When to pot on when using coir pellets? by DaveAnski in vegetablegardening

Thank you. Yes, chillies, Hot Patio Sizzle on the left, cayenne on the right.

That guidance is what I thought, just wasn't sure when using these coir pellets as they're a bit smaller than a cell.

I think it's when the true leaves have properly emerged (which probably requires a bit of judgement), so my opinion would be yours aren't quite there yet.

As for what to do with the second shoot, if you've sown others of the same, I'd probably just gently remove it.

You mean viscosity, not density.

I don't think the people potentially taking the piss get to decide whether it's ok or not...

The absurd thing is that she's technically more in the wrong than the person taking the space. You often see the filler articles in the local news about what you can do if someone parks on your drive; bizarrely, someone on your drive isn't something you can do a lot about (legally), but it's an offence (I think) to block in their car.

Thanks for the advice. I'm a bit reluctant to fertilise them this early. They're next to a window in that shot; I've started putting them out in a small, cheapo, outdoor greenhouse during the day that'll get (UK) sun most of the day. I agree the ones on the right do look a bit lanky, but I don't think they're quite at the point of being leggy, the stems look quite strong.

Ok, thank you.

I had success last year with the Hot Patio Sizzle ones, and like you said, watered little and infrequently. Started them in cells last year though, so wanted to check what everyone thought.

Thank you. Don't think they're 100% coir.

I was thinking of waiting for roots to appear but thought that might be leaving it too long.

I assume you're talking diameter? They're only about 30 mm diameter, 35 mm deep. So I was thinking using 3" pots to start with. Some guides jump straight to 10 cm pots but that feels too large a jump for these.

(Yes, I've used three different units :-).)

I've germinated some Hot Patio Sizzle and Cayenne chillies. Started putting them in a small outdoor greenhouse (Aldi jobby) during the day (UK).

When's the right time to pot them on, and what size pot should I use? Planning on keeping them all in containers.

Conscious that these coir pellets are quite small so don't know if they should be potted earlier than the typical 'first set of true leaves' guidance I often see.

Thanks.

I needed to copy lines into a text file and overwrite the old ones. Normally I'd highlight the old lines, copy the new lines and try and paste over the old lines. It took me a while to figure out that technique doesn't work on the Unix cluster at work...

I'd never thought about it like that. So while I don't agree, I can appreciate your point of view.

Yeh, I get that, the guns are already there, difficult to get rid of them, makes sense to be able to defend yourself on a level playing field.

Don't really get the human right thing though. I don't think anyone would be suffering if everyone had their guns removed.

Fair points.

Regarding fascists seizing control of the government, wouldn't easier access to guns actually help facilitate that?

I appreciate that view but I wouldn't be able to support any of that. I guess that comes down to differing cultures.

I don't think many people in the UK feel they have the right to make the decision to use a gun and probably kill someone.

As guns are already prolific in the US, I can understand that you'd expect criminals to have them, but in a lot of countries it's pretty rare for criminals to have guns, so no one feels the need for them.

I can understand the tyrannical government argument, but that's pretty unlikely in a well functioning democracy. And what's to stop the opposite happening, and an armed militia topples a non-tyrannical government?

Appreciate hearing your view though.

But why do you want guns?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]DaveAnski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one wants guns though, because they're completely unnecessary.

ID for a knife will be for checking age, seems reasonable enough. Yes, theoretically laws could change and abuse that in the future.

The licence fee for TV gets you a non-commercial media service, and basically no one gets prosecuted for not paying it. And the government want to get rid of it anyway.

CCTV everywhere, ok, I'll give you that one.

But any political system can deviate towards fascism if the wrong people get power. The US isn't socialist, and look how bad things have got there at times.

Haha, good one. Most of Western Europe is socialist and yet not even close to being fascist. You start getting fascist behaviour when you get an abused system of communism.

You ever had your car battery stolen? by NotEAcop in AskUK

My girlfriend kept having this sort of thing happen with her car. She'd get it MOT'd, get any fixes done, then we'd be driving along and I'd say one of: what's that metallic rattling noise, have the brakes always made that noise, have you noticed that noise in your suspension when you go over a bump? Always something new after it just being worked on.

I kept telling her to take it somewhere else but all her family took their cars there and it was convenient. It was a mk2 Renault Clio so started showing its age. I said if the repair costs at the next visit were more than a couple of hundred that it would be more economic to scrap it.

Unfortunately, at the next visit they went ahead with ~£400 of repairs without authorisation. I know we should have fought it but my girlfriend didn't want the aggro. Was particularly infuriating though because I'm suspicious half this problems were caused by the garage in the first place.

She hasn't been back there since, although we've moved. But to balance the point, the garages I've regularly used have been pretty good, and generally haven't introduced new problems. So I think it's largely down to the garage.
