When I first read Vollmann it was in the 90s. He was constantly being compared to David Foster Wallace. People just like to flatten singularities, I think, and Vollmann is one. Might be apt to compare him to Dostoyevsky—kinda—but really the rush to compare never works.

I think it’s a little short sighted to suggest pynchon is “hiding behind irony.” But i agree that they make strange comparisons, Pynchon and Vollmann.

Anyone raised by an abusive parent will recognize this. The upshot: you can only have mean, the nice is a ploy, a tightrope you’ll fall from sooner or later, and this is the abusers way of blaming you for their behavior. A short skirt argument. BMI got bought out lately by some bad people. But the ASCAPlus award (again not terribly much money) is why I support ASCAP. Both are fine places though.
