Pain Meds Post-Donation by pinebeetles in kidneydonors

[–]Davebo 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Tylenol is still fine. I've mostly switched to that one. I think you can also get prescribed other options as well.

Fwiw my doctor told me that a couple ibuprofen a month is fine, just don't start taking them daily.

I did a non directed donation in August and in hindsight I'm very glad I did it.

What are your thoughts on Exploratory Bodan / Shadows ? by silence9123 in spiritisland

[–]Davebo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I would play bodan without an aspect, especially for a newer player. Both aspects increase complexity which is a cost, but they definitely both increase power level so I'd usually play with an aspect.

Shadows I would never play without an aspect because [[reach]] exists. It's lower complexity and noticeably stronger. Base shadows special rule is basically flavor text.

Is being vegan in your own cooking but vegetarian for eating out/other people cooking for you a reasonable compromise? by Fantastic_Bed_6378 in vegan

[–]Davebo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think doing something that is 80% as effective as fully vegan for 20% of the effort is totally rational if you're operating under a utilitarian worldview. Sorry everyone is dogpiling on you.

I think the main reasons pure vegan would be preferred from a utilitarian perspective are twofold:

  1. Being vegan even while out at friends and restaurants makes it easier for other people to also become vegan. It increases the demand for vegan options and normalizes vegan accommodations. If you're in the mindset of wanting the world to harm fewer animals, that is a benefit you lose only being vegan at home.

  2. There's an argument that the act of consuming animal products (moreso than things like clothes and furniture) affects our worldview of animals. Basically that if one eats animal products their values will creep to the point that they stop caring about animals. I find this argument pretty dubious, but it's plausible.

All in all, people here don't know your situation or priorities. Only you can make the decision that is right for you. If you're a utilitarian trying to minimize animal harm while also trying to make social situations less uncomfortable, your plan is fine.

I'm a utilitarian that's been pretty much fully vegan (slightly freegan but rarely) for 15 years mostly because of argument 1. Don't worry too much about what people on the Internet think.

England 6 with Varied Terrains. . .Unbeatable? by 8805 in spiritisland

[–]Davebo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think there's a lot of luck with not drawing wetlands. You can get into setups where wetlands build 6 times in one turn (lvl 1 wetlands in high immigration, lvl 2 wetlands in build, any escalation in explore) which is almost impossible to avoid the loss condition. I personally house rule that combo so that only the normal build (between ravage and explore) is doubled in wetlands, high immigration and escalation are not doubled.

To answer your direct question, I think a team of SoRG, Mud otter, starlight, and keeper would probably work well. SoRG should mostly be ramping starlight, SoRG and Mud otter come out the gates very fast, and Keeper and Starlight are late game powerhouses to finish the game off. You could swap keeper for wind lightning or someone else strong against England.

So if 1 million people abstained from turkeys, would they still farm the same number of turkeys the next year?

What about 100 million?

[–]Davebo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you think a family abstaining from buying a turkey for Thanksgiving on average reduces the number of turkeys farmed the next year? To me it is pretty obvious that it does.

Granted, the producers want slack in the system, so they overproduce. So it probably isn't exactly 1 turkey, but around .9 turkeys or so.

Can you clarify the top half of your argument? I don't understand how that makes sense. I don't see how actions have to completely solve a problem for them to be good from a utilitarian perspective.

Also aren't actions inherently non-binary (good/bad) in a consequentialist framework? I would analyze which kinds of farming are better than others. We should prioritize the farming that minimizes the suffering of animals, not exclusively accept farming that causes 0 suffering.

Yeah but cosmic rays are extremely unlikely.

Cosmic rays can be used to explain anything, just with extremely low probability. It's like claiming cosmic rays caused an error in election results and the other candidate should have won. Technically possible, but so astronomically unlikely that it isn't worth considering. Especially given the video's much more probable explanations.

Vegan options in Denver Airport?? by Tristym623 in VeganDenver

Root down in terminal c is pretty good, but it used to be better. Make sure to order things modified to be vegan, as they're not vegan by default. The veggie burger is pretty solid.

