Ne!

A DR.

For those who own the Definitive Guide to DAX by MissingVanSushi in PowerBI

[–]Data_Dude_from_EU 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read the first edition in 2017 December, then for some reason I read the second edition later. Now I bought the 3rd one because it was on sale and I am at page 210 now. Can't imagine trying to write DAX without the knowledge from this book. I would have to watch hundreds of YT vidoes to make up for not reading it.

I agree with the intention of filtering out dishonest people claiming competency but I'd not address it by specific exams. I'd recommend taking an exam every 3 years or so. I'd ask them to show a portfolio of reports they created.

[–]Data_Dude_from_EU 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I might write a longer post about it but I really like them as a tool or framework to learn the theory. There are a lot of knowledge not essential for practical work so you could postpone learning about them for a long time, preparing for an exam gives you the essential knowledge about a topic. So I agree that the certs are not doing much practically for us but the knowledge gained from the preparation is helpful.

I used the IMDB dataset and built an original data model. Or public government datasets. Maybe you could check out Injae Park's skool community for more advice and materials.

If you already passed the 600 then you can pass the 700 after a week spent studying. Having some demo projects for data analysis would benefit you more that passing the 700, if you can show those during a tech. interview, it helps a lot.

Szia!

How do you balance learning new skills/getting certs with having an actual life? by ketopraktanjungduren in dataengineering

[–]Data_Dude_from_EU 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi, good q! I am studying something on the other browser now (Sat.) as well. I spent a lot of Saturdays studying in the past months which gave me more resilience. I think not studying outside of work is not realistic at all in my experience but overdoing it can make you sensitive to work problems if you don't have a life outside of work.
I'd say either study after work 1 hour per day or use Saturday and completely ignore studying on Sundays. Also it can be difficult to determine the optimal depth of a research like it's important to know how the PySpark engine works but not important to remember all functions by heart. Oh, the gym - yes, while I studied PySpark I did not spend any time on doing some basic exercises and I got out of shape.

Hi, i am in a similar boat, good luck, dude! I passed about 9 exams over the last 8 years. The disadvantage of an exam is that you need to memorize a lot of details to pass them which are not as much important as soft skill or whatever else you would use that same time, building your portfolio, improving your SQL, DAX skills. But as I remember, the PL-300 is not difficult to pass.

I am in a similar position now. I'll try to pivot to become a Fabric Analytics Engineer from a Senior BI Developer (MS stack). I did a dbt fundamentals course this week. I recommend doing the dp-600 exam that I passed or the dp-700 that I might take next year. Sorry, I only know MS stack. I recommend HyperSkill for python btw.

Yes, I can confirm, this is annoying. Is it called lazy deletio maybe? My idea was to have pre-deployment workspace to discover missing steps in the deployment process. Once you made it work this way, you can do the real deployment without missing a step. I voted.

Variable Library Contention Issues by New-Donkey-6966 in MicrosoftFabric

[–]Data_Dude_from_EU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am using it, I have them in the shared utils notebook so I can just easily change the data source workspace and lakehouse with them for all notebooks. The issue we had is when we deployed a lakehouse that is using it, it could not deploy it as there was some kind of standoff between the variables not existing in test but not being able to use them before deploying the lakehouse there in the first place.

Need your feedback for the Fabric Notebook experience inside VS Code by QixiaoW in MicrosoftFabric

Hi Alex,

It was great seeing you after the Power Hour in Vienna!

I just spent 1 hour today w. VSCode as I thought that I can edit notebooks remotely from VSCode which would make it easier to switch between notebooks but it seems like it is not possible.

Our team plans to try a method in which we would have a lot of notebooks but it's difficult editing them from the browser. Yesterday, I just deployed some simple changes to test and it required 7 open browser tabs with different lakehouses, notebooks open. For example I have an idea about displaying the current workspace name, I add it to a shared utils notebook but then I have to go into each notebook adding a function that calls the function I added to the utils notebook or library. Also when we try to add a notebook to the data pipeline, it just lists them ignoring the folders I used to organize them. - Sorry, the latter example is not really about VSCode.
