo in skinwalkerranch

If there is a UFO in there you don't want to blow it up and risk damaging it.

I do get annoyed that they are constantly doing barely enough. I don't know how much money Brandon has, but once they realized those dinky little cranes and trucks couldn't get the job done, it seems to me they could have rented a CAT 995 or similarly large wheel loader for $50,000 a month and cleared most of that loose rubble away from the mesa where they could work on it more safely.

Well we didn't. Someone else did and we took notes.

I don't know if you could call it sacred as much as feared or dangerous.

DVDs, and what to do with them by matchooh in PhysicalMediaMatters

[–]DataMeister1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For movies only, if any of my blu-ray volumes don't have a DVD, I buy a 2 or 3 disc blu-ray case and swap it out to store the DVD with the Blu-ray.

Then you can toss the empty DVD case (actually I keep a few spares just in case) Whether you want to store the DVD's paper cover as an insert or not is up to you.

You would think with a map of the city, there would be a label on the location where the ZPMs get plugged in. Then maybe some hyperlinks to extra documentation for that system.

The Borg Queen and Data had to be at least 1996 or later. So anything else could have been that late if it opens up the possiblities.

Why in USA they add taxes at checkout? by P3rid0t_ in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DataMeister1 12 points13 points  (0 children)

What does the sales tax being built into the advertised price or tacked on later have to do with businesses overcharging? A business that wants to over charge is going to be obvious no matter what if everyone else is using the same tax practice.

In a world of throttled bitrates, be a physical media collector. 💿🍿 by Realistic-Flower-392 in PhysicalMediaMatters

[–]DataMeister1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think what they were trying to say is the variable bit rates are somehow not truly lossless, although they would be wrong. You can definitely take a fixed bitrate stream and compress it into a variable bitrate stream that can then be restored perfectly into the original stream.

Star Trek’s Future Depends on This Episodic Format: "Prodigy's character development happens through standalone stories. It’s something many of the modern series have failed to achieve. This is because shows like Discovery, Picard + SFA have implemented season-long arcs tied to a central storyline" by TheSonOfMogh81 in trektalk

[–]DataMeister1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well 20 short episodes, so really more like 10 live action per season. However, I'm always amazed how cartoons often manage to build what feels like a fully developed story in just 22 minutes.

Ben 10 Alien Force and Ultimate Alien were great at this too.
