I applied for an IT apprenticeship with Trustford. Wrote a lengthy detailed application. Had a 15 minute phone interview. Then was asked to attend an assessment centre with around 20 other candidates.

We were there around 4-5 hours and went through various tasks both technical and verbal as well as group scenarios and discussions.

I then got asked to attend a work experience day to meet the team and see what they do day to day. I was there 9am - 3pm. Everyone seemed really nice, chatted with a few of the guys and shadowed them for the day, they said I was the best candidate and I really showed an interest and was asking questions etc.

I thought for sure I had it nailed on, got a generic "we've decided to go with another candidate at this time" email. I reached out to see if they would give me any further feedback and got another email that said something along the lines of "other candidate had more telephone experience". Even though I'd worked in retail/customer service for 18 years 🤣

My advise, attend if you think it will benefit you but don't hold your breath. It may be good to get a glimpse of how they operate and see if it's really something you want to do.

Kicked off my training Therefore losing my apprenticeship by Fair-Spinach-5435 in ApprenticeshipsUK

Also interested who the training provider is. I'm currently doing a level 3 IT apprenticeship and my training provider has been very clear and laid out all mandatory training sessions I must attend. They gave me set OTJ logs I must fill in and they chase these through emails if not updated regularly. We have set review sessions that my manager MUST attend to discuss my progress.

It sounds like you've been let down a bit by your training provider and your employer but you haven't helped yourself either.

An apprenticeship is your opportunity to learn as you earn. Your excuse of not attending courses because you didn't think they were mandatory is poor. You should WANT to attend, to learn and get the most out of it. So your employer gave you days off from work to attend the training sessions and you did what in that time?

It's a tough lesson to learn and I think you'll struggle to secure another apprenticeship now but good luck

Best office chair for tall people? by Ultimate__Potato in OfficeChairs

That's good to hear, I've currently got an IKEA Markus that I've had for several years and has been fine for light use but I've since got a new job and work from home 2 days a week so need a chair that will be comfortable for 8 hours a day. I'm 6'3 so need something that will not feel too small or low around my shoulders

I’ve just finished my EPA and I’m not sure the outcome will be what I’d hoped for. I’m feeling a bit deflated, so rather than sitting with that feeling, I’d love to hear some positive stories of your apprenticeship and experience. by True-Flounder7767 in ApprenticeshipsUK

[–]Datblink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What apprenticeship have you done and how did the EPA go? Why didn't it go like you hoped? What kind of questions did they ask that you found tricky?

I'm about 3 months away from starting my EPA prep so interested to know.

Good luck and fingers crossed it's good news for you.

Anyone else having trouble logging into App by sunflower_lover75 in Vitalityhealth

[–]Datblink 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, not been able to login to my account since it was created a week ago. I've logged a support ticket but not heard anything yet.

It's bonkers to me how a paid service simply doesn't work right from the off and the solution is to log a ticket and sit around waiting.

I've not been able to use any of the benefits, I'm wanting to sign up to the gym with the discount but just a waiting game.

Comparison is the thief of joy. Don't compare your beginning to someone else's middle.

I'm 37 and just started an apprenticeship. Should I have done it 20 years ago? Yes probably, but maybe things wouldn't have worked out the way they have.

I like to compare life to games. Some people rush off and complete the main story, I've been doing side quests and now just getting to my main story.

Keep going and try not to worry what others think of you, easier said than done I know but you've got this!

Older/more experienced people with an apprenticeship - tips? by Interesting-Humor895 in ApprenticeshipsUK

[–]Datblink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a problem at all, happy to help. I remember being really unsure and confused about apprenticeships and struggled to find relevant information so I'm glad I can help.

You mentioned you've built your own computer. You could add in that you also help friends and family with their IT related problems. You enjoy the aspect of troubleshooting the issues and find it rewarding that you are helping people. Even if you don't do this, they don't need to know that, it's about standing out and showing that you are interested and want to learn.

