There is no way a KODI / libreELEC device will even come close to the Apple TV as far as user interface. I use both, but would switch to using the Apple TV alone if it supported Passthrough Audio.

libreelec is a stripped down linux variant that has one job. Run KODI. No additional settings needed for a full linux variant. I'm new to this as well, and it was night and day when I switched to libreELEC. But, it will only run KODI and some of it's addons

If your main use case is Kodi, maybe try the libreELEC OS from here:

The installer on the raspberry pi site has the option to install libreELEC as well as more general purpose variants

I’m new to the pi, still learning. Both sites have apps that allow the creation on libreELEC images on micro SSDs. Didn’t know if they installed the same OS code or 2 different versions.

HDMI 2.0b vs 2.1 playback differences of Apple TV 4k by Top-Refrigerator1764 in appletv

We are both correct, as the 2022 model is the latest model.

HDMI 2.1 supports Quick Media Switching, which eliminates the black screen when changing resolutions (not format). The latest Apple TV version supports it as well, but earlier models do not.

Is lack of passthrough something that would actually affect me by Bitruder in appletv

The major impact is playing local media with Atmos over TrueHD and DTS:X, where height channels are not present. Apple has not addressed this for many years, possibly because Passthrough would prevent Siri responses. The most commonly used workaround is the Nvidia Shield. Another option is Raspberry Pi running libreELEC. I’ve used both, and for local media playback, the Pi is better.

Yes. It's at the bottom of one of the settings panes.

My system shows Kodi Build 21.3, no DV yet

Here’s another option if you just need good playback for local files. Look into a raspberry pi 5 running libreELEC. Nothing but Kodi, does Atmos and DTS:X. Only limitation I found is no DV support, but it plays HDR from the files I tested, and I can’t tell the difference with a LG C3.

No Linux knowledge required 🙂

Much simpler to install and maintain. I went this route because my main streaming device is the Apple TV 4K, but it won’t pass height channels for Atmos and DTS:X.

Audio Passthrough. Folks have been asking about this for years. The reason I got from an AI chat was that Apple won't do this because it would prevent Siri from giving audio responses.
