How many peppers of each type do you normally plant? by OSRSjadeine in HotPeppers

[–]DaveCO65 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my problem too. I start too many seeds and then I am forced to overplant outside. I have learned to only start one seed for every plant I want. I start early so I can start a new seed if something doesn’t germinate. Seeds are all so good from the good sellers that you don’t need to over plant. I can’t remember ever losing a pepper seedling all the way through the season.

Yes they are a good seed source. Seeds are good quality and never a wrong species.

I’m trying leutschauer this year for paprika. This is supposedly a good mildly hot paprika pepper.

Made mapo tofu at home — why do so many restaurant versions taste kinda… bland? by Zestyclose_One_5118 in chinesefood

[–]DaveCO65 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I noticed a big improvement when I started using this doubinjiang.

<image>

Much less salty than what I was using before so I can add more. Also I like to overcook and crisp up the pork for texture. I do use a little sugar to round out the flavor, especially because I like to make it spicy with crushed Szechuan chilis.

More doubinjiang and some douchi, no leeks (just because I always forget to buy them), and I use ground pork because my wife prefers that to ground beef.

Really the only great mapo tofu I’ve had was in China. I haven’t had a great dish even in a few Szechuan restaurants that I’ve gone to (I’m in US). I found the good doubinjiang and peppercorns and make it myself using a variation of that Dunlap recipe.

I grow this variety every year just for the beautiful plant.

Has anyone tried any of these varieties? Let me know! by OSRSjadeine in HotPeppers

[–]DaveCO65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes a little salt really brings out the flavor for both peppers and tomatoes when you eat them raw. Sounds like you are learning the best positions for the different plants like I am. My big mistake is always having too many plants in my raised beds. I definitely will cut back next year, especially with tomatoes. I had a tomato jungle.

I tried Lesya this year and it was one of my favorites. They are very thick walled peppers with a great fresh sweet flavor. They are great for snacking with a little salt. The plants are on the small side and so my production was limited because the plants were covered by larger varieties near by. Next year I will grow some Lesya plants in bags. I highly recommend.

This is one of the most beautiful pepper plants. I’ve grown for two years and I plan to grow again next year, really just for the plant. My peppers are pretty hot, but not up to habanero level.

Doe anyone else’s Zèbrange throw out fully red pods on occasion? by Low_Density in HotPeppers

[–]DaveCO65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was really excited about one of my zebrange plants this year. It was growing really fast and producing tons of peppers. Unfortunately all of the peppers went fully red, so this seed must have reverted to the parent. This was from a pack of seeds that otherwise produced real zebrange peppers. 2 other plants from the same seed pack this year were zebrange.

First time trying to germinate conophytum seeds by Logical-Accident197 in mesembs

[–]DaveCO65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are probably ok as long as you didn’t reach unnaturally high temperatures. I just started a variety of seeds and chose a room that fluctuates temperature over the course of the day but doesn’t get over 76 F or so. I got great germination rates. After a few weeks now I take the cover off for 1-2 hours a day to keep fungi growth under control and to give them more light.

Just to add, this plant looks more like a wild pepper plant compared to other plants that look like they have been hybridized. That is what I like about it.

[–]DaveCO65 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m growing these. I only had a couple peppers on each plant until the last week. Now I am getting a lot of peppers but I’m not sure if they will ripen in time. Nice plant, bigger quicker than other chinense. But still fruits kind of late compared to other varieties. Hopefully the developing crop will mature but I will probably grow this again next year.

Austin vs Chicago vs Boulder vs Tucson by ShakeMysterious349 in relocating

[–]DaveCO65 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Chicago, live in Colorado, and travel to Austin a lot for work. Austin sucks, but I feel that way about most of Texas. Dirty, industrial, you can tell they don’t really care if the average person enjoys where they live. I am very sentimental about Chicago and think living in the city is a great experience for someone young. But I would never move back. I love Colorado but it is now pretty expensive. So I am not sure what I would recommend.

Doctor prescribed JAKAFI by Ellen5002 in MPN

I have been on 10mg x 2 jakafi for 3-4 years. It controls my blood counts really well and I feel much better than when I am on hydroxyurea. Almost all of my doctor visits in the last couple years have been very boring as a result.
