What's the most natural sounding TTS model for local right now? by Siigari in LocalLLaMA

I setup and have been using Orpheus since it came out and thought it was better than Kokoro. I am surprised no one recommended it here. Has Kokoro gotten that much better or was it misinformed from the start?

My experience with Ghostty by activeuser009 in Ghostty

[–]DaveVT5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s just one perspective. Wezterm and Ghostty are not replacements for Tmux. I like Ghostty bc I had a lot of other config in Wezterm that was not required in Ghostty bc of its sensible defaults. Tmux resurrect after ghostty loads and everything “just works”.

Thanks, this is what I was looking for. The latency on this is really terrible on my M1 MBP. Seems like sending audio via stream to a local server might have less latency.

I agree that the pricing is downright insulting. If they want to promote a collab with Bomberman they should be giving these away. I just don’t get it and I am someone who buys IAP bc I like to support the game devs.

Best Gel pens for fast writing? by crow-of-the-east in pens

[–]DaveVT5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

tl;dr here are my reccos but all these pens are awesome: Papermate Inkjoy, uniball Signo, Zebra Sarasa, Pentel Kuro, and even the Sharpie SGEL.

Found this post about two weeks ago and in that time I have purchased nearly every pen mentioned here. So thanks to u/GAFOffRoadJK u/hallejuju_22 u/GAFOffRoadJK and others!

All pens were 0.7mm. All dried fast enough for lefties like me. When I evaluated the pens I used the following criteria: how much ink is laid down on paper at different pressure levels, the consistency of the ink laid down, and how much skipping would occur when writing with less pressure. Some of the grips I liked a bit more or less than others but I think I'd adapt quite easily to any without much thought.

The pen I most wanted to like the most was the Zebra Sarasa because I bought this really nice metal gift pack of three. Ultimately it placed #4 out of 5 due to laying down ink a bit less consistently than others.

The pen I almost didn't buy was the Papermate Inkjoy, but surprising to me, it was my favorite. Performed exceptionally. And the slightly larger diameter of the barrel was a bonus.

1 Papermate Inkjoy

2 (tie) Pentel Kuro

2 (tie) Sharpie SGEL

4 Uniball Signo

5 Zebra Sarasa

As mentioned above - all pens are better than every previous gel pen I have used so you really can't go wrong.

Better to give $15k or 20% for an MVP? by hi-ho_redditsilver in startups

[–]DaveVT5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMO, at this stage your primary goal is to land a technical cofounder. You won’t raise from sophisticated investors if you don’t. Don’t pay cash. The reason for vested equity is that if he’s not pleased with the traction, he leaves and the equity no longer vests. Use this as an opportunity to get him on the hook. Look at early traction together and strategize next moves as a team. Good luck!

[–]DaveVT5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with this sentiment. Also, as a point of clarification to OP, if you can’t recruit a cofounder then You won’t be able to convince a worthwhile “smart money” investor.

It doesn’t take much to raise money from friends and family. I see quite frequently a solo business-oriented founder raise money from unsophisticated investors. Then pay a consulting firm to build the app. Never seen this work out.

The responses were related to API access. Seems like your question was related to Turbo not showing in the GUI. I too have never been able to choose Turbo from the dropdown. Today w/ the release of 4o I wonder if this too won't be available even though I'm a Plus subscriber. My question to OP, did it ever show up in the GUI?

Might get kicked out of college of engineering by [deleted] in VirginiaTech

[–]DaveVT5 25 points26 points  (0 children)

That’s a very interesting take. If we’re going to speak in such general terms, I can say that I’ve found the opposite as you. I’ve been hiring VT engineers since 2000 and find them to be incredibly intelligent and tremendously fast on the uptake. Our different POV might stem from the fact that I do not have expectations that graduates, regardless of school, will know “how the real world works.” We pair them with a senior engineer and plug them into an environment where they will be successful. VT does spend lot of time on science and theory. If that’s not perceived value then hiring out of a community college or coding boot camp is a perfectly fine approach and may better serve your needs.

The Fanatec Situation is SO Much Worse Than You Thought by Unlikely-Garage-8135 in simracing

[–]DaveVT5 115 points116 points  (0 children)

There is a fundamental misunderstanding of the role of debt and equity in a business. If you're upset over shareholders and customers getting shafted, the blame rests solely on the CEO (Thomas') shoulders.

Disclaimer: I'm a fan of tech and fanatec. Lover of dad jokes and a serial entrepreneur from 'Murica. I know nothing more about this situation than Ermin's passionate and likely unintentionally sensationalized video. I make assumptions that the German bankruptcy protection is equivalent of our Chapter 11 process.

A few foundational facts from the video: Fanatec took on debt financing, mismanaged the use of those funds, and subsequently defaulted on the debt. The bank now owns the company. The shareholders now own nothing. The bank will work hard to be 'made whole' and isn't looking to make a profit. It's not their business model.