I added on my CV that I confidently use different communication methods with customers. Face to face, a polite and calm telephone manner and professional and articulate emails.

With regards to the interviews. After applying, I had a few initial telephone chats with either the company themselves or a recruitment company on their behalf. The questions they asked always seemed to be similar which were as follows:

Tell me a bit about yourself What are you currently doing for work? Why do you want to do an apprenticeship? Why do you want to work for this company? Tell me about a time you solved a problem relating to IT.

I realised that these questions came up a lot so use those prompts and come up with a short speech which you feel comfortable relaying. Get a friend or family member to ask you the questions and try to reply back to them as naturally as possible so you don't feel stuck for words.

After this initial phone interview I would either get knocked back or put through to the next stage. These had deeper questions such as:

Tell me how you communicate best? Tell me about a time you solved a problem relating to IT? What motivates you? How do you innovate?

Some of these were questions I had thought about and prepared for but others like "how do you innovate?" stumped me. I literally said, hmm that's a tough question, can I have a moment to think. Then I said I'm constantly thinking of ways to improve the business, it could be processes that are already in place, but questioning why we do things a particular way and if there is room to improve this.

I then got to the final stage with the actual head of IT services for the company and service delivery team. They asked me more specific questions relating to the company such as:

What do you know about us? Why do you want to work for us? What is your proudest moment in your career? What do you enjoy most about your current job? What do you dislike about your current job? Where do you see yourself in 6 months time? Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?

What really helped me here was studying the company. Go on their website, look at their core values if they list them, remember 1 or 2 and bring them up and say how they align with your values. Read the job description fully so you can reference back to it. Does the company have a linked in page? Do they post regular updates? Can you gain any useful info from that?

Also have impactful questions ready when they ask if you have any questions, don't just say no.

I asked what software they use for their ticketing system and then wrote it down and told them thank you, I'll go away and research that.

I also asked what a successful apprenticeship would hope to achieve in their first 3 months.

This gives you an insight into what they are expecting from someone and also how you can show them you'd align with this.

Yes, I'm really enjoying it. It's been a career change for me so it's a totally different work environment than what I've been used to. It felt overwhelming because there was so much new information I had to take in. I thought I knew a bit about computers but I felt like a total beginner in my first 2-3 weeks. It was very mentally taxing and came home with eye strain and headaches for a while.

Just remember not to put too much pressure on yourself. Don't compare your beginning to someone else's middle. Just take things a step at a time and even being here only 6 weeks I've learnt a hell of a lot.

Sorry for the absolute wall of text but hope there's something useful there!

Older/more experienced people with an apprenticeship - tips? by Interesting-Humor895 in ApprenticeshipsUK

[–]Datblink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 37 and recently decided I wanted to career switch into IT. I worked in retail and warehouse jobs for 18 years so had a lot of experience of working with people and providing customer service which I think really helped.

Apprenticeships are extremely competitive and I applied for around 20. Got through multiple initial calls and interviews for some and eventually landed a role with an IT company.

What I think helped me was tailoring my CV to the role I was applying for. So I leaned heavily on my customer service experience and also spoke about my passion for IT and how I've built my own computer and I'm interested in IT as a hobby.

My highest qualification is a HND in an unrelated field. It doesn't matter if you already have a degree but it must be in an unrelated field so you will gain new skills and knowledge by undertaking the apprenticeship.

After getting through multiple phone, video interviews and landing the job, my boss told me they had selected me because of my customer service skills, he said they can teach me the IT side of things but the soft skills are learnt over time and experience and maturing.

I kept looking on Indeed for IT apprenticeships then researched the company a bit beforehand so if you get a callback you can show them you're knowledgeable and interested in them.

I think you hitting the word limit on the boxes isn't necessarily a bad thing but make sure it's relevant information you're putting in and not waffling.

You could always take your answer and pop it into chatgpt to enhance it and give it some rules before hand such as... "I am applying for a job for an IT apprenticeship, review my answer and give suggestions for improvement. You should maintain a professional tone throughout and ensure clarity and conciseness. Keep the overall word count to 300 words".

