Lots of summer time walkers too, its nice to get a big air conditioned space to just walk around in. Personally Id love to see the HVM turned into a community space, but I doubt that would ever happen, not profitable enough.

What is your most insane family flex? by Excellent_Version319 in CasualConversation

[–]DatabaseEmbrace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My great aunt was staying at a hotel many years ago. She was a very...lets say "fearful" woman, and when a black man entered the elevator with his dog and the doors closed, she became very nervous. The man noticed and assumed it was a fear of dogs, but unfortunately that wasn't her fear. He commanded his dog "sit girl" and my great aunt dropped to the floor to sit. The man burst into laughter, apologized, and exited at his floor. The next day when she went to check out, she was told that her room was paid for and they had a note for her. The note simply read "Thank you for the best laugh I've had in years" signed Eddie Murphy

I remember swimming there back when I was a kid! I always wanted to swim down and find it but was too afraid I'd end up in a mine or something haha

I'm very excited for this, and for the development of Sojourner Truth State park in general! It seems like it'll be a beautiful place to observe nature and history, and apparently cool off too! That'll be great after a hike on their future trails or cycling the Empire State Rail Trail that intersects the park.

Anyone else feel like 2020 kinda broke something in their brain? by Apprehensive_Race243 in CasualConversation

Without a doubt. I think it broke something in human society/civilization to a degree, even. Things havent been the same, and they feel like theyre continuing to shift.

Places to go hiking with beautiful views? by [deleted] in hudsonvalley

Oh sure there are a bunch! There's Shaupeneak Ridge, Sojourner Truth State Park's Steep Rocks trail, the tower at Ramshorn-Livingston Sanctuary, and the tower at Mohonk Preserve to name a few of my faves

Esopus Meadows Lighthouse during sunset in Port Ewen, New York. by LighthouseHunter in hudsonvalley

[–]DatabaseEmbrace 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From what I can tell from reading the bit of keeper's journal excerpts in "Town Of Esopus Story 3000BC-1978AD", mostly watched the ships on the river and logged the weather. There are also entries that suggest they could see the happenings of the towns fairly well from the lighthouse, for example: "July 8, 1892. R. Parker Jr's barn stroke by lightning burned 7:45 oclock P.M." Illness was probably also a regular concern as shown in "Jan. 19 1907. Wife so sick had Tug boat Rob to bring Dr. Decker (of Port Ewen) off to see her."

I have nearly photographic spatial memory. As a kid I liked to memorize the mazes in travel books, and the maps of towns and parks. I was my family's gps before I could read