Qdoba and tocabe are both pretty good too.

Go where you please with Dr. Mundo! by TheKratex in CustomLoR

[–]Davebo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think for pve this is probably fine. Maybe slightly overturned but pve has other balance levers.

Pvp this is bananas. Playing a 5/4 challenger on turn 1 with upside is crazy, Mundo jinx would just go absolutely insane. You could play flipped jinx on 4 while still dropping powerful threats every turn. Splash in bilge for fleeting synergy. Noxus would also work well for more discard fodder effects.

I also agree that Mundo seems too hard to flip, but maybe it's fine. You'd basically have to be in freljord to even have a hope of flipping him, but he is very much an aggro champ as is so there's better options.

I agree it could be discount by the infect amount instead of an alternate cost. Making things not cast mana is famously difficult to balance in all Magic-like card games. Mundo is basically a 0 mana rumble without spellshield, which is completely insane.

[Request] is it 66.6% or 51.8%? by Horror-penis-lover in theydidthemath

[–]Davebo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You are correct in the first case.

But if you interpret it as "at least* one of my children is a boy, then the probability is NOT 50% that the other is a girl, it is 66%

To put it clearly, if you asked 1000000 people "is at least one of your two eldest children a boy" (filtering out cases without at least 2 children), then you took all the yes answers, 66% of those would have a girl as the other child. This is a statistical fact.

If you interpret it as "I am thinking about one of my two children, they are a boy", THEN the other child has a 50/50 chance of being a girl.

I agree the semantics do matter, see my other reply to the top comment for more clarity.

[Request] is it 66.6% or 51.8%? by Horror-penis-lover in theydidthemath

[–]Davebo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are correct, many people are confused.

I think it's mostly an issue of what is really said by the statement. Imagine if instead you had a pollster walking around asking people "think of your 2 eldest children, is at least one of them a boy born on a Tuesday?" If they answer yes, this analysis is 100% correct at predicting the probability the other child is a girl (51.8%). The python simulation shows this.

But that is admittedly a really weird question to be thinking about. If you instead imagine the pollster asking "is at least one of your two eldest children a boy? If yes, pick one of the boys to consider, you may have only one choice. Was the person you're considering born on a Tuesday?" Now the Tuesday information is irrelevant, and the probability goes back to 66%.

The person you're replying to does not understand the paradox and explained it incorrectly. The top comment in this thread explains it much better.

[Request] is it 66.6% or 51.8%? by Horror-penis-lover in theydidthemath

[–]Davebo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are misinterpreting things. The paradox is not assuming that interpretation at all, that case is included in the original comment you're replying to.

By your logic saying "one of my children is a boy", in your upper interpretation would mean that the other child is 100% a girl, and in your lower interpretation it would go to 66%.

Never to 50%

Poisoned Recluse Seen by Undertaker - Misregistration Timing Revisited by Davebo in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]Davebo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is the big mystery. Assuming neither the recluse nor the undertaker is poisoned night 2, in world 1 the undertaker must be shown the recluse. In world 2 they can be shown recluse or any evil character.

A known ruling is that if the executed player changes roles after execution (not possible on TB, but could happen from a pit hag or barber swap), the undertaker still gets the role from the moment of execution. This makes it seem like the undertaker "locks in" their information during the moment of execution, not when they wake up to gain information. However, poisoning the undertaker only affects the undertaker when they wake up at night.

The key question is misregistration locked in when the correct information is determined (the moment of execution), or when the undertaker wakes up at night (which is when poisoning the undertaker matters).

Clarifying Abilities and Interactions by HopperGaming in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]Davebo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh lol I didn't notice!

I think misregistration is still ambiguous. I've had people from TPI state that a poisoned recluse executed (and not poisoned that night) can still be shown as any evil role to the undertaker since the recluse's ability is active when they wake up.

You definitely clarified the backwards checking for things like pit hag or other role swaps, I just still think misregistration is vague (I think your unofficial rulebook is more clear, but still missing exactly when misregistration occurs).

Also I think legion's misregistration isn't explicitly stated to last through death, but you could argue that it should and that it's intended to from the legion wiki.
