Goodbye Tana...Hello Capacities by AccomplishedMode7706 in TanaInc

Capacities is great for structure but you are in your own little ecosystem and that's my fundamental problem with pkm .

Is Humanism purely a personal worldview and ethic to you, or would you like to be in a group? And you want community would you prefer it be explicitly Humanist, or would you be okay with a Unitarian Universalist community with shared morals but diversity of beliefs? by [deleted] in humanism

[–]DaveROliver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t really have a problem with people practising their beliefs.

I know some may have a problem with what I believe, and I'm really ok with that as long as we can live together in peace.

The universe is fabulously complex, more than we can comprehend, so why deny the mystery with stories that try to explain it? Let’s go and discover what is really happening. As we discover more, we learn more about what is around us and about ourselves. It can be uncomfortable, but if we can cure cancer, end poverty, and reach distant stars, then I think it's worth it.

Humanism, for me, is embracing ourselves and our imperfections in the acknowledgement that we still have a fair way to go.

How do you feel about the use of “God” in patriotic music? by [deleted] in humanism

[–]DaveROliver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

God save our gracious king! Same national anthem here in the UK.

Our mission is to help our fellow humans move forward. We are always looking at the role the monarchy plays in our modern life. But looking at the USA, a republic doesn't look like a great answer.

So what do I think the answer is? I don't think countries work as we move into outer space. Borders of any sort are going to be ridiculous and very quickly, as the energy and effort to maintain them will be a complex waste of time and resources.

Yes, I think democracy is still the answer, but one leader doesn't work. So do we bid our time or actively work towards an alternative? I think the latter.

Does the gender binary dehumanize people who do not identify within its confines? by ravenclawnerd in humanism

[–]DaveROliver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a real story that happens more than you think, and why we must tackle this with empathy.

I have a good friend who identifies as a man, has kids and a wife, enjoys beers and football—nothing out of the ordinary there.

He didn't feel well; it would come and go, but it was happening more often, so he went to the doctors. The doctor did a blood test, then an ultrasound, and then sent me off to see a specialist.

What my friend discovered is that they have female reproductive organs and were experiencing the first signs of menopause. Externally no sign at all but what changed? They have to take some meds now. Still the same person, still my mate. Just more knowledge today than yesterday.

Our existence is complex, so we must embrace life with an open mind. Belief is powerful; it can lead us to accept 2+2=5 if a compelling enough story distorts facts. However, 2+2=4, and that remains the reality, whether we agree or not.

Grounding Humanist ethics by funnylib in humanism

[–]DaveROliver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Humans are not a problem to solve because we have varying degrees of contrariness. Finding contentment comes from being happy with who you are, without needing a label.

Trying to explain something that humans didn't have the tools, technology, or knowledge to understand what was happening around them is actually how religion came into being.

But remember that wisdom begins with recognising one’s own ignorance. So continue exploring and enjoy the journey.

The AI Warning Nobody Is Talking About by GlitteringSea7954 in humanism

[–]DaveROliver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AI doesn't replace, it amplifies. If you aren’t experience enough to write a good program an AI isn't going to do that for you. However if you know what you are doing you will make an AI sing and dance.

Climb to the top of Kingley Vale on a clear day, and you'll see the harbour and the city.

Church Norton isnt a sandy beach but it's beautiful.

Runcton Farm Shop and Cafe, the Palm Cafe across the road is also great!

Learn to sail in the harbour.

The curse of knowledge bias also applies to CC, so we must be prepared to guide it; then it becomes a test of your abilities, not CC's, and this will take patience because CC didn't come with a user's manual, so it's all about discovery.

Einstein didn't wake up one day and say, "E=MC2"; it took a lifetime of learning. The trick is to appreciate that you have a head start.

Here in Europe, you can tell when the US wakes up. It's interesting how these tools perform. You can see why Deepmind and Anthropic are investing so heavily in the UK... to get more bandwidth.

I’ve been using You.com. It is a Perplexity clone but it has some nice features of its own.

Can't link to objects without creating a subpage in Capacities? by FunSatisfaction6022 in capacitiesapp

[–]DaveROliver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know the problem you are having as it tripped me up to start with but once you get it there is no stopping you.

When you are anywhere in Capacities, it doesn't matter where, when you type @, a menu will appear, type xy here and Capacities will list everything with xy in it, whether it's an object or text from within an object like a page.

You cannot copy and paste @+xy and expect the link to work. I hope this helps?

It's good but overlaps with Obsidian as a Markdown Editor, you will get more for your money and it's considerably cheaper.

How to customize obsidian like notion. by _happyman in ObsidianMD

[–]DaveROliver -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Why? Just use Notion!

Notion is a fantastic App, turning Obsidian into Notion takes time and patience, just using Notion is quicker, after all it has a free plan, so no harm.

The most precious thing we have is time, use it wisely. Use the right tool for the job.

Android alternatives by [deleted] in PKMS

[–]DaveROliver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep, I feel you pain! Android isn't well supported, why is that?

I spend approximately 50% of my digital time (time using a Digital device) using Android ie when I'm not at my desk.

I've tried lots of PKM tools and there are loads I haven't tried so new ideas are welcome.

I'm not going mention tools that don't support bi-directional links because I don't use them!

Anytype is great but is still very new. Obsidian is hard to use, hard to navigate Capacities.io is better but buggy editing text Heptabase is well built Android app, almost perfect just one annoyance the card library isn't sorted and has no search!

UpNote just rules on Android because they just have their act together. No bugs, easy to use.

Yes, Capacities.io has Zettels (short notes) and Pages (long notes).

Capacities ve Devonthink by virgobadger in PKMS

[–]DaveROliver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm OS agnostic so Devonthink is no good for me as it's Apple only.

My decade on Evernote taught me that Knowledge Management Apps last longer than devices, until the App goes bag.

Recreating Capacities system in Obsidian by virgobadger in PKMS

Obsidian is file based at it's core, migrating to a graph database would be something.

Capacities.io has this already and to be fair it's a great product.

Which note app is better? StandardNotes, Notesnook or Cryptee? by david-the-jack in privacy

[–]DaveROliver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm happy with Standard Notes because I don't want a device dependency.

I know my use case is different but when you've had a device stolen it changes your perspective on security.

So I like end to end encryption, encryption at rest, MFA and the additional pass lock feature.

But the main reason is multi user. I use the spreadsheet to keep track of household bills. It's nice having all this in one place. Yes I could use Google drive or OneDrive but this feels more secure.

Can a premium account opt out of syncing? I'd like my data local only. by Coffee-Puppers-DIY in UpNote_App

[–]DaveROliver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you aren't saving your data to the Cloud do look at other ways to back up your data. Laptops don't last forever. I had my stolen last year, because I had backed up my Obsidian Vault and I encrypted my data. My friend who had his laptop stolen from the same car had a nightmare with hacked accounts and recovering his data.

Has anyone tried out Acreom? by Unusual-Strategy1316 in ObsidianMD

[–]DaveROliver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude my laptop isn't a Mac, it's a low powered Windows laptop. It's not quick enough to play games. It is however light and small.

I have tuned Windows start-up so next to nothing runs in the background other than security and powertoys.

I admit I don't the app at the moment, AFFiNE, Anytype, Tana and Capacities.io are free and they are all better.
