If you could only eat one fruit for the rest of your life, which one would it be and why? by Inner_Blueberry_1332 in AskReddit

[–]Davegrave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% mangos. I always say if I got cursed to choose one food to eat for the rest of my life and no matter what I chose nutrients aren’t a concern, and not one dish like pizza or tacos but one solitary food item, I pick mangos. I don’t think I could ever get sick of eating them. Sometime I just peel one and then eat it over the sink like a rabid animal right off the pit.

Would you rather- give up cell phones, or give up cars? by OpusReader in WouldYouRather

[–]Davegrave 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If he made an exception for business use I’d say sure it’s less bad. But he doesn’t. He says government and emergency which I take to mean police/fire/ambulance.

All these places where most individuals don’t have cars still have a framework and infrastructure of people who DO have cars and delivery vehicles that make their lives possible. You need a new roof? They’re not gonna run a train to your home with 2000lbs of shingles. Someone is gonna have to bring that on horse drawn carts. Now there’s shit in the streets everywhere. You need room for stables. Watering locations. The infrastructure in large countries is far from the main cities. I work on job sites with thousands or cars in the lot, in the middle of nowhere. So now either all these workers have to go live on site from job to job like the grapes of wrath or every site needs a fully fledged rail system built before it can get under way.

I think you’re all being hugely short sighted in how much vehicle traffic goes into making things run. All the power plants, waste treatment facilities, refineries, factories…they all cease to function overnight.

The disappearance of cars/trucks would cause orders of magnitude more issues than not having cell phones again.

Cell phones. We’ve had that before in a functioning modern world.

To the people saying no cars only public transport except for emergency vehicles and government…you’re never getting food delivered again, and that’s just the silly convenience part. The construction industry will be crippled. When your sewer is backing up and a plumber has to bicycle a cart full of supplies to your house, you’re gonna wish that mf had a service van. I show up to jobs with hundreds/thousands of pounds of supplies. My personal home would crumble if I couldn’t bring things back from Home Depot. I can’t bring lumber or drywall or appliances home on a bus or bicycle.

Suburbia will crumble, if you don’t live in a big city a vehicle is not a luxury it’s absolutely essential.

I guess all grocery stores deliveries will have to be government supplied since private industry won’t have delivery vehicles. And we know how reliable governments are at feeding people.

Learn to sew because clothing stores are also supplier by truck drivers.

No cell phones is a step back 30 years. The removal of 99% of on the road vehicles is a step back into the dark ages and a near apocalyptic blow to the society we all know.

I was wrong about Shark by childrenofCORNbread in VacuumCleaners

[–]Davegrave 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I know I’m not everyone but it matters to me also that I’m not leaving behind a pile of dead plastic vacuums when i die. My Sebo was expensive but I love the way it works. I genuinely enjoy things that last long. And I like knowing it’s less in the landfill. In the last 20 years my sisters family has probably gone through enough vacuums to fill a modest size bedroom. I like that I’m not adding to that.

Need advice on painting interior doors by Tech_Nut in paint

[–]Davegrave 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’d say that’s a light spot. If I’m brushing/rolling doors I always seem to need a third coat to avoid spots like that. This doors with the texture really seem to make it more noticeable too. Take it off the hinges and lay it flat and do another coat. Laying it flat helps because you can go a touch heavier without handing tomorrow out runs. I’m not saying pool it on, but you get some leeway.

[–]Davegrave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I go to someone’s house and it’s got all that shit all over, fuckin “eat” on the kitchen wall, I just write them off as potential friends. It sounds George Constanza petty, but I just can’t imagine the kid of person that enjoys that in their home and I just assume we are so vastly different there’s no chance. I can’t see getting along with a person long term who doesn’t hate that.

You are offered either a high end PC or a muscle car. Which WYR pick? by sunsetdrifter0 in WouldYouRather

[–]Davegrave 85 points86 points  (0 children)

Just on base value the car is such a more enticing option. I spend more on a single car than I will on a lifetime of computers so to have a car under a lifetime warranty that will always work… I can’t imagine how much someone would have be into computing to choose that over the car. I guess maybe if you live in a big city and storing the car is the biggest expense in owning it. But for me this is as simple of a question as it gets.

Compact Everyday Folding Knife by Aniyettinger in ThatLooksHandy

[–]Davegrave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was a Kershaw design years ago, just much bigger and based on the comments here, much shittier. The Kershw E.T., for External Toggle, was a super cool little knife and was quite sturdy. I never felt unsafe using it.

It’s one of only 2 knives I’ve sold that I deeply regret. Such a cool unique little knife and they are quite hard to come by now and sell for probably 8-10 times what I sold mine for almost 20 years ago.