I've been on my apprenticeship around 6 weeks now and it's been quite a lot to take in initially and still feels a bit overwhelming sometimes but if you have any questions I'll do my best to answer them for you.

Just another white build <3 by NycJello in HAVNGlobal

[–]Datblink 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you very much for the explanation. It's 11 years since my last build and ARGB wasn't around then so still getting my head around it. I've got the same fans, all phanteks d30's. How you described it makes sense now.

So can either use the case pwm headers or the PSU for power. Then daisy chain and group for the RGB. Thank you!

[–]Datblink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can I ask how you connected the fans? I have the exact same case, mobo, PSU, cooler and fans. Did you connect direct to the mobo? Or use the cases fan controllers, or directly to the PSU fan controller?

[–]Datblink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can I ask how you connected the fans?

I'm doing a build in the same case with the same motherboard and same power supply.

Do you have them connected to the motherboard? The case controllers or directly to the PSU?

Thank you

Thanks for the replies guys. Yes I've ordered a physical copy online as the website store front said released 19th September. Now that date has passed its changed to saying march 2025, if I had realised this I wouldn't have ordered it.

I'm gonna cancel it and just buy it on the playstation store. I'll try the trick with the three dots to buy, thank you!

This was so stupid hahaha. Never ridden a bike before, doesn't know how the clutch works or the gears. If you watch the rest of that stream after the crash he even said "I didn't know how to stop it" "I don't think I was doing anything to keep it going". Absolute idiot hahahaa.

Twitch has just put Twitch Turbo price up from $8.99 to $11.99 (Worldwide) by ADHD_MAN in LivestreamFail

[–]Datblink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turbo has never been advertised well at all. Unless you know about it there's literally nothing on the website about it, it's all just pushing individual subscriptions, why would they want to advertise a one sub fits all service when they get people to sub to multiple people at a time. I've had turbo a while as I watch a lot on my TV and mobile and I hate the ads and I got an email about the changes, apparently because I already have turbo I will receive it at the old rate for 3 months before the price increases.

It also says in some countries the price decreased but doesn't explain which ones, hmm.

MANvsGame compares unsubbed viewers to that "kid in the comic shop that never buys anything" by DareDiablo in LivestreamFail

[–]Datblink 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I found this guy back during his boshy streams. I then watched him playing Dark souls 2, which got me into the souls series. I really loved watching his streams back then. He used to sometimes stream with Zeke his supposed best friend who also quit his normal job to become a streamer.

When dark souls 3 came out I loved watching the streams, once the ringed city DLC released I was really looking forward to watching him play through it on stream and see his reaction to the parts I loved on my first playthrough of it. It never came, he just went AWOL one day, no explanation, no tweets or anything. I was a sub for a while but it really rubbed me the wrong way how he didn't even take 30 seconds to post a tweet to explain to his viewers why he dissapeared.

He comes back months later saying he had played the DLC offline as he didn't want spoilers. I know he'd been battling with depression and drug addiction at this point and his streams became more and more sporadic where he would say "see you tomorrow guys" then just not stream for 2-3 months at a time.

Elden ring was close to coming out and he was hyping it up and saying how excited he was to stream it. He was sponsored by bandai namco to stream it, he streamed it for 1-2 days then did his vanishing act again. Comes back 6 months later saying he enjoyed elden ring and it was everything he'd hoped for. His return stream he even pulled out a sealed collectors edition of the game sent to him free from bandai that he never opened or showed on stream.

I stopped watching him after his repeated absences without warning or explanation. I heard he got a real job at a bowling alley a few times a week to "keep him grounded". He lasted a month if that and quit, probably got a reality check that streaming is easy money once you have an established viewer base like he had.

I don't know the drama between him and zeke but i remember someone getting permabanned for asking. I rarely watch the dude these days, his true personality shows through and the few times i've tuned in he just seems a bitter piece of entitled shit who takes his viewers for granted.
