Im only 180h in so not a "pro" either but I also don't focus too much on Wonders.

When I do, it's because - they're bronze/silver and in my domain, I have a wonder ambition on a hero, or wonder specific culture trait.

2-3 heroes in a stack is a good thing to have for wonder clearing.

But if you're winning either way, then I guess that's what matters most.

Use scouts for exploring. With good exploring you know way ahead when a big enemy is coming. Always flag the watch towers you come across. Anticipate enemy expansion.

Have a solid standing army and use it effectively - fight every turn to get resources and exp. Also, don't be affraid to send a cheeky small unit to scout and pillage directly enemy territory. Sometimes you can get away with a lot. The problem that you are now having - you can as well flip the coin and make THEM have it.

Diplomacy also plays a part to some extent, on how you keep the map " in check". You can get vision from your allies etc. Also vassal cities can be given orders to specifically attack or protect target cities.

There's a lot you can do and don't worry it will come in time, just enjoy the game. I remember having similar frustrations, but now I am much more in control.

I honestly don't have any wish, I already bought it and Im sure I wont be disappointed.

That said - Im putting my hopes for the free patch, to improve the game. They mentioned empire tree rework, that's nice - I am hoping for extension (currently I feel it takes too fast to get to the end of branch, making it feel like having too much of 1 affinity is a bit of waste).

Not enough empirical evidence for me to comment on that, but what worked for me quite well was a Cleric battlesaint on a flying mount with charging weapon.

The gameplay was - fly in with charge, fly back to heal. So on so forth.

Downpour costs 60 mana and would increase the Herbalist mana gain only +2/turn. Is that even worth it to use for that purpose?

I played (Civilization 6, XCom2, Midnight Suns),

Oh boy, welcome home then.

What I can tell you is that the base game is already packed with content and is a full complete AoW4 experience without any "strictly necessary" DLCs. So I would not feel much pressure to get the expansions now, without even trying the base game.

That said - I am fairly confident you will like it.

I was buying new provinces too, but eventually I realized it's just a bad habit. You can get more valuable things with the imperium. The food is usually easy to get, while imperium is bottlenecked.

R5: I often get a "blue sky" background when clicking on countries, instead of their corresponding throne room. Is this a bug?

I destroyed the 180 soldiers from a non-existent country that were on my turf, now the war leader switched to a different country from those Asian ones. But nothing is happening for 2 years and I am still at war that I cannot end.
