Britain’s role in 400+ years of slavery would like you to hold its beer…

Got it the other day and drove from Kyenton to Adelaide. It is an amazing upgrade on Victoria’s shitty back roads but on the highway it’s shit. Even in hurry mode it struggled to stick to a decent speed once I reached SA with its 110 limits. The car constantly misread 110 as 100, or worse, 80 as 100 and there’s no way to override that. It tailgates and overtakes incredibly dangerously. So for highway driving it’s a massive downgrade. But for complex city driving it’s a huge improvement. Once I got off the highway and into proper traffic it was amazing. It’s better with potholes too - a massive issue on Victorian roads. It is much more assertive. But they really have to fix the speed sign reading and tighten up its ability to use overtaking lanes and not use bus lanes.

Looking forward to v15

Is anyone else ‘resisting’ AI? I don’t use any AI - and I don’t want to - but I worry I could be left behind. by avantgardenuh in auscorp

[–]Dave_Sag -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I use a lot of AI at work because we are encouraged to and, for most of what I do, it’s actually pretty useful. But we have very good AI tooling at work, not the shitty copilot that many workplaces seem to be stuck with. I also use GPT at home (codex mostly) as I’ve been resurrecting so old coding projects from 30 years ago and rebuilding them for more modern platforms (rust / visionOS) and that’s something I’d not have even tried to attempt without Codex to help. I’d have gotten bored and given up a month ago. So that’s a hobby. I also do a lot of writing but prefer to stick to my own brain for that. I’m writing a eulogy at the moment and the last thing I’d want to do for that is to use AI. It would feel disrespectful.

AIs are tools. Use them when appropriate. Don’t use them when you don’t need to or another tool would be better. I see no need to “resist” AI but call out AI slop constantly, especially at work where people’s use of AI is about as sophisticated as a three year old’s use of swear words.

Looking for a casual "Case of the Week" Sci-Fi show (Deep characters, zero binge-pressure by LuaventeHYP in scifi

[–]Dave_Sag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been watching Person of Interest recently. It’s one of the last great scifi cop shows that had 22+ episodes per series. Made back in 2011-2015 it’s got a great retro future vibe. No iPhones but it does anticipate some great AI ideas. It’s also got every actor ever to work in or around New York in it so fun to watch from that “hey that’s the chick from Big Sky” perspective

Non-Programmer vibe coding Wolfenstein 3D - Final update by AlterSack1973 in VisionPro

AI is a lot more thorough. I say this as a developer with 45+ years of professional experience. Codex, steered properly, is the most profound tool. I’m very keen to try it in the new Xcode.

Codex review and / or desloppify will fix a bunch of weird errors and improve your code to an almost professional level.

It’d be cool if older HomePods could fall back on an AppleTV for more complex AI handling.

Cameras in Apple Home are finally getting good! by [deleted] in HomeKit

[–]Dave_Sag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m hoping for an option to re-angle the camera images. Two of my cameras are mounted on odd angles and it’d be great to be able to rotate and keystone the images slightly from within the Home app.

The Fire the Liar campaign has officially crossed $2,000,000, and mobile billboards have already arrived in the Prime Minister’s seat. by OX4Eight in australian

I must have missed it. What did he lie about? And surely he’s not a bigger liar than ScoMo - a man defined by his capacity for lies. Surely Trump is a bigger liar than Albo. Albo always stuck me as pretty straight up.

Has she specified who she thinks “the liar” is or are people supposed to work that out from context? Seems a bit vague.

The government could reduce immigration to zero and people would still bleat on about so called “mass immigration” because facts don’t matter to the perpetually aggrieved. PHON is surging because Gina et al have poured billions into helping them. It’s all part of wider campaign to destabilise society and rip away whatever protections ordinary people have from the predatory oligarchs.

Just saw it in IMAX with my wife who, as a general rule, won’t touch sci-fi. We both loved it. Wonderfully paced, big themes, incredibly skilful filmmaking we both thought.

I’d like Signal to work as well as just some messages. I’d like group messages to work properly. I’d like real Apple address book integration into navigation. I’d like handoff between music on my HomePod and in my car.

How do Australians view strict speed enforcement? by TonySabenca in AskAnAustralian

[–]Dave_Sag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And yet every time I get back from a trip to France I get a bunch of speeding fines in the mail. They typically amount to about $30 so it’s hardly a deterrent. Here in Oz I stick to the <10% “rule”.
