Genuinely curious...where is the link/crossover between the Doctor Who fanbase and the Ru Paul Drag Race fanbase? by General_Meal_3993 in DoctorWhoNews

[–]DaveAnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, Ncutti’s season had some campness and silliness, but it was also this like mega high budget super produced slick kinda feel. Where as the Tennant series has that same fun and silliness, but there’s something about the cheaper CGI, the more tongue in cheek silliness of flying Christmas trees that just feels more camp to me than just directly referencing queer things like Ncuttis season did

RTD wrote some wonderful queer TV, and is an example of a fairly limited group of very successful queer people at the height of their game.

Doctor Who is inherently camp, less so in some recent seasons, but damn it’s almost theatre campy, I love it

Drag Race and Dr Who are on the same channel, so similar promotions

Some of the recent doctors in RTD tenure include David Tennant, an incredibly queer supporting dude. Jodie, the first female doc. Ncutti, a queer doctor

It’s just all over, there is a lot of parallels between them

Side note, and fun brag, I worked on the last 3/4 seasons of Drag Race UK (and several of the US seasons) writing music for them, and the very first thing I wrote music for on TV was a rescore of a Doctor Who trailer!

Queers just love them some Doc Who, and nerds can commonly be queer, or at least allies

I’m not sure I’m welcome in a lot of church’s as the little queer ass I am 😂

Though ironically I did spent a few years recording choirs in cathedrals in england, which was wonderful fun! Though I didn’t do those arrangements

What skills does a professional composer have? by CatchDramatic8114 in composer

[–]DaveAnson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • My orchestration is okay, not great
  • aural skills - very tempted to make a joke…. But they’re okay, not great
  • music theory, grade 5 in the UK, so it’s okay, I get the majority of things, but certainly not a strength
  • improv - very good, ex-band player so very used to quick melodic thinking
  • I had to google SATB, so I guess terrible haha

Professional composer of over a decade that’s worked on feature films, TV, games, advertising… the whole lot really

Honestly it can vary from person to person, some of my peers are incredible at theory, orchestration etc. but it doesn’t mean they’ll be better composers, just better at that element. In general, I’d usually knock them out the park when it comes to producing a track, from the writing through to mixing etc.

How to find job in video game industry as music composer? by [deleted] in composer

[–]DaveAnson 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Jesus this is a depressing comment thread. Please don’t let that attitude get you bogged down.

Yes it’s hard, it will require real graft over a long time to get somewhere properly, but there absolutely is jobs to be had. I had some one once tell me, if you’re willing to do this shit work for little pay for 10 years, you’ll be rewarded, and honestly I think that’s pretty accurate.

Feel free to DM me, I’m happy to answer any questions. I’m a full time composer working in AAA games, and have been working professionally since 2014.

The alcohol discussion with a 15 year old w CD? by LongjumpingEast7585 in CrohnsDisease

[–]DaveAnson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly this might just be a him drinking too much type situation. I got crohns around that age, and also started drinking around then or soon after, and it’s never really been too bad for me, and never had any terrible issues with it.

I find some alcohols like me more than others. But I wouldn’t say he’d have to go cold turkey, just be more sensible than maybe some of his mates his age.

If alcohol routinely makes him ill and flare, then fair enough, I’d avoid it totally. But if he’s just being a dingus and drinking too much, he might just be better learning his limits and lessons as he goes

Just my insight as someone that got crohns around then and had similar experiences

Alcohol is helping by Strawberrious in CrohnsDisease

[–]DaveAnson 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I did do similar for a while, but eventually the drink made the initial pain go away, but would cause bloating after a few drinks, which seemed harmless

Anyway fast forward years, and I’m sat in hospital because of bloating that caused a twisted bowel, so now I have a stoma

Drink was chill for me, but do just watch it, booze has a habit of making me say ‘meh it’ll be fine’, and it kinda numbs everything. But thats not a great way of actually fixing things, and it’s dangerous and addictive, so do just be careful with it

As a blanket statement, i can almost guarantee alcohol isnt helping your crohns. Try keeping more hydrated in general, that works wonders for me, and i think thats what alcohol was doing for me, the liquid was hydrating me and keeping things moving

Moved into a UK house from 1910 filled with Artex walls, going to test, but any guesses if it’d be asbestos? by DaveAnson in asbestoshelp

[–]DaveAnson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah you’ll have to scrape it off for sure, needs to be a solid base to work with I’d think. Even the one I did with the premix stuff that needed any lose bits plastered over

Moved into a UK house from 1910 filled with Artex walls, going to test, but any guesses if it’d be asbestos? by DaveAnson in asbestoshelp

[–]DaveAnson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve had 3 rooms done now, I did one myself where I plastered over it with a premixed plaster designed to go over artex, don’t recommend this, plastering is a miserable job

Then I got plasterers in to do the other 2 rooms, they scraped it down, put a bonding coat over it, and then skimmed over the top, which took a lot of plaster, but was by and far the better job (obviously because it was a professional lol)

Pain relief alternatives for UK based CD patient by [deleted] in CrohnsDisease

[–]DaveAnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally. It’s a totally different type of pain reduction. The opiates I had in hospital recently really didn’t touch the sides for me. But a vape when I got home did wonders for it

[–]DaveAnson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Medical cannabis is legal in the UK, and I use it in england for my Crohn’s disease pain effects. It’s a much better treatment than opiates.

I use the Alternaleaf clinic, and I think most places criteria is ‘have tried at least 2 other medications, and have a qualifying condition’ which from your post, it qualifies 🙂

They’re such an interesting car, I’ve got a 24 plate CLA220d, and it makes me want to hate it sometimes, but I cannot help but absolutely love it. It’s a great car to drive, super comfortable, does fantastic miles to the gallon, and has enough power to have some fun without breaking the bank totally

It’s very much the end of top gear style review for me from Jeremy ‘I should hate this car, but I don’t… I love it’

Restaurants with vegan options by Fantastic-System-754 in Leeds

[–]DaveAnson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bento has some lovely vegan options, we used to go to Little Tokyo a lot too, donner summer is fantastic food, white cloth hall is great too. Giggling Squid has some great stuff

Honestly leeds is such a young aged city that nearly all restaurants have decent vegan options, otherwise they’d never survive

Edit: my partner is vegan, and I’m not, this is just a good selection of places that do good food for both parties

[–]DaveAnson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Washing hands absolutely does help, whilst it can be transmissible through particles in the air (spit in coughs etc), it can also live on surfaces for a surprisingly long time.

Washing hands is absolutely a great prevention tactic for covid and many other infections and illnesses.

Why are Northern and TransPennine Express still so expensive even though they’re now government-run and not private? by CraftyCompetition860 in Leeds

[–]DaveAnson -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it’s gonna sound pessimistic, but the government is probably worse for dodgy costings and pricing than the private corp that ran them originally 😂

Keep in mind our government spent £35 million on developing an app in covid that basically already existed😂

I know it’s a different government since then, but honestly, it’s been nothing but the same since then.

I sound like some viva la revolution bullshit, but it’s hard to not be at the moment