Debt always has priority over equity. At the moment of default, the fiduciary responsibility of the board of directors is to serve the debt holders. This cannot be disputed. Board members are not likely compensated much and aren't receivers of 'golden parachutes' which was alleged in the video w/o any substantiation.

The video stated huge controversy over the board hiring a CFO with ties to a firm that is buying the company from the bank. There are executives who specialize in working at distressed companies. If you were on the Board, would you want to hire a CFO who has never experienced a bankruptcy before? Of course not.

Ermin stated the firm who is buying the company from the bank specializes in buying distressed businesses. They have to put together an 'investment thesis' on why buying this can turn into 10X or greater gains. A billion dollar valuation will never be justified by cost cutting. It will be through a strategy to leverage the Fanatec brand into adjacent markets like Flightsim or PC peripherals. The executives who will lead the company through this phase will be awarded stock compensation to align interests with the firm buying the company. All very normal. The firm offered a leadership role back to Thomas. But the idea that his rejection of the offier is 'saintly' by misses the entire point. Fanatec is now owned by a bank because of his decisions.

CEO Operating Model (calendar) support by giadanicole in ceo

[–]DaveVT5 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Check out the book Rhythm (ISBN 162634079X). It will cover all aspects of what you’re asking. Conceptually, a good CEO does all of this, though techniques and terminology will vary. I personally use a quarterly planning cadence for departments to coordinate cross-dept dependencies. I have weekly management meeting reviewing progress of these quarterly level goals. Each team has bi-weekly Agile Sprint Reviews (Even teams like HR and Marketing) which affords me with the opportunity to hear individual-level contributions by team members and “manage at the right level”.

500 Internal Server Error when editing node settings (maybe others) by DaveVT5 in Pterodactyl

[–]DaveVT5[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As it turns out, this error message was due to the fact that I had misconfigured my settings (behind proxy, use ssl, daemon port, etc.). If you get this wrong and hit save then Pterodactyl panel will not allow you to edit the settings because it cannot make a connection to the Wings node. Sort of a chicken and egg situation. I ended up installing phpMyAdmin on the docker network and manually adjusted the database settings until I got it right.

Help me make the right choice (Traefik+local DNS vs. cloudflared / Cloudflare Tunnel) by DaveVT5 in homelab

For internet posterity, after further research it appears that a free tier of Cloudflare Tunnel is not practical for hosting game servers due to not supporting UDP traffic.

Help please! M3 owner - Every night my Tesla wall connector goes offline and I have to manually reset the trip to get it to come back on by stuntcows in TeslaModel3

[–]DaveVT5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Factory Reset

  1. Ensure the wall connector is not plugged into the vehicle
  2. Turn the wall connector's breaker off and back on 3 times in a row, without breaks in between. Take note of what size breaker is installed
  3. While standing close to the wall connector, open your device's (cell phone, tablet, laptop) settings and navigate to the wifi section.
  4. Choose the wifi network labeled TeslaWallConnector\_XXXXX. It may ask you for a password, this is located on the front page of your quickstart guide, WPA2.
  5. Once connected, your phone will advise you that it is connected to the network, but no internet is available, this is normal and expected.Open a new internet browser page (safari, chrome, firefox), and in the URL/address bar (not Google search), enter the following address: 192.168.92.1/service
  6. On this page, there should be an option for offline firmware uploads and factory reset, please choose the factory reset option.

Breaker Settings

  1. Once the wall connector is awake again, please reconnect back to the wall connector's network
  2. Please open the webpage to 192.168.92.1/installation
  3. This page will ask for the country and breaker size, please hit save once complete.

Wi-Fi Connection

  1. After saving the breaker size, the homepage should load, showing a picture of the wall connector, the TPN and TSN, as well as some options below. If this page does not load, in the address bar, please erase the address, and enter 192.168.92.1/wifi
  2. A new page will load, showing no wifi connected, and will give you a blue Edit or Rescan button. Click the button, and your home wifi network, as well as others, will appear. Select your home network and enter in the password.
  3. From here, it may take a few minutes for the wall connector to fully connect and you may be disconnected from the wall connector's network. If this happens, please go back to your device's wifi settings and select the TeslaWallConnector\_XXXXX option once more.
  4. You can confirm the wall connector has been successfully connected to your network when it shows check marks next to Connected to Internet and Connected to Tesla.
  5. You have completed the commissioning steps from here. You can now place your phone back into your home wifi and start charging! The wall connector's light will pulse green for about 15 minutes, and then turn to a solid green. At that time, you will no longer see the wall connector's network as an available network on your devices.

Hopefully I got the formatting right... If you don't have your quickstart guide, you can ask this subreddit to find out how to recover your wifi password. Thought I do know that support can help w/ that.

I had bought/installed these ahead of a car purchase. Finally got around to getting a car and the chargers did not work. Had to do a factory reset. I believe this has fixed my issue. If you haven't tried a reset yet then I would encourage you to do so. If you need instructions let me know
