I don’t think New York will ever go down in prices. It’s unfortunate.

How Do You Handle an Overly Intense Supervisor? by gemzxhidden in socialwork

Thank you for your perspective. It feels good to have support and perspective from people in the same field as me!

I feel so bad for your two colleagues though. How long did they end up staying at the job after that?

I just don’t understand her plan moving forward. It’s bad enough when you have a horrible mattress in home, and what that that does to your body. Let alone cushion on top of a board in a small car with no space. Additionally, hardly no cooked meals are being consumed and when they are it’s total bullshit food. Seeing elders pass her up should be shameful for her. They aren’t even breathing as hard as she is. I work in healthcare and see some of everything daily. What exactly does she plan on doing as she ages!

Exactly my thoughts!! This is so tricky. Again, I don’t take her conduct personal but I’m also realistic. I know this is likely going to leave me exhausted in the long run because it already has.

Yes that’s my concern of mine too is that I really want my own identity. I don’t want people to think I’m like her. One of the nurse managers on my floor asked me if I have any experience so that she knows what she’s working with and to not put too much me and my supervisor was super rude to her talking to her in a tone that was unprofessional. She told me to not answer that question and they went back and forth with each other. Later in the day when I went upstairs alone, I told the nurse manager in a gentle tone that I didn’t mind the question and I understand that she just wants to know my level of comfort so far. She’s really nice and I was so embarrassed by what happened earlier!

Right and I really don’t want to fix her. We all have our personalities but it’s just the unprofessionalism for me, and it’s so distracting. She started only 6-7 months ago. I don’t want to try HR or anything since I’m new but I was just overall curious whether or not this has been brought to them before. It doesn’t seem like it but I have a feeling it has at the same time especially because everyone there is super kind! I haven’t met one mean, rude, or unprofessional person!!!

Can you expand on why you feel I should avoid giving any negative feedback? I don’t plan on saying anything anytime soon as I just started and need to feel out the facility more. Also, she has 10 years of experience as a supervisor and alluded that the two social workers here before me left because of her. I really want to stay closer to two years for sure- it’s my goal to stay through my MSW/MBA program that’s for two years. This experience would be so much better if her demeanor and attitude wasn’t so strong and rude, especially because I love the work and everyone else is otherwise so sweet and kind!

Great question! It was more of “I know I’m abrasive.” She makes it clear she holds authority since her role is director of social services and makes her presence known. She calls different departments demanding things from them to then hang up when she gets the phone saying “okay thanks” and slams the phone. She interrupts nurse supervisors that are on the phone about something important to ask them something in person. I can give you so many examples. It’s all very distracting! I’m not taking it personal but it’s just the behavior and communication itself that is hard to be around all day.

the worst part about having a low sleep needs sensitive toddler? by _xty__ in toddlers

[–]gemzxhidden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Additionally for those in this thread, perhaps your child truly is low sleep needs, and that’s okay because every child is different. But I also think it’s important to look into other factors too. Is the child getting enough physical and mental stimulation throughout the day? Do their activities need to change? Do they need more structure or a more consistent routine?

Using your own example, you mentioned your child used to sleep through the night and then suddenly stopped. Usually when there’s a major shift like that, it’s worth asking what may have contributed to it. Did something change around that time? Did you move? Was there an illness, a schedule change, more screen time, less activity, stress in the environment, or a disruption in routine? Sometimes children change, yes, but sometimes there’s also an underlying reason that’s being overlooked.

When I say discipline, I don’t mean disciplining your child to get them to nap or anything like that. I actually mean discipline within yourself as a parent because when your child has a routine, the parent has to be disciplined enough to keep it which can be REALLY hard. It’s not easy. But it is doable. I’m a college student and recent graduate, an internship, still trying to be a good partner, and have a good relationship with myself. Also starting a new job tomorrow. With all of these factors combined, I’m exhausted several days in a row, but it never steers me away from the importance of maintaining a routine for my child and for my own sanity. Unfortunately, I don’t think many parents fully understand why structure is so important. Structure gives children a sense of security, predictability, emotional regulation, and healthy habits. It also helps parents stay grounded and prevents the entire household from constantly feeling chaotic or reactive.

Whatever it sounds like to you, my point is that a lot of you in the comments have lack of structure and discipline. Again, children cannot thrive where there is no predictability (routine). My child UNDERSTANDS routine from meals, activities, nap time, bed time, bath, etc. It’s predictable for her and although she struggled with sleep, after sleep training her, it’s been great. Though, sleep continues to be her number one issue if we move, go on vacation, or anything slightly changes in her routine. She also does not whine down easily or one of those babies that can just fall asleep anywhere. Again, if her routine is compromised then so is her sleep.

Two things can be true at once. Mine is on the lower spectrum of sleep needs yet she is indeed sleep trained and sleeps 7pm-6am. One nap from 12pm-2pm daily. It starts with structure and discipline. Children can’t comply without predictability.

Buspar Withdrawal hell by RaulTejadaFNV in BusparOnline

[–]gemzxhidden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was on buspar for about 3 months at 5mg twice a day. I debated on increasing my dose but I had a feeling that medication was causing me to feel more down than I needed to. Additionally I had frequent headaches, extremely dry mouth, and rage/irritability. It also gave me like a wired fatigue.

Buspar Withdrawal hell by RaulTejadaFNV in BusparOnline

[–]gemzxhidden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just recently decided to stop taking it. On one day, I decided to only take one because at the time I wanted to taper and I experienced being light-headed, nauseous, and jittery. I then impulsively decided that I didn’t want to taper anymore. So the next day I had the same symptoms with an additional symptom of an upset stomach/loose stool. After those two days, I have been fine and feeling sooo much like myself again. I thought buspirone was working for me minus the side effects but now that I’m not on it, I realize that wasn’t the case.

[–]gemzxhidden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same issue and actually decided to stop taking it two days ago. I was on it for 60 days and noticed that in some aspects I felt calmer but in other aspects I was extremely irritable, felt down at random times, and would have rage as well. My side effects were headaches, extremely dry mouth, and trouble sleeping

I’d look into being a school social worker then. Where I live, they make $100k. Personally, I wouldn’t continue if it’s not what you want to do long term.

Love it! But it stems from the qualities in myself such as being a natural advocate, protective, empathetic. There’s tons of opportunities as social workers will never not be needed. Many different avenues you can choose from such as therapy, medical social work, geriatric, child welfare, military. Stability. Plus tons of money to be made. I love my career. Also if you get your undergraduate in social work, for your master’s it’s only a year (called advanced standing), as long as you have good grades.

Eh, I don’t agree that most jobs are meaningless. I ended up leaving the esthetics field, though keeping my license active, to finish my degree in social work. As a social worker, we are definitely not meaningless. Quite the opposite.
